    Contains advert for tender for recasting Tenor Bell of Yatton Church, Auction of remaining unfinished houses in the Crescent, Clifton, for Letting of Liberty of Coal Mining at Cowhorn Works, Oldland.


  2. Bristol, Stapleton, Abbots Leigh ORDNANCE SURVEY MAPS Three maps, scale 6" to 1 mile, Sheets LXXII.S.W/part of VI; LXXI.S.E/part of III & VI; Sheet LXXV.N.E/part of VI. On stiff paper, 2 sheets with some colour shading of boundaries etc., some stencilled numbers in bottom left margin. First edition without contours. 1887. £25.00
    Covers area from Floating Harbour to Ashley Down, Fishponds, Central area, Sneed Park, Queen Square, Long Ashton.


  3. Clifton MINUTES OF THE CLIFTON HOCKEY CLUB from its founding, August 2nd, 1911 to the winding up of the Club, 18th July, 1930. 4to notebook, titled 'Minute Book' on front board, half morocco, corners rubbed, lacks spine. 110 pages of minutes. Loosely inserted is a specially printed postcard of the club (Ground Flax Bourton Cricket Ground) for advising members selected to play in Saturday matches. 1911-30. £42.00
    Some of the members apparently came from the defunct 'Old Redland Hillian Hockey Club.' There is a gap of five years over the period of the War.


  4. Dolphin Society PRESIDENTS' NAMES numbers of Persons who dined, amount of Collection.... from its first institution in 1749.... to 1909. Folio sheet, printed in blue with decorative border, folds, a few small tears, some browning at edges. 1910. £8.00

  5. Manor of Blacksworth PARISH OF ST PHILLIP AND ST JACOB Correspondence regarding a dispute over the Manor, comprising l5 letters, April - May l820. There are also 2 copies of bills of costs for legal work in the case `Dyer against Sutton & Wife and Long', and receipts, 1793, for payment of rents on the manor. 1793 and 1820. £24.00
    Mary Dyer inherited part of the estate from her father and refused to pay certain fines due to the Lord of the Manor Thomas Jones. He alleged one of the properties concerned, in West Street, Old Market was 'nearly in ruin'.

  21. Boconnoc LIBRARY Manuscript catalogue of the Library at Boconnoc, December 1807. 19 folio sheets, gilt edged, written on 1 side only, loosely folded together. Books are listed in 3 sections, A, B, with 6, 7 shelves respectively in each section, classified according to size. Each volume is numbered. This is no doubt only a portion of the catalogue.... With.... A duplicate copy of sections A & B, as above. There are many classical, historical and architectural works, and some topographical. A note in pencil dated 1834 states "Those marked X are missing".... With.... AN INVENTORY OF THE STUDY. 16 pages, sewn. Lists books according to size, giving total number of volumes in each format, with 3 closely-written pages listing pamphlets. Incomplete, last leaf or more missing. 1807. £70.00
    For a description of Boconnoc House at this period see C.S. Gilbert's Survey of Cornwall, vol 3, page 909. The house was owned by the Pitt family until the 2nd Lord Camelford died (after a duel in 1804). It then passed to the Grenville family. This inventory could have been made at this period.


  22. Boscadjack, Sithney LEASE for 3 lives, of a tenement in Sithney called Boscajack Wartha, formerly owned by John Tresillian, John Olliver to Francis Tonkyn, fuller. Size 17" x 23", engraved heading, small wax seal on tag. Vellum browned, a few wormholes affecting 4 or five letters and blank area. 1697. £20.00

  23. Cury CONVEYANCE of a certain Farm known as Higher Treloskan and Lower Treloskan in the Parish of Cury, Thomas Chirgwin and Frek. Whinney , Thos. Bolitho and Pascoe Grenfell Hill to Richard Kerby. Vellum, 23" x 27", wax seals. 1879. £14.00

  24. 'F.E.A' PICTORIAL LAUNCESTON Leaves cut from an Artist's Sketchbook, including Literary Jottings. By 'F.E.A'. Small 4to book with stiff boards, title on label, with cuttings of reproduced pencil drawings and handwritten text pasted in. 18pp. on last leaf is 'Facsimile Pen & Ink Sketches & Jottings.   25. Falmouth LETTER from Joseph Trewartha, Swanpool, Falmouth, to John Chapman at the Columbian Mining Office, London, concerning discrepancies between export figures (from South America) given in his monthly reports and the actual quantities of tin exported. He concludes "a considerable quantity of the precious ores are lost by the process of wet stamping and dressing". Mentions Sta. Ana and La Manta mines. 2 pages 4to, adjoining leaf with address panel and Falmouth postmark. 18th Jan. 1831. £18.00

  27. Harrison (William), Composer THE FIRST SET OF CORNISH QUADRILLES Dedicated by Permission to Sir Richard R. Vyvyan, Bart., M.P. Composed by William Harrison, late Master in the Band of the Cornish Yeomanry Cavalry. 5 pages of engraved music plus decorative engraved title page with Cornish Arms, signed by Harrison at foot. Published by J.P. Vibert, Penzance, to be had of the Author, Penryn & at the principal Music Sellers & Stationers in the County. n.d. Paper watermarked 1825. £40.00
    The pieces are 'Trelowarren', 'Tehidy', 'Tregothnan', 'Carclew', 'Falmouth'.
    There is no mention of either Harrison, or this item in either Boase and Courtney's Bibliotheca Cornubiensis, or in Boase's Collectanea Cornubiensis.

Wax seal on tag, very attractive ornate signature of Ezekiel Grosse. 2 endorsements in Latin on verso. Signed by 7 witnesses on verso. Fine condition. 10th March 1637. £32.00

  36. Penzance MORTGAGE of the ketch 'Acadian', built in Prince Edward Island in 1860, registered in Penzance, Robert Michell, Merchant to Michael Harry of Penzance, Master Mariner. Printed form size 15" x 20", with MS inserts, details of tonnage, rigging etc. Sm. wax seal. 1885. £14.00

  38. Sithney LEASE of Boscassack, John Gervies of Constantine to Thomas Gerveis. Vellum, 13" x 8", signed by Thomas Gerveis, witnessed on verso. It appears small piece has been clipped from bottom corner next to signature, possibly a small seal. Some minor discoloration of vellum. 1613. £28.00

  39. Sithney LEASE of messuages lands and tenements called Boscassack and Downgow(?) in Sithney, Thomas Gerveis of Constantine and Christian wife of John Gundry. Vellum, 10" x 19", seal tags but no trace of seal, some foxing down central fold. 1578. £34.00

  40. Sithney LEASE of Boscassack and Downgowe(?), William Paynter of Sithney to Thomas Gill, Yeoman. Vellum 11" x 16", some minor foxing at folds, heavy wax seal on tag 1" diameter, impressed with small coat of arms. 1657. £25.00

  41. St. Austell LETTER from Henry Geach, dated St. Austle 30 Dec. 1820, 1p 4to, adjoining leaf with integral address panel with address of Messrs. Allan Marshall, in London, with straightline Lostwithiel postmark, traces of wax seal. Explains he has shipped 17 pigs of lead on board the 'Fowey' Capt. Bone, for part payment. 'the Vessel is now a Loading of stone at Penreen' (Penryn?). 22 lines, very eccentric spelling. 1820. £25.00

  57. Bolsover MINE PLAN Elevation & Section of Jocast Bank, Moresby Colliery. Scale: quarter of an inch = 1 foot. Detailed manuscript plan filling the whole of the sheet, in ink and five colours, on cotton, size 27" x 40". One 3" split in fabric, some minor rubbing and creasing. 27th Sept. 1928. £30.00

Illustrated with Historical Extracts relative to its Natural Curiosities, Mines, Minerals, Trade and Manufactories.... Engraved map, coloured in outline, size 27" x 21", dissected and mounted on linen, edged with tape, inserted in marbled slipcase, paper rubbed, with Faden label, and Derbys added in pencil. Decorative cartouche showing millrace and millstones, descriptions of Pool's Hole, Eldon Hole, Devil's Arse etc. around edge of map. Two small light brown splashes at right margin, feint glue(?) splash about 2" long. c1790. £135.00

  60. Military Parade NEW FORM OF BRIGADE On Tuesday the 4th June, 1805. Staffordshire - on the Right, Derby - on the Left, Belper, Ashborne, Horsley - Right Centre.... Printed card size 4" x 3", printed in small type on both sides with detailed instructions for a complicated parade 'Deploy into Line on the Right Divisions, and fire two Rounds by Divisions From Right to Left by Companies....' etc. The last part is titled 'The Light Infantry Skirmish'. 1804. £22.00

Delineated From An Actual Survey By Benjamin Donn, on Twelve Sheets of Imperial Paper, the Scale and Inch to a Mile. By Benjamin Donn, Teacher of the Mathematics, &c, late of Bideford, now of the City of Bristol. Engraved By Thomas Jefferys, Geographer to His Majesty. To Which is Prefixed A General View of the County, on One Sheet, with Indexes of the Parishes, Seats, &c, for the readier finding them on the Large Map. Title page, gazeteer and list of subscribers (9pp.), double page smale-scale index map, 12 double-page map sheets, contemporary outline colour, with 4 large detailed inset plans, of the city and suburbs of Exeter; the Island of Lundy; Stoke Town and Plymouth Dock; and the town and citadel of Plymouth, which have been left uncoloured. Folio, recently finely re-bound in qtr. calf, cloth boards, gilt title on spine, inserted in paper-covered slip-case with ties, large printed label to front. New endpapers, map sheets re-hinged, and de-acified (Details loosely enclosed). Occasional light off-setting of outline of hundred boundaries, on some sheets the yellow outline colour has browned slightly at the edges. Light off-setting of engraved cartouche.     The map is rarely found in this state, complete with Index map and text.
    It shows 656 gentleman's seats, represented by elevations of the building, as well as mines, salt works, quarries, lime kilns. Donn also developed a new way of showing roads according to their quality and whether they were fenced or not.
    "In 1759 The Royal Society of Arts.... offered an annual award of œ100 for the best original 1 inch to 1 mile county survey. .....Donn was the first successful applicant.... Donn is the first to identify the island in Bigbury Bay by the names Bur Island or Borough Island", see Batten and Bennett's 'Printed Maps of Devon'.

Shows river, buildings, roads, wooded areas, paths, gardens, name of each field with acreage, adjoining owners (e.g. Marshfield Glebe, Isaac Rench) named. Covers area from river Frome in south, Damersons Bridge in North West, with buldings and fields along Cuckow Lane, large filed called Stoney Close, Two Leazes, Bullmoor in North, and buildings along road bordering 'Stoney Close'. Indicates Bury Hill, encampment etc. The map appears to have been slightly trimmed along right hand edge. Name of Y & J.P. Sturge bottom left. One area of wear where two folds meet, with minor loss of paper, one other small hole at fold. Dover ARTISTS SKETCHBOOK Size 5" x 7", quarter calf, cloth boards, rubbed, containing 24 detailed pencil sketches of Dover and 9 of Calais, each titled and dated, with dates throughout September 1840. The views mostly cover the whole page, usually with a border, many show figures, and scenes in the harbour with carts for loading, cranes, jetties etc. Titles include 'Dover Harbour September 2nd.' (quay with cart, crane, sails); 'Dover from the South Pier (wooden buildings on the beach, with washing on lines and laid on the shore to dray); 'Dovor Harbour Pier From South Sept 3 1840' (lively very detailed scene with clock tower, hills in distance, ladders and mooring chains in foreground). Calais views include 'Calais Pier Sept. 3 1840'; 'Shrimpers on the Sands off Calais September 3 1840'; 'View of Calais from Maurice Hotel September 4th 1840'. One view of Calais has some brown rust marks. Name 'George Cowell'(?) on fly-leaf. September 1840. £220.00

  196. Gunpowder, Navy Well etc. MANUSCRIPT 4to notebook, marbled boards, later cloth spine, with bookplate of Alexander Spears, 3 St. Andrews Terrace, Sheerness. Comprises 5 pages of drawings of parts of engines, one coloured; 3p titled 'Navy Well Sheerness' with details of pump, engine etc. 'Well 300 ft. deep... Length of working barrel 3'6".... Length of Sucktion Pipe from the seat of the bottom valve 28ft.... etc'; 26 pages 'Manufacture of Gunpowder', under headings, including Burning the Charcoal, Refineing the Saltpetre, Incorperating Mill, Corning House or Granulateing machine, The Dusting House Reels at Waltham Abbey... for the fine grain and long grain. The description consists of technical details of the machinery and seems to refer to a particular Gunpowder Works, with many detailed measurements, e.g. 'water wheel 14ft Diameter 6 ft. 6 inches wide 6 feet of fall of the water. Pit wheel 66 Cogs .... Crown wheel 53 cogs', '....Runners 6ft. 3 inches Dia. 16in. wide.... charge is worked 3 hours for best powder'. From the spelling mistakes and the way it is written it would appear to be an original description, possibly relating to the Royal Gunpowder works not far from Sheerness at Waltham Abbey. Also contains 42p 'Extracts from the History of Kent'and 20p taken from a work on fossils. c1860. £80.00

  268. Roberts (George) LETTER to George Roberts from an acquaintance signing himself 'W. Sharling'(?), dated Roseville, Feby. 12th, 1842, 4p, 4to. Thanks Roberts for the gift of 'the gigantic potatoes', says he is delighted to be able to help with his proposed work on Monmouth. Offers to send him a much better plan, on a larger scale, and some skethes, and gives him detailed information on one of the weapons used by the rebels 'the Rhine scythe.... I suppose when at Weston we could have seen one of them in almost every cottage and Farm house and also another weapon called the staff-hook which is an old reap-hook fixed on a long pole for the purpose of cutting the bottom weeds from the ditches.... of course they were taken as the first formidable weapons at hand....' He claims his own information is more reliable than Lock's (author of 'The Western Rebellion') '.... in one instance my information was from a Tailor who died last year at the age of 96 whose Master (Tailor Arthur) was a Boy keeping sheep on the moor at the time the Battle was fought - Wade knew not the situation of the Rhines &c which were by no means deep at that time of the year....'
