At the curves of the road the rollers are only 12 ft asunder and there is a vertical roller to keep the rope on the curve, the pin being fixed in a block of wood, and the roller dropped loosely over it thus (small ink sketch of profile of rails)...'. There is also a description of the various engines near the colliery, with their positions, for taking up the waggons, and of the steam engines in the shafts 'Another pit similarly used is 150 fathoms deep, they draw 3 baskets each of 8cwt in one minute all hitched by separate pieces of chain, they have brakes on the fly-wheel and check the speed of the winding engine easily: men all come up by the ropes, they are flat ropes.... July 5th 1830.' There is a sketch of a Hatton waggon with detailed measurements etc., sketch of machinery for winding waggons with much technical detail. July 6th he visits Seaham harbour, where Mr Thormond, assistant engineer, shows him the works and plans.
