Single sheet folded in half vertically to 16" x 6", listing 57 ratepayers, with columns for Land values, Stock and Total. One lower corner missing affecting last 3 names, dust-marked but legible. Signed by the Assessor and Collector. 25th March - 24th June 1721. £36.00

  2. Ancient Order of Foresters DISPENSATION of the High Court to Brother Thomas Lurway and others to hold a regular Court at the Bear Hotel, Hotwells. Decorative lithographed certificate, size 25" x 18", ms. inserts, linen-backed. Attractive vignette of foresters with dog etc. 2" tear at bottom with yellow mark of old sellotape repair.... together with.... Certificate of Admission, 1877, colour printed, small tear. 1877 & 96. £18.00

Colour fontis. illustrating First World War dog fight, a brief history of the company and description of the Filton Works, and specification and full-page lightly tinted photographic illustrations of nine different planes, usually two photographs, front and side, per model.   16. Hot Well CERTIFICATE OF GUARANTEE Printed certificate testifying that 'this is the Real Bristol Hotwell Water, filled under my Inspection at the Original Spring', with description of the special corks and an illustration of the seal (the name 'S. Powell' in the centre). With MS receipt signed by Powell for one dozen bottles of Hotwell water, and one Hamper. Size 4" x 6", traces of folds, mounted on thick paper with some light browning due to glue. August 24th, 1808. £40.00

  32. Cornish Tin Mines OFFER OF THE EMPLOYERS' FEDERATION to the Workers on the Mines. Printed 4to sheet detailing the present wages, rise per week etc for 7 grades of men, with additional concessions. States that if these terms are not accepted "the responsibility must rest with the men of certain Mines closing down never to re-open again". Mar. 16th 1920.... With.... Employers Federation.     'the work is a magnificent example of the improved techniques and a scientific approach to the art of map-making. The Cornwall map is a reduced scale version of the 1 inch map of 1827.... in truth the map can stand on its cartographical merits alone.' Quixley's Antique Maps of Cornwall and the Scilly Isles.

  37. Kip (William) CORNWALL Olim Pars Danmoniorum. Hand-coloured, copper engraved map, size approx. 12" x 15", plus margins. Minor traces of two vertical folds. 1610. £185.00
    A decorative map, with possibly later colouring. With a large inset view of Launceston Castle. Ship, sea monster, compass rose, scale of miles with compasses.
    'Kip engraved the map of Cornwall, using as source material Saxton's map and the manuscript notes and drawings of Norden.... ' 'The most remarkable feature of Kip's map is the beautifully engraved view of Launceston, full of intricate detail and yet spendidly balanced.' Quixley's Antique Maps of Cornwall and the Scilly Isles, page 10. From Quixley's description this appears to be the third state of this map.

Printed on vellum with MS details, blue papered seal attached, signed by James Coleridge & John Wallis. 1829.... With.... Mawgan Church Town RESOLUTION of Mawgan Vestry that they will support and defray the costs of the prosecution commenced against John Hancock to be tried at the next Assizes, at the suit of Cuthbert Tremaine of the parish of Mawgan. Signed by 7 people, including Thos. Grylls for Sir Carew Vyvyan. Sm. folio sheet, folded, some browning. 1791. £15.00

  46. Watts (Mark), Phillack. LINES ON THE COMMENCEMENT AND PROGRESS OF MINING From the Earliest Ages to the present year 1870. Poem in twelve 4-line verses, giving a history of mining in Cornwall, from the time when Solomon used metals 'found upon the Cornish shore' to build his temple, to 'the engine worked by steam, And whims and stamps'.... Together with (on the same broadsheet).... ON THE PROSPERITY OF MELLANEAR MINE. Poem in twenty-six 4-line verses, describing the finding of a new lode at Mellanear. The poet hopes that other nearby mines, such as Wheal Lucy, Wheal Ann and Callebna, will soon be working like Wheal Crenver, where 'Four hundred men are taken in'. With 3 small wood-cuts above title, including a view of men working near an engine house. On thin paper, 15" x 10", portion torn away across top right-hand corner, not affecting any printing, neatly repaired, the whole broadside mounted on conservation-grade tissue.     The first poem lists 17 famous mines, with some inventive rhymes: 'Tincroft, Basset, and Roskear/Hundreds are still employed there/East Pool South Crofty, both Wheal Setons/Are daily fill'd with boys and maidens.'

  56. Bedford Iron Works SINGLE LEVER CRUSHER No. 1 Manufactured by Nicholls Williams and Co., Bedford Iron Works Tavistock. Scale 1: to One Foot. Engineer's drawing in ink and buff wash, on Whatman paper, size 20" x 27", marginal tears, tear in paper 5" long in blank area, due to damp, paper trimmed with scissors down left-hand edge leaving no margin so it is difficult to say whether part of drawing has been lost. Paper watermarked 185-. £30.00

  57. Belmont Hotel, Sidmouth POSTCARDS Three real photo postcards showing Belmont, Royal Glen, Woodlands Hotel, plus two of the Promenade. 1920 or earlier. £8.00

  58. Bideford, Okehampton, South Molton GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF GREAT BRITAIN. Sheet XXVI. Printed surface area approx. 24" x 35". Scale 1" to 1 mile. Hand-coloured with key. Copper-plate engraving with the plate mark in the margins, embossed stamp to top margin, some grubby marks on right hand side, few small tears to margins, 8" tear from left-hand margin, repaired to verso. Some old sellotape marks to top margin and verso. Pub. 1809 by Lt. Col. Mudge. Later c1850. £50.00
    On this map there is only a small amount of colour.

Duntze (John) TO THE INHABITANTS OF THE CITY OF EXETER Broadside, sm. folio, printed on one side only, in the form of a letter explaining his opposition to the Exeter Market Bill 'I did it from the most disinterested Motives.... I was, from my local Situation, more immediately concerned in the Removal of the Market, and more ardently wished for it, than perhaps any Individual in the whole City....' Traces of folds, browning stains. Exeter August 26, 1776. £30.00

  62. Hatherleigh CALENDAR for 1901, printed with the name of J. Strang, Family Grocer, Draper, Ironmonger. Size 28" x 19", wooden rollers, attractively printed to commemorate 'The Transvaal War 1899. The British Leaders' with photographic portraits of 9 leaders, the main one being Redvers Buller, but also showing Baden Powell in his characteristic hat. 1901. £26.00

  65. Milton Abbot VESTRY BOOK May 19th 1842 - February 9th 1865. 4to notebook, marbled wraps, calf spine, rubbed. 108 pages of entries. Recording business discussed at meetings, (often to do with problems of the poor e.g. '.... taking into consideration the order of removal of John Langman's Widow & her Children from the Parish Yeovil to this parish', 'a Letter Received from Mr. W. Rowe was read, in which he has suggested the propriety of increasing the Labourers wages one or two shillings a week during the continuance of the present dearth....'), resolutions passed, names of those nominated Overseers of the Poor, Constables, Surveyors of the Ways etc., salaries to be paid. The later records list those present. 1842-65. £110.00

  66. Nicholls Mathews & Co., Tavistock TRAM WAGGON Engineer's drawing in ink and blue wash, scale 1" to 1ft. On Whatman paper size 21" x 27", shows four drawings, Elevation, End, Plan, Underside. With manuscript notes in pencil and ink, including one noting 'this view sent to Capt. Philips March 18th 1884'., one signed JM Sept. 24th 1885.   94. Blandford Forum A DISTANT VIEW OF BLANDFORD TOWN pen and ink drawing, with some grey wash, of the whole town and surrounding fields and trees. Shows buildings in elevation, in great detail, including the church tower, a large house with a classical type frontage, with weathervane and decorative stonework at the corner. Two roads leading out of the village are labelled 'way to the Brid' and 'road to Brianston'. Size 9" x 12", waterstaining and light browning, two small holes, one with loss of the 'B' in the title, and another with loss of small area of a field. Ruled border to right and left, possibly slightly trimmed at bottom edge, as it seems the original word 'bridge' has been clipped off and added in a different ink. Edges reinforced with strips of paper. probably late 18th century. £120.00
    The viewpoint seems to be from a hill south of the town, looking across to the opposite hill, with the river behind the artist.

Bullock, to act on their behalf, felt the proposed canal would be 'highly injurious to the owners and propietorsof lands' through which it passed, and proposed that a subscription be raised to defray the expenses of opposing it, and the 'proceedings of the meeting.... be inserted in the Courrier & Morning Chronicle and also in the Gloucester Journal, Bath Chronicle....' This canal wuld have passed through the Gloucestershire Coalfield. The scheme was dropped in favour of the North Wilts. Canal.

'Mr Simpson wished to know if I intended having any pipes cast on the Hills, I beg to say that I shall have all the pipes cast at my Foundry here....' He offers to tender for further work (pipes with 'Branches Bends @ Ten pounds per Ton'), and apologises for late delivery 'I was obliged to have a Trow to convey the Pipes on account of the other Vessels drawing too much water for your Docks....'
