Blitz on Bristol PRESS PHOTOGRAPHS Five black and white prints size 10" x 8", showing: the bombed University Great Hall, with huge pile of twisted tram rails; Dutch House in High St., close up of balcony with figure of 'Crimean Veteran Still Standing Guard'; the Dutch House with side of building crumbling; 'Oldest church in city' in ruins after rain; a bombed 'suburban church in Bristol' not identified, shows altar end of church with wall above in distinctive patterned brickwork.... together with.... half plate photos of bombed 'house in suburbs', with men working to clear rubble, and 'business as usual in Blitzed City of Bristol' with Duke of Kent being presented with string of sausages by a girl; full plate photo of inside of huge workshop with hundreds of men 'being trained for war services' (possibly B.A.C?), and two other uncaptioned photos of workmen training and the militia at target practice. Free French in Bristol TWO ORIGINAL PRESS PHOTOGRAPHS size 6" x 8", one showing 'Members of Bristol French Colony lining up to kiss the Standard at the Presentation by General Petit at Bristol', and the other 'General Petit Saluting the Standard after handing it to Lieut. Martin at the Grammar School Bristol, to take to The Free French Troops in England.' First photo has some light brownish marks. With press labels, and 'passed by Censor' on verso. c1940. £15.00

  27. Suspension Bridge PRESS CUTTINGS of Clifton Suspension Bridge Centenary, 1964. Folder, containing two actual photographs of Sir Humphrey Brunel Noble at the bridge before the Centenary Dinner; 12 pages of press cuttings; typescripts of 'Today' programme feature, 'Tonight' BBC TV feature, etc. Vinyl folder with gilt lettered title. 1964. £25.00

  28. Wine Merchant's LETTER BOOK of James Evens, of the firm Evens & Sons, Bridge Street, 1880 - 1920, and E.D. Evens, 1928. 280 pages of copies on flimsy paper, mainly handwritten, a few typed, plus many pages of blanks. The letters mainly concern the division of capital between the family, and ensuing arguments: James Evens writes of his older brother "his advice was to decline the offer and go out to Cognac and lay everything before Mr Martell". Some letters refer to accounts of "The Valley Water Mills Colour Co." 4to, rubbed boards and worn morocco spine, a few sheets cut out, some copies rather feint. Indelible ownership stamp inside front board, a few ballpoint notes re. the company on first page. 1880-1928. £50.00

Manuscript map in ink and 4 colours, on Whatman paper backed with linen, size 25" x 32". With coloured border marked off in degrees. Attractive title with calligraphic flourishes. A few minor creases in paper, some dust-spotting lower left corner near title, colour slightly faded. Light dust-marking at edges, one or two small edge tears. n.d. late 18th century. £90.00

  47. British Railways (Western Region) POSTER by 'Bowyer', titled 'Cornwall', size 39" x 50". Depicts a map of Cornwall in bold bright colours, railway lines in red, large decorative title, compass rose bottom left with 'British Railways' across it in black, coats of arms of four main towns, numerous figures of local legend and history depicted in very lively fashion, vignettes with views of places such as St. Michael's Mount, notes on local places. Folds, one small feint brownish mark, about 1" across, near centre, two rust spots in margins. Printed by Jordison & Co. 1950's. £160.00
    Would frame well.


  48. Christopher Consols SECTION ON THE ENGINE LODE Plan, in ink, with a little shading, size 30" x 45", linen backed, showing the engine house and adjacent buildings in elevation, with the engine shaft and other shafts. Some light shading, some rough figures in pencil, cross-course marked. No scale bar or other reference. Rusty stab holes along top edge where one attached to roller, edges rather ragged, dusty overall. c1840. £80.00

  53. Helston Cordwainers LETTER from J.P. Rogers, Recorder, to Rev. Cannon Jennings, Madron, about a charter of the shoemakers of Helston, recently discovered, asking if he would give it to the borough. Typewritten, with handwritten reply from Jennings, enclosing his paper on the subject, with answer from Rogers. Attached is 11p. oblong 8vo typescript of Jenning's article, which includes a transcript of the 1459 charter. 1935. £10.00

  54. Helston THE CHURCHWARDENS AND OVERSEERS OF THE BOROUGH in acc. with G. Grylls & Co., Helston, on purchase of corn. 2p., sm. 4to, listing money due for 'samples of Barley', 'Capn. Clarks bill for freight', etc. Together with receipt of 1874 for corn ricks purchased by R. Mathews. 1801 and 1874. £12.00

  55. Hocking (J), Linen & Woollen Draper, Helston BILL to the Provident Club, Nov. 8th, 186?, printed heading, lists 13 girls' names, each with sum of 11s 3d, with similar bill to Revd. E. Wills for the Helston Provident Club, attractive printed heading of James Woolcock, Linen Draper etc., Helston, 186-, again listing girls' names.... together with.... bill of A.H. Michell & Sons, Drapers, Penzance, to R. Mathews, Xmas, 1895, for ribbon, roses, cloak, etc. 3 items. 1860-95. £8.00

  56. Jones (Henry) REASONS HUMBLY OFFERED For Building a Mould or Harbour in Whitsand Bay, at the Lands-End, in Cornwall. Single folio sheet, closely printed, size approx. 17" x 12", laid down on card, with a window in the card on verso to reveal an engraved plan on verso of sheet by Frederick de Hauttecourt, 1702. Size of plan approx. 6" x 10", scale 1" to 1 mile, compass rose, soundings, relief crudely indicated, small elevations of 3 churches, 12-line key of letters, showing the Long Ships, the Brisons, etc. Margin trimmed unevenly on left side, some light creasing, area of light staining at right, approx. 5" x 3", not affecting plan. n.d.(1702). £480.00
    RARE. Gives a description of the area 'call'd in Cornish Pullan da', and 12 arguments for building the proposed mold, for want of which 'there hath been, and may be more Ships los (yearly, besides the mens lives) than three times the Value of what would Erect the same. Hence the Leverpoole Marchants have possessed those who trade from London that their Ships might come safer North about Ireland.... rather than run the Hazard of having their Ships taken by the Enemy, or wreckt, by reason of the great Dangers of Scill, the Lands-End, Mount's-Bay,, Lizzard. He mentions 'Sir Cloudesly Shovel's Misfortune at Scill and the loss of the Colchester Man or War in Whitsand-Bay' and the effect on compasses of the 'many Tynn, Copper, Iron and other Mineral-Loads'. de Hauttecourt was one of the Engineers who surveyed the coast with 'Mr. Tuttel, his late Majesty's Hydrographer'.

Finely drawn manuscript plan in ink and 4 colours, on thick paper, 25" x 25", backed with linen. Scale 2 chains = 1 inch. With title, scale bar, compass rose, and Table of Reference listing 30 features, with State, Quantity. Shows Mansion House, with Pleasure Grounds, Orchards, Walled Garden, Farm, stream, well, etc., different types of trees shown, adjoining owners named. Some minor creasing of paper at top edge, top and bottom slightly dusty. 1841. £180.00
    A very attractive estate plan.

Foolscap sheet, with list of kersey, 'Rodney's velvett Cord', 'light Beaver' etc., with quantities, amount paid. The writer says he has 'sent them by James for you in 3 trusses. I doubt not but you will say with me that there is a good deal of money to be got by them...' Edges ragged. The verso has later been used for a letter to Westron's sister at Ottery St. Mary. The letting of the Turnpike Tolls had been offered at Auction in Barnstaple the previous month.     The Gloucester Journal was one of the earliest provincial newspapers. Austin lists only 6 copies between 1722 and 1727 and all but one are imperfect. The woodcut view appeared at the head of the paper between April 1724 and April 1725 only (See Hyett & Bazeley 'Manual of Gloucestershire Literature' Vol I p. 323.)

  218. London and Newcastle FIVE LETTERS From George Gilroy at Bow to his father John Gilroy of Newcastle (millwright), dated London, 29 March 1841 - 28 July, 1843. Each letter approx. two pages, in a neat hand, with integral address panel on conjoint leaf, with postmarks and wax seals. 1841-3. £90.00
    He complains of the difficult conditions 'trade is very slack here now & has been out for 3,4 & 6 months..... I drew my money out of the Savings Bank thinking these rumours of wars would depress the funds.... would you advise me to speculate in a railway share for I have got about œ85 and I should like to make it work as well as me....' Later letters mention his buying a Great North of England Railway share for œ13.00, enquiring whether the 'Edinburgh Railway is to come by the East coast or West....'. In August 1841 he joins a drawing school '2 guineas a quarter', but in May 1842 is still out of work 'I have had only 5 days work in the last 15 weeks and no prospect of anything doing....' Later he considers going to India as an engineer in the East India Co., quoting the rates of pay, etc.... 'I find the Sierra Lione man has 3 guineas per week... so you see father I have asked less than the 3d class engineers.... my friend advises me as trade is so dull to take a little less....'

Rum & Brandy Importers BILLS from Eagle & Back, Distillers, Importers of Rum & Brandy, Red Cross Street, Cripplegate, addressed to a Brewer in Gosberton, Lincs, 1825 - 31. 20 bills, 4to, each with engraved heading, with adjoining leaf with letter, integral address panel on verso, postmark, some small holes in paper where wax seal broken. The bills are mainly for puncheons of Jamaica Rum, Brandy, Gin and Port Wine, the letters deal with details of carriage ('forwarded per Hearn's Waggon' etc.), occasional turkeys received, oysters sent, remarks on duty etc. 'Having heard on Monday that as Parliament meet on Tuesday week, one of the first questions to be settled is the new duty on Wine I have lost no time in getting your Hogshead cleared....' 1825-31. £40.00

Rodden FORM OF AN APPOINTMENT OF AN OVERSEER FOR DRIVING SHEEP Printed sheet, with MS insertions, size 16" x 13", 35 printed lines, in a large typeface, signed by Earl Poulett as Lord Lieutenant of the County, with a good wax seal. The form was to be used to appoint 'An Overseer for Driving Sheep, of the Parish of Rodden (of which the Revd. Bell is Superintendant)....' In case of invasion he was to assemble the drivers at a given rendezvous and drive the sheep along appointed routes to depots. The name of the appointee has not been filled in, presumably the forms were prepared to be actually used only if the invasion threat materialised. 24th Nov. 1803. £25.00
    War with France had resumed in May 1803, and extensive anti-invasion preparations were made during that year, under an Act of Parliament, referred to in the text, 'to enable His Majesty more effectually to provide for the Defence and Security of the Realm during the present War....'
