  1. Barton Regis, Manor of ARTICLES OF AGREEMENT between John Lawford of Stapleton Esq. and John Harrison of Bristol, for the purchase of 3 acres of meadow at Little Marsh. On paper, 16" x 12", signed with 2 wax seals. A few small tears along folds, not affecting text.... With.... BOND of John Lawford relating to above transaction. Bristol Water Works STATEMENT made by the Directors on an Application for a Loan authorised to be raised by the Act of Incorporation. 7p. folio, in a neat hand, tied at corner, signed by Chairman, Secretary, Deputy Chairman.... together with.... five letters to the Secretary, Mr. Bragge, dated Dec. 1847 and Jan. 1848, from Imperial Life and other insurance companies, each declining the request for a loan on the Security of the Bristol Water Works. Each letter 4to, with integral address panel or envelope. Nov. 1st 1847. £40.00

  28. Anon. A PLAN OF THE TOWN LANDS WITHIN THE BOROUGH OF HELLESTON in the County of Cornwall. 1838. Finely drawn manuscript plan in ink and colour on thick paper, size 47" x 39", scale 2 chains = 1". Section of paper approx. 15" x 4" missing from right hand top edge, wider along top margin, with loss of a very small amount of drawing consisting mainly of the road at the Northern end of Watch lane above the toll booth at the junction with the Falmouth road. Top left hand corner torn away, plus a small piece at top edge left. Large compass rose, scale bar. Covers Helleston Mills and Burial Ground in the North, Nansloe Gate and Clodgy Lane to the South, Watch Lane to the East and River Cober and new Leat to the West. Shows individual buildings shaded in pink, public buildings such as prison in darker colour, individual garden plots, layout of parks etc., toll booths, turnpikes, bridges, quarries, carefully drawn trees with shadows, 'boundary stone buried under road' etc., hachures in grey wash indicating high ground. Each building and field numbered (no key present). Fine red lines with numbers running in different directions across map. Paper dusty and ragged in places down side edges, verso very dusty, a long tear approx. 18" long running from top edge through title and through map surface down to Wendron Street, neatly repaired with document tape, another long repaired tear in blank area. 1838. £165.00

The 7 coloured folding plans referred to are not bound in but mounted together on a large rough sheet of brown paper, so as to form a sort of composite map. The plans appear to be a preliminary edition and are quite crudely printed, paper rubbed at folds, plan posted to Solicitors at St. Austell on train from Paddington, with GWR labels on verso. 1946. £55.00

Pendarves as one of its Rerpresentatives.... Printed report of five resolutions passed at the meeting relative to the election of pendarves, setting up of a Fund, bankers, subscriptions etc. 1p., sm. folio, with printed letter on adjoining leaf, asking recipient to attend a meeting at Truro, signed by Wm.   44. Launceston Railway SUBSCRIPTIONS Manuscript on one page, sm. folio, listing 25 'Town Subscriptions' with name and amount contributed, in a fine hand.... together with.... LETTER from John Curland to Mary Pearse, encouraging her support for the railway, saying he is enclosing a 'list of subscriptions for shares the result of the last few days applications.... it indicates a very general wish for the rail....' 2p., sm. 8vo. Lists names of 42 signatories in three columns, and under that 'His Majesties Answer to the Petition of Cornwall, At the Court at York. 26. June 1642.' Decorative initial letters and floral lines.   58. St. Minver PROSPECTUS OF WHEAL ENGLAND AND TREDOWER Silver, Lead and Copper Mines, Situate in the Parish of St. Minver, Cornwall. Single sheet, 4to, printed on one side only, mounted at corners to brownish paper, name of the Bank where plans to be inspected 'Gerrards Hall, Basing Lane, London', entered in MS in final paragraph. Small piece torn from bottom right corner, affecting margin only. November 1819. £50.00
    'The veins already discovered, are two of Silver Lead, and three of Copper Ore, one of the former is about eight feet thick, with fine stones of Silver Lead and tender Quartz.... on which the labourers have driven an Adit from the sea level above 30 fathoms in length....'

  93. Nation (William) JOURNAL OF EVENTS IN EXETER from January 1797 to May 1831. 164 pages in a neat hand, in a 4to notebook, full reversed calf. Includes a few references to his family (children having measles etc.), but mostly deals with affairs of local government, crime, trials and executions, entertainment ('Oct. 22nd 1814 Mr Sadler ascended with a maginificent ballon of 75ft diameter from the Castle Yard....'), deaths of local notables. Describes political demonstrations (for example when a crowd assembled in Southernhay and 'went into the country to the opulent farmers' compelling them to sign undertakings to bring wheat and barley to the next market at lower prices 'Mr Frood of Exminster hesitated but at last complied'), unusual weather. e.g. on 22nd Jan. 1807 'about 4 o'clock a great part of the front of the theatre was blown down, which in its fall, wholly destroyed & buried the colonnade in ruins - a stack of chimneys at the Royal Oak in Guinea Street fell & carried everything before it to the ground floor, where a musician belonging to the Montgomery militia was killed before he had time to escape to the bar....'. The account is closed by his son 'Here closes the account of William Nation Esq. His afflicted son now continues it...' He explains how his father had died in Dawlish, where he had retired through illness 'under a strong impression he should never see Exeter again'. 1797-1831. £250.00
    The writer was possibly the William Nation who wrote 'The Dramatic Pieces and Poetry of William Nation....' Published in Plymouth in 1789.
