  8. Blacksworth, Manor of COPY OF COURT ROLL recording the admission to a messuage and garden in the Manor of Nathaniel Ogbourne, Whipmaker, of Barton Regis. Vellum, 10" x 14", signed by Abraham Elton, farmer of the Manor, with wax seal showing a swan or similar bird. 15th Sept. 1738. £18.00

  9. Bristol Water Works SUPPLY OF WATER FOR TRADE PREMISES. Small 4to record book, full calf, lacks sections of spine, calf rubbed, titled in gilt 'B.W.W. Quarterly Meter Book. Thursday'. 51 double pages, some rather grubby, ruled in columns with meter no. and quarters for 1872,3,4, with numbers presumably relating to comsumption. Lists premises such as pubs, schools, shops, chapels, hotels etc., in Kingsdown, Cotham, Redland, Sneyd Park, Clifton, Leigh Woods, Westbury. 1872-4. £38.00

  11. Champion's PLAN OF THE BRISTOL CHANNEL FROM THE KEY TO THE HOTWELLS and of the intended Scheme of a new Cut.... January 1767. Copper engraved, size 16" x 21", plan with 15 lines of text, showing Queen Square, Cannons Marsh, College Green, 'Front View of the Dam, Ware, Bridge.... etc.' This is the lower half only, lacking the plan of the channel, of a sheet measuring originally 16" x 21". Jennings (Bristol) Ltd., General Woodworkers CATALOGUE of doors, bay windows, shop fronts, pulpits, tracery panels, bargeboards, shutters, portable buildings, etc. 264pp., 8vo, printed boards, illustrated throughout, with prices. The catalogue is a re-issue of the 1914 one and inside the front cover and on the first pages are warnings 'All prices in this List advanced. Prices in January 1926 average about double those shown.' Loosely inserted is a 16pp. illustrated list for April 1928. 1926 and 1928. £30.00

  18. Lander (S.J), Sc. ROYAL PROMENADE, VICTORIA SQUARE, CLIFTON W.B. Reed, Builder and Proprietor, Marmont & Lloyd, Architects. Steel engraved vignette view, looking across the gardens with fountain etc. Engraved surface size 4" x 6", plus margins, mounted on sheet of paper, a few grubby marks. Published by J. Burbidge, Regent Place, Clifton. c1850. £14.00

  19. Newman (J) & Co. THE ILLUSTRATED FAN Fan in stiff glazed card, 8" long, comprising 11 sticks in all, 9 of which have oval vignette views of Bristol, titled, the two outer sticks being decorated with very ornate design of a maiden holding up a roundel with swags of roses, surrounded with trails of vine etc., similar design on each stick, except that she is holding up oval with view. Hinged on small metal stud at base, pink silk ribbon which is threaded through has perished between the sticks. c1850. £140.00
    A rare item. Views comprise:- Bristol from Brandon Hill; St. Paul's Church; Bank & Council House; St. Matthews Church; Broad Street; Drawbridge; Royal Hotel; College Green; Infirmary.


  20. Plea of Trespass on the Case JOHN OVENS, TANNER against James Davis and Robert Hassall, both in the Custody of the Marshalsea. Vellum document setting out the case in great detail, browning at central fold and down part of one side, tear with loss of one word, size 32" x 27", printed list of 48 Bristol Jurors attached, with their occupations, together with 2 small printed documents, MS inserts, bright orange embossed paper stamps, issued from Westminster, commanding the Sheriff of Bristol to send 12 Jurors to London. 1797. £45.00
    Occupations of Jurors include Brasier, Flax-Dresser, Silversmith, Potter, Wine-Hooper. It appears that Ovens was a prosperous businessman who employed Davis and Hassal, but they issued unlawful bills of exchange in his name.

  22. Sanderson family PROBATE of the will of Benjamin Sanderson, of Bristol, Dealer in Tortoiseshell. Vellum, 15" x 24", small printed certificate attached, good large papered seal on tag. 1830. £18.00
    Leaves books, plate, glass etc., to his wife, stock in trade to his friends, bequest to Blue Coat Boys Charity School, Sheffield.


  23. Ship repair Company INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CLERKS ON METHODS OF WORK Comprising 5 sm. folio and two 4to sheets of paper, in MS, with details of daily duties for 5 named employees. Mr James Taylor, for example, in October 1838, is to 'Examine Blockmaker's books, make up Wages.' every Monday. Together with single folio sheet setting out 'C.H's mode of working 'Enter the Counting House precisely at 9 o'clock.... at 10 C.H. will go to the Ships under Repair and return.... as soon as he has given orders what to do.' Mainly written in a small, fine hand, some deletions. 1 sheet torn, not affecting writing. One sheet dated 1838, others watermarked early 1830's. £32.00
    Sawyers and shipwrights work, 'Rigging Loft Book', referred to, as well as 'invoices of sugar sales'.


  24. Skelton (J), Sculpt. VIEW OF THE BIRTHPLACE OF THOMAS LAWRENCE Born 12th April, 1769, Died 7th January, 1830. Engraving, size 6" x 9", showing the terrace of houses in Red Cross Street, passers-by looking at house. Margins trimmed, some feint browning on title. c1850. £16.00

  26. Sturge & Co. TOBACCO WAREHOUSE Surveyor's report signed by Y. & J.P. Sturge (on the instructions of the Surveyor of City Lands) on the suitability of a Tobacco Warehouse in Back Street for conversion to a `Mart for the sale of Leather'. One and a quarter sides of foolscap, in a clear hand. Oct. 25th l830. £17.00

  27. 'W.W.' CATHEDRAL CHURCH Engraving, tall vignette style, size 7" x 5", plus margins, showing the Cathedral with medieval houses adjoining, volunteers drilling nearby, crocodile of what appears to be Red Maids girls in front of Cathedral. c1840. £15.00

  31. Buckingham PARTICULARS AND CONDITIONS OF SALE of a Freehold Estate in the Boro' Town of Buckingham, consisting of The Parsonage Closes, and Sherives Meadow.... A Marble Quarry of Excellent and Fine Blue Marble, Which has been Worked, specimens of which may be seen in Buckingham, and at Mr. Robins' the Auctioneers, Plenty of Lime Stone, and a Lime Kiln: an Inexhaustible Pit of Good Clay for Brick-Making.... which will be Sold By Auction.... 9th July, 1822.... 3pp, plus docket title. With loosely inserted page of manuscript notes about the farming and quarrying 'the average sizes of the pieces of Marble of which the quarry produces abundantly are from 3 to 7 ft. long from 2 to 4 ft. wide and 9 inches to 2 ft thick and the quarry is not more than half a Mile from the Grand Junction Canal.'   40. Bodmin ASSIGNMENT of term of 1000 years in the Tithes of Bodmin in trust for George Collins, Revd. Nicholas Kendall and Revd. William Hocker to John Darke. Large vellum sheet, wax seal. Some yellowing of vellum. 1820. £12.00

  41. Boscajack LEASE of messuage at Boscajack, Thomas Gerveis of Bonallack to John Ethron, of Sithney, yeoman. Vellum, 8" x 14", in a small hand, tag which lacks seal. 1611. £30.00

  42. Breage and Sithney AGREEMENT OF PARTNERSHIP between James Clarke, Wine and Spirit Merchant, of Helston, and William Oats, Mine Agent, of Breage. Vellum, 24" x 31", two wax seals. 1848. £26.00
    James Clarke had carried on the business of 'purchasing dressing and selling Tin Ores', and had stamps at Maiden Stamps, Black Down Stamps, Old Mill Stamps, in Breage, Tuckingmill Stamps in Sithney and Trelubbis Stamps in Wendron, with Oats as his Agent. This agreement was to take him into partnership upon payment of one third of the value of these Stamps.


  43. Buryan LEASE of part of the tenement Penmenith or Penmenna in Buryan part of the Manor of Tregenebus, heretofor in the possession of Sarah James, John Buller of Shillingham to Thomas Tremewan. Vellum, 14" x 24", signed Buller with good armorial wax seal. 1738. £24.00

Calstock PARTICULARS AND CONDITIONS OF SALE of a Plantation Estate of Eleven Years Growth, with About 40,000 Trees Upon it, Which will be Sold by Auction by Mr George Robins, at the Auction Mart, London.... 28th July, 1836.... It is a portion of the Ancient Estate of the Duchy of Cornwall.... it is called The New Prospect Plantation.... only Two miles from The River Tamer.... principally Larch Timber.... now in high repute in His Majesty's Dock Yards.... A Court is held within the manor every 6 weeks.... Single sheet, folio, particulars printed on one side with very attractive varied type faces, Conditions of Sale, docket title, and manuscript memorandum on verso. Bids recorded in ink in margin, from 500 to 1000 guineas. 1836. £50.00

  48. Fox (Charles) A CORNISH DIALOGUE Gracey Penwear and Mally Trevisky. Manuscript copy which appears to be of Fox's poem, except that Gracey in named 'Penwear' instead of 'Penrose', followed by 'A Cornish Dialogue', being a conversation between 'Tom' and 'Dick'. 4 sides 4to, paper watermarked 1809. Traces of folds. c1810. £28.00

  49. Germoe LEASE of houses and gardens known as Gweal Malkyn and Ithert Down in Germoe, Francis Earl of Godolphin to Peter Kitchen, Carpenter. Vellum sheet, signed Godolphin with good armorial seal, vellum slightly browned. 1739. £28.00
    A 'best beast' was to be paid in heriot.


  50. Grade ASSIGNMENT by way of mortgge of a tenement called Mount Batt in Grade, Thomas Stephens to Richard Johns, including lands enclosed out of wastrel ground called Gwendreath Common, with Common of Pasture, Furze, Turf and Heath in Goonhilly Down. Large vellum sheet, wax seal. 1847. £15.00

  51. Grade CONVEYANCE of part of lands and house beside the road leading from Polstrangey to Kugar, and fields in Kugar called Voas an nell, with the liberty to take sand and seaweed from Poltesco Cove, J. Stephens to J. Jenkin. Large vellum sheet, wax seals. On verso is small genealogical 'diagram' referred to in text. 1876. £15.00

  52. Gwennap BELL MINE, MERCHANTS LEDGER NO. 1 Ledger, sm. folio, half reversed calf, titled as above on morocco lettering piece. 118 pages of entries, plus many blanks at end, alphabetical Index. The first 60 pages are double page spreads with Debit on left, Credit on Right, later pages have both on same page. Includes payments made for cartridges, candles, different types of timber, tools, rope, fuse, stationery, drawing materials, printing, long lists of equipment bought from Harvey & Co. ('Arm for flywheel... œ1.11s.8d', 'Tooth wheel for driving stamps... œ5.14s.6d'). Firms include John Martyn & Son, East Basset Adventurers, Cornwall Blasting Powder Co., Cornwall Gunpowder Co. The latter part of the ledger has pages headed with the names of a large number of mines, with entries for explosives supplied (territe, detonators). Mines include: West Godolphin, Mounts Bay Consols, Pheonix Mines, New Great Work, Breage TIn Mine, Dolcoath, East Tregembo, New Trumpet, Kit Hill Tunnel Mine. 1871 - 1887. £285.00

  58. Kenwyn OBLIGATION BOND of John Tippett of Kenwyn to Stephen Roberts of St. Agnes. 1p., in Latin and English, signed by Tippett with small wax seal, and two witnesses. Small repaired tear. 1731. £24.00

  59. Launceston CONVEYANCE of freehold hereditaments in Wooda Road, W.H. Congdon and others to the National Council of Young Men's Christian Associations. Vellum, 6p, folio, including coloured sketch map. Some browning along lower margin of first page and one line of text from old sellotape marks. 1918 £15.00

  60. Marazion PLAN & SECTION OF WHEAL VIRGIN in the Township of Marazion. Manuscript plan in ink and full colour, on cartridge paper, size 27" x 16". Border, compass rose, scale of fathoms, calligraphic title. Plan shows buildings, roads, fields, engine, Stamping Plat, Gundry's, Maid's and Beater's shafts, adits etc., adjoining owners named, some areas coloured in greyish wash to indicate rocky ground. The section shows the mine building above ground with engine, chimney etc. painted in detail, the network of shafts, with (presumably) deposits indicated by grey and brown colouring. Shafts named as above. New Ground, Old Ground, Tin Ground, and Boundary shown. n.d. c1840. £280.00
    An extremely attractive plan in excellent condition, which would frame well.


  61. Mining Journal ENGLISH AND FOREIGN MINING GLOSSARY to which is added The Smelting Terms used in France, Spain and Germany. 8pp., folio, 2 pages of Cornwall Mining Terms, one page of Derbyshire terms, and the rest French, etc. Bottom third of left hand margin trimmed. n.d. c1870. £22.00

  62. Penzance ASSIGNMENT of no. 17 Alma Terrace and premises in Penzance, T.H. Williams to S. Weymouth. Large vellum sheet, wax seals. 1880. £10.00

  63. Rogers family NOTEBOOK of Canon J. Rogers. 66 pages in morocco notebook, oblong 12mo, brass clasp, original pencil at side. Written in pencil, with dates between 1846 and 1854, a little faded in places. Many notes relate to a school, or schools, lists names of 'candidates for confirmation', 'free scholars', 'those scholars writing' etc., plus odd memoranda 'Dec. 13.'54 slate pencil wanted.'   122. Hinton Martel TITHE RECORD BOOKS of the Revd. Hugh Pugh. Notebook, marbled boards, calf spine, 8vo. 68 pages recording tithes received, 'from ye. Parsonage of Hinton Martel' from 1806-27. Lists names of tithe-payers and money paid (for example Sir Richard Carr Glyn Bart. paid œ21.6s in 1809) and tithes received in kind, for example 'two Hogshead of Cyder of tithe apples', Mr. Burt paid a milch cow, 6 weights of Horn Wool, œ15.10s., 22 lb of Southdown wool, œ6.1s.3d., and 34 Lambs, œ14.1s.6d'. Also records 'wheat in ground' with name, acreage and sheaves produced, how many bushels of threshed wheat produced from those sheaves, 'wood from Lord Shaftesbury's copse' etc. At the other end of the book are 18 pages detailing 'Money laid out on the Parsonage', yearly, from 1808-27. Lists taxes, repairs, bills for tradesmen 'repairing my bow window', etc. Also included is 1p. account of money spent on repair of Chancel (425 tiles, 1000 laths for the ceiling etc.) Loosely inserted is sheet recording money invested in consols.... together with.... smaller notebook, 12mo, marbled wraps, recording tithes received from 1797 - 1806, 20p. with lists of monies laid out on the Parsonage, 12p. (v) Series of letters from two firms selling malt, confirming despatch, etc, 'I beg to inform you that I have sold my horses which leave me unable to deliver any quantity of malt.... Fifth Edition 1838. 8vo, printed title and 7pp of instructions for use, followed by approx. 150 pages of entries in manuscript on blank paper covering all sorts of information making a kind of personalised encyclopaedia. Pages headed with letters alphabetically. Wide range of entries include, for example under 'G' statistics of 15 famous 'Giants'; 'Giants Causeway'; 'Gamboge'; 'Glass, constituents of'; 'Granite' 'Godwin, William'. 8vo, original marbled boards, recent calf spine, gilt, with label. 1838 and later. £56.00

  387. Tolls ACCOUNT BOOK presumably for receipt of money from Tolls, 1908-9. Mentions Menai, Bangor, Hythe, Ilfracombe, Bristol, Honiton and other places, together with Bristol Market, Bristol Tavern. 221p, in 8vo notebook, morocco boards. At the end are pasted two advertisements for men to take charge of toll gates in Hampshire and Pembroke, with the owners notes on the applicants for the jobs. Loosely inserted is a printed circular sent to Toll Lessees advertising a weekly publication which lists tolls to let. 1908-9. £45.00
