  76. Trehawke, John, Liskeard 'AN ACCOUNT OF MY LABOUR IN RECOVERING THE HIGH RENTS of this Burrough which for many years were absolutely lost: whereby.... every particular Maior lost 4l. per Ann: in as much as every Maior accounted for 4l. yearly high rents but recd. not a penny.' 49 lines in a small neat hand, signed by John Trehawke, on small folio sheet, blank adjoining leaf, docket title on verso, some brown spots in one area not affecting legibility. Trehawke explains in detail how he went about tracing the lost rents; how he came across 'many little notes' in Samuel Lobb's old papers 'which gave some light on some other rents, by him formerly collected'. He was later given Mr. Sampson's copy of 'The Old Black Bear' composed in the Reign of Queen Elizabeth, which he transcribed. In 1691 and '92 he viewed all the lands held of the Borough, 'antiently divided into 24 Lots', and made out a large Rent Roll, and then drew an Abstract 'to collect by'. He reckons he spent 'three score and eleven days' on all this work 'for which I well deserve Ten gineas'. He recommends whoever engrosses the high rents and escheat rents into 'the New Book, according to the Method of M. Bear, deserves a ginea'. n.d. c1694. £70.00
