  3. "C.L." BRIGHTSTOWE IN ENGELLAND Copper engraved plan, size approx. 3" x 5", plus margins, hand-coloured, mounted along the top edge on stiff card. c1624. £80.00
    An attractive and unusual map, from Daniel Meisner's 'Sciagraphica Cosmica'. Shows a bird's-eye view of the city, with its castle, within the city walls, surrounded by orchards and fields. In the foreground on a hill are a huntsman with a gun and a monkey drinking from a flagon. Above the map is the Latin epigram 'Multi Ab Ebrietate Seducuntur' and below it a German verse, apparently also about drunkennes.

CHRIST CHURCH, CLIFTON Tinted lithograph, size 6" x 9", showing the church without the tower, looking from a point on the path opposite the junction of Christ Church Road, peole and children on the paths, shows nearby houses, view framed by trees.   7. St. Georges INVENTORY taken by her sister, of Plate, China, furniture etc., of Mary Jeaffreson, daughter of Col. Jefferson and Sarah the daughter of Adm. Perkins. Manuscript, sm. folio sheet written on one side only, in a fine neat hand, listing 'Jan. the 24th my sisters plate weighed wch. she left at St. Georges.' (includes a large Tankard and a Caster... 54oz.'). Also lists 'An Account of the Cheny', and furniture and furnishings in the various rooms 'In my brother Morgan's Chamber that was my sisters goods.... A Cloath bed lined wth. Bodmin Asylum LETTER To Mr. Hicks, Cornwall County Asylum, from the Deritend Bridge Works, Birmingham, 8vo headed paper, acknowledging receipt of a cheque, together with another similar acknowledging receipt of order, headed in a different hand 'New Locks', on the verso of which is an apology for not having finished the lock. April 26th, 1876. £10.00

Bossore, Kenwyn INDENTURE relating to the assignment of a share of a tenement in Bossore and a tenement in Blisland known as Pengelly's, Theophilus Langherne of Ladock to Richard Veale, Apothecary, of Truro.   17. Budock LETTER from Pender, Solicitors to Ralph Barnes in Exeter concerning his objections to owners of some tenements claiming exemptions from tithes. Refers to 'one of the largest landowners of the parish (A Quaker)' having intimated he will pay the tithes. 2p, 4to, integral address panel with penny red and Falmouth postmark. 1845. £7.00

  18. Collins (Grenville) LANDS END AND THE ISLES OF SCILLY Engraved chart, size 17" x 22", plus margins, central fold. Shows Land End and the Lizard, various points marked such as Longships, Market Jew, Robinson's Cove, decorative cartouche with dedication to The Governor of the East India Company, flanked by allegorical figures. Cherubs at bottom left hand corner holding compasses and scale bar. System of rhumb lines, the Scillies themselves appearing very small. St. Martins, St. Marys, St. Agnes, Tresco, Brhyer, marked, as well as Bishop Rock, Collins' Bank. Some feint discolouration of paper along approx. 2" of bottom edge, not affecting engraving. Marginal tear reaching " into map surface. 1693. £160.00
    A good strong impression.

Shows Proposed New Dock, Proposed New Harbour, Harbour Office etc. Size 27" x 32", plus margins, mounted on linen, rolled, some light foxing down left side, edges slightly ragged in a few places.   39. St Ives REPORT OF THE ADMIRALTY under the Act 14 & 15 Vict. c.49. St. Ives and West Cornwall Junciton Railway Bill. 1p, docket title on verso. 'their Lordships can only now assent to the Proposition on condition that the Railway Company's Viaduct, where it crosses the Estuary, be entirely on Timber Piles, with spans of not less than 20 Feet....' Paper rather brittle at edges, with portion chipped away at top. 1853 £10.00

Sale at the White Hart Hotel, Hayle, on Friday 15th August 1873. Size 24" x 17", several folds, few short tears to margins. 1873. £12.00

  43. St. Ives ETCHING size 7" x 5", plus margins, on thick paper. Shows a view looking down a steep street with steps on the right, across harbour to the church, houses going up the hill in the distance. Titled in pencil in bottom margin 'Fish Street Saint Ives', signed J. Lewis Start. inscribed 'To Margaret June 1953'. £18.00

  47. Trenarren LETTER from J. Hext dated Trenarren Aug. 6th 1824, to Revd. Tremayne at Heligan, thanking him for his present of a melon, and sending him a copy of a letter (on the adjoining leaf), from William Fere in Norfolk to Revd. H. Hasted, concerning the recent death of a mutual friend, Fursedon, who appears to have been a tutor. Address panel on verso, small wax seal. 1824. £18.00
    'Just as I had finished this letter your Servant arrived with yr kind inquiries and your very acceptable present of a melon....'


  48. Trewolsta, St. Germans INDENTURE titled on verso 'Mr. Wallis Possession for the Trewolsta Land', betweene William Morsehead of St. Ive, & Richard Morsehead, and John Wallis of Sheviock, Mary his wife and Roger Wallis. On paper, closely written, single folio sheet. Not signed. Repaired tear at one fold, with small hole affecting one word. 1675. £14.00
    Refers to lands at Blackdon, Ashwell, North Yard, etc. in Poundstock, with occupiers.


  49. (Watts, Mark) AN INTERESTING DIALOGUE between Mark and Uncle Tom, On the severity of the Times and the prosperity of the Mines. Broadside poem in four-line stanzas with prose introduction, printed on thin paper, in three columns, two woodcuts at head, each size approx. 4" x 3", one showing a village, the other figures near a cottage. Overall size 15" x 10", laid down on fine Japanese paper, slight chips in edge of paper along 1" on left side. Printed at the 'Hayle Weekly News' Office, c1870. £48.00
    The poem ends on an optimistic note 'May Mellanear, on Foundry-hill/With ores in plenty shine; May many hands be there employ'd/May it be a good mine. To Crenver mine I must refer/A cloak of gloom, she wore/Now her best garment is put on/And long may she endure.' The writer describes how when he became unemployed he travelled around the mines, to Dolcoath, Wheal Seaton, Roskear, etc. selling his publications. There is also a section on the port of Hayle and the vessels 'Bessie' and 'Henry Harvey'.

  51. Wendron DUTCHY LEASE of house and garden plot Part of Trussall in Wendron, Rev. John Rogers to Elizabeth Chilcott. Large vellum sheet, wax seal, small coloured sketch plan on verso. 1838. £16.00
    The garden plot was in the occupation of Thomas Barcla under-tenant to John Treloar. Mentions old dwelling house with Ladder room adjacent to Gable end for convenience of thatching.

  67. Barnstaple AN ACCOUNT OF THE TRUSTEES OF THE CHARITIES of the Parish of Barnstaple, From Lady-day, 1859, to Lady-day, 1860. Comprises Penrose's, Horwood's, Paige's Almshouses, various gifts to the poor. Printed sheet, 19" x 11", folded. 1860. £25.00

  68. Barnstaple CONVEYANCE of piece of land near the River Taw late part of the Strand, the Corporation of Barnstaple to John Law. Vellum, size 22" x 24", first paragraph printed with MS inserts, relating to Land Tax Redemption. Large wax seal of Corporation, showing a walking bird, slightly chipped, and two other seals. Signed by Mayor and two Aldermen, and also Lord Radstock and Nicholas Vansittart, Chancellor, Commissioners for the Redemption of the Land Tax. 1816. £25.00

  69. Barnstaple COUNTERPART LEASE of a Waste Piece of Ground part of the Strand, near the Square..... The Mayor, Aldermen and Burgesses to John Law. Berrynarbor, Combmartin etc. DRAFT BOND of Henry Cleve Buller of Tiverton and the Surveyors of Highways of Arlington, Kentisbury, Loxhore and other parishes, for the execution of the office of District Surveyor. Manuscript, 3p, folio, comprising draft bond and an accompanying letter on third page from John Barry to J.P. Chichester, M.P., asking him to make any amendments as 'it is a new Instrument' and discussing the new Act 'I have been looking over the Act and think it susceptible of one great improvement....' The artist says he has just completed Mr. Robinson's picture 'I will scribble the arrangement of it with my pen....(sketch below this).... it is quite an English rural scene one I found in a green nook in Surrey.... a mother with her eldest boy as pioneer, is going to market on her pony freighted with fowls & eggs....' There is a sketch of the picture in dark brown ink on the first page, size approx. 4" x 6", small portion torn from corner (and a few words missing from text on verso).
