The village of Sampford Peverell was supposedly haunted for several years in the first decade of the century by a particularly aggressive ghost. Some said that the Revd. Charles Colton, who offered a reward for an explanation of the phenomenon, was himself the author of the events. The real names of the people alluded to in the text have been added in pencil in the margin (Revd. Colton, Dr. Tucker, etc). This spoof account tells how the village of Sampford was much troubled by supernatural visitings; the local parson is unable to deal with them 'his prayers availed not, for the knocking increased, and the howlings became even louder....', but 'Billy Blunder' (according to the pencil key 'Searle the Goaler'), took on the spirits, but ends by being converted and repenting 'he vowed a vow, that he would swear not at all!!... Yea I am gone over; howsomdever, not unto Parson Poole, but to Johanna Southcote'. The account contains veiled references to Catholicism.
