  4. Ashmead (Geo. C) PLAN OF BRISTOL & ITS SUBURBS, Reduced from the Original Survey of the late J. Plumley With additions by Geo. C. Ashmead. Fine engraved plan, with a vignette of Clifton and the Hot Wells in the top right hand corner, city coat of arms bottom right, table of 143 references listing public buildings, churches, almshouses etc. Covers Bedminster, Redland, Upper Easton, Leigh Woods. Dissected and mounted on linen, overall size of map approx. 24" x 31", folding into 8vo cloth covered boards, printed label. Scale approx. 1" to 1 furlong. The armoury in Stapleton Road and a building near The Mall in Clifton have been coloured in pink wash, and a field in Redland in pale buff. n.d. probably 1846. £250.00
    Ashmead based this map on the work of Joseph Plumley who died after issuing the prospectus for his map. This first Ashmead map measured 75" x 58" with a scale of 200 feet = 1 inch. Ashmead went on to issue smaller, reduced scale, plans of Bristol in 1833, 1846, 1855, 1871 and 1882.

Hand-coloured, folding map dissected and mounted on linen, overall size of engraved surface approx. 19" x 17", trimmed to margins, contained within original 8vo paper slipcase, with manuscript label on top.   18. Anon. PLAN OF THE BOROUGH OF PENZANCE in the County of Cornwall, 1845. Lithographed Plan, hand-coloured in red, grey, buff and blue, size 41" x 45", mounted on linen, scale approx. 2 chains = 1". Decorative title, compass rose, scale bar. Dotted line with yellow wash indicates extent of jurisdiction of borough. Shows buildings in pink and grey, each building and plot numbered, parkland with trees. Slightly rubbed at centre along a crease, but with no loss of printing, small area of rubbing in blank area on right with slight loss of paper, minor creasing throughout, dusty down right-hand edge. Streets and large houses named. No imprint. 1845. £150.00
    Date and 'Penzance tithe map' in manuscript on verso.

  23. Germansweek, Carnanton, Lesnewth, Trefrew ORDNANCE SURVEY MAPS Four maps, quarter sheets, scale 6" to 1 mile, comprising Sheet X S.E., XIV N.E., LXXV N.W., XXXII S.W. A few fields outlined. Second Edition 1907, later reprint. £14.00

    HAND-COLOURED LARGE SCALE MAP

  24. Greenwood (C) & (J) MAP OF THE COUNTY OF CORNWALL, from actual Survey made in the Years 1826 & 1827. Scale: One inch to one mile. Large hand-coloured map, coloured in hundreds, dissected and mounted on linen, edged with green tape. With an engraved inset view of St. Michaels Mount and insett of the Isles of Scilly. Overall size of engraved surface approx. 70" x 72", plus margins, on 2 sheets, folding to roy 8vo, enclosed in a contemporary full tree calf box in the form of a book, rubbed, lacks label on spine. 1st September, 1827. £540.00
    A clean copy, with none of the usual off-setting. 'Copies were available coloured or plain, but unfortunately very few copies have survived to the present day in good condition.' 'In the lower right corner there is a large vignette of St. Michael's Mount.... a beautifully engraved view from the east.... Other noteworthy features are the hachures used in representing relief, and an inset of the Isles of Scilly.... ' Quixley's Antique Maps of Cornwall and the Scilly Isles.


  25. Helstone Boundary REPORT UPON THE PROPOSED MUNICIPAL BOUNDARY of the Borough of Helstone. 2pp., with plan by R.K. Dawson, scale 4" to a mile, by R.K. Dawson. Plan very slightly creased. 1832. £18.00

    WHITSAND BAY HARBOUR

  26. Jones (Henry) REASONS HUMBLY OFFERED For Building a Mould or Harbour in Whitsand-Bay at the Lands-End, in Cornwall. Single folio sheet, closely printed, size approx. 17" x 12" laid down on card, with a window in the card at rear to reveal an engraved plan of the bay by Frederick de Hauttecourt, 1702, printed on verso. Size of plan approx. 6" x 10", scale 1" to the mile, compass rose, soundings, relief crudely indicated, small elevations of 3 churches, 12-line key of letters showing the Long Ships, the Brisons, 'St. Levant', etc. Margins cut down (unevenly on left-hand side), some slight creasing, area of slight staining at right hand side approx. 5" x 3", not affecting plan. n.d. or printer. (1702) £485.00
    RARE. Gives a description of the area 'call'd in Cornish Pullan da', and 12 arguments for building the proposed mold, for want of which 'there hath been, and may be more Ships lost (yearly, besides the Mens lives) than three times the Value of what would Erect the same. Hence the Leverpoole Marchants have possessed those who trade from London that their Ships might come safer North about Ireland.... rather than run the Hazard of having their Ships taken by the Enemy, or wreckt, by reason of the great Dangers of Scilly, the Lands-End, Mount's-Bay, Lizzard'. He goes into detail about the dangerous Tides mentioning 'Sir Cloudesly Shovel's Misfortune at Scilly and the loss of the Colchester Man of War in Whitsand-Bay', and the effect on compasses of the 'many Tynn, Copper, Iron, and other Mineral-Loads'. Other advantages are that it can supply the 'Islands of Scilly, with all things necessary for Her Majesty's Garrison', that there is an abundance of 'loose Rocks or Moore-Stones for filling up and building from the Shoar....', etc. de Hauttecourt was one of the Engineers who surveyed the coast with 'Mr. Tuttell, his late Majesty's Hydrographer'.

    Derived from Saxton's maps, reprinted by Blaeu for 'Camden's Britannia', and published in a 'pocket edition' of Speed's 'Theatre'.


  28. Kitchin (Thomas) A NEW IMPROVED MAP OF CORNWALL from the Best Surveys and Intelligences.... Decorative copper engraved map, hand-coloured in outline, size approx. 20" x 27", fine hand-coloured cartouche with figures etc. Inset of Scilly Isles, short paragraphs of descriptive text dotted around blank areas of the sea. Not all of the imprint is printed correctly. Printed for Carrington Bowles etc.... (1785) £280.00
    The map was published in various editions from 1750. 'The 1750 map is by far the most impressive and attractive map of Cornwall to appear in a complete atlas of the 18th century.... ' Quixley's Antique Maps of Cornwall and the Scilly Isles, page 39.

  31. Marazion PLAN OF SUNDRY TENEMENTS in and near Marazion, the property of The Revd. Canon Rogers. Surveyed 1835 by P. Priske. In ink and 2 colours, scale 3 chains to 1", size 28" x 21", mounted in sections on linen. Shows market house and 8 plots of land, adjoining owners named. Reference table listing 11 plots. 1 section of paper at top right hand corner missing, size 9" x 2", affecting small portion of a road. Some slight bubbling of paper where glued to linen. A few later notes regarding sales, with price. 1835. £24.00

Ordnance Survey THE THIRD PART OF THE GENERAL SURVEY OF ENGLAND AND WALES CONTAINING THE WHOLE OF CORNWALL and a portion of the adjoining County Done by the Surveyors of His Majesty's Ordnance under the Direction of Coll. Mudge of The Royal Artillery F.R. & A.S. Eight map sheets, covering all of Cornwall and part of Devon, title page, and page of 16 borders bound together, paper wraps, back wrap ragged, lacking all of the front wrap except a narrow strip down the bound edge. The set is sewn down the right hand edge, opening from left to right. Comprises: Sheet XXXIII. Bottom edge ragged with tears through Scale bar, imprint with date at bottom left rubbed away, a few grubby marks and minor spots, tear 3" beyond border in sea area; Sheet XXXII, Published 1813; Sheet XXXI, Published 1813. Two 2" tears at bottom edge reinforced on verso; Sheet XXX, Published 1813; Sheet XXIX, Published 1813; Sheet XXV Published 1809; Sheet XXVI, Published 1809. No Scale bar; Sheet XXIV, Published 1809. All sheets without borders except the last three listed, which have borders at left side. Good dark impressions, with wide margins. Smith watermark. 1809-13. £520.00
    Seems to correspond with Margary State 1.

    Covers North Pool Mine in the North to West Wheal Frances in the South. Other mines shown include West Bassett, Wheal Providence, Cook's Kitchen, Tincroft.

  39. Symons (Robt.) & Sons, Land Surveyors, Truro PLAN OF THE PARISH OF MADRON in the County of Cornwall, 1843. Scale approx. 8 chains to 1". Lithographed on two sheets of thick paper mounted on linen, size 49" x 39". Shows buildings, woodland, each field numbered, parcels colour-washed in orange, blue and yellow. Covers Mount's Bay, Chyandour, Carthew, Kerrow, Mulfra and Ninnis. Inset of Madron Church Town at Scale of 3 chains to an inch, including Penzance Workhouse. Compass rose, scale bar, calligraphic title. Slightly dusty throughout, colour slightly faded. Area approx. 10" x 8" at centre of bottom edge affected by dampstaining and light foxing, mainly in margin and blank area. Another area of creasing and dampstaining where paper has turned bright white, with tiny 'bubbles', just above title, not affecting text. Holes at corners where once pinned to wall. 1843. £140.00

  50. Ogilby (John) THE ROAD FROM LONDON TO BARNSTABLE IN DEVONSHIRE 'Ribbon' road map showing route through Andover, Salisbury, Kilmington, Bruton, Bridgewater. Cartouche shows fox-hunting scene. Size 14" x 17", hand-coloured. Some letters in the word 'Salisbury Plain' and in the title rather feint. Framed and glazed, Hogarth-style frame. c1700. £125.00

  51. Start Bay ORDNANCE SURVEY MAP Sheet No. 23, scale 1" to 1 mile, quarter sheet measuring 18" x 13" plus margins, covering Start Point to Berry Head, inland as far as Tuckenhay. Border on all sides. Linen-backed, folding into marbled wraps. 1865. £16.00

  52. Teignmouth and Dawlish ORDNANCE SURVEY MAP Composite map made up of sections from Sheet No. CII.12 and several sheets to the West, pasted together, covering the shore from Teignmouth Old Quay to Dawlish Warren Golf Course. Scale 1/2500, size 26" x 108", titled in MS 'Office Copy of Plan referred to in Messrs. Cluttons Report of 26 May 1908'. Land along the railway, groynes etc., coloured in red, blue and green, with key indicating colours used for land 'conveyed for the construction of the Rwy.', 'Groynes to be included in proposed licence to G.W. Rwy. Coy.' Ms notes in red ink and pencil indicate wall to be maintained by Company, steps, groynes etc. sold. 4" strip down left edge very dusty. Surveyed 1887, revised 1904. £40.00

  53. West Down, near Barnstaple MAP OF PYNES-DEAN IN WEST DOWN Manuscript map in ink and 5 colours, on stiff paper, folded. Size 17" x 26". Scale 3 chains to 1". Calligraphic title, large compass rose, key with numbers on plan, name of field etc., acreage. Shows buildings and orchard near Uffculme road, stream, various fields, with hedges, adjoining owners named. Water-stained throughout, not affecting legibility, rust spots over compass rose, two small holes where folds meet. c1820. £60.00
    The names 'Irish and Parker' are inscribed at bottom of Key.

  55. Collins (Capt. Grenville) PORTLAND Chart showing Lulworth Cove, Weymouth Road, Weymouth and Melcombe, Portland Bill, Crab, Chisham, Portland Castle. Size 17" x 21", plus margins, fully hand coloured. Scale 1" = 1 mile. Vignette bottom left with four figures, goats, dedication to Capt. George St. Lo, bottom right are harvester, animals etc., around scale bar. Compass rose at centre with rhumb lines.   196. Drum Estate, Edinburgh PLAN OF THE DEER PARK OF DRUM WITH SOME OF THE COAL SEAMS which run through the field and the sits which have taken place into them since 1847. The names of the seams are given as far as they are known. Manuscript plan, fairly basic drawing, in ink and colour wash on thick paper backed with linen, 21" x 15", showing several buildings including smithy, roads, lake with island, and 13 coal seams with their names alongside ('Stinkie', 'South Parrot' etc.) Along the seams are numerous small brown coloured ovals, numbered.     This is one of five such sheets which were originally pirated from Ogilby's 'Britannia' and published in Speed's Atlas of 1676. They were also published separately by Bassett and Chiswell in the same year under the title 'The English Travellers Companion'.

Engraved map in two sheets, each sheet size 25" x 37", edges bound with tape, dissected and mounted on linen, folding into cloth slipcase with printed label. County boundaries hand-coloured. With table of Altitudes of Principal Mountains. Some off-setting, two small brown marks in sea area at fold. 1836. £80.00

Lithographed map covering England, Wales and Scotland and the Eastern part of Ireland, showing railways existing, in progress, and with proposed railways in red. Size 32" x 22", linen-backed, folding to 12mo, one board only, paper browned where glued to board, some minor discolouration of paper overall. c1860. £25.00
