Clifton ACCOUNTS FOR NO. 6 RODNEY PLACE Accounts in child's school notebook with engravings of Squirrel and Guinea Pig on front wrap, 4to. 2p of accounts at front of book titled 'Account of Sundries relative to No. 6 in Rodney Place Clifton, June 11th 1793, Purchasd by T. Hincks from W. Stevens', with records of workmen's wages and drink money, 'freestone for Hothouse', amount paid to vendor etc. At rear are 17 double-page spreads ruled in columns, with names of masons, painters, labourers listed with wages and days worked etc., amounts paid for freestone, putty, '79 yds of flags at 2s2d per yd' 'for pennanting and guttering the stable,' etc. etc. June - October 1793. £38.00

  21. Fox (Francis) LETTER to Mr. Fry asking him to accept a copy of his book on the Merchant Taylors. He would like to see the society 'taken up & revived by the Liberal party in our city'. 2 sides sm. 8vo, headed notepaper, small waterstain top corner. Clifton, 22nd Dec. 1880. £14.00
    Fox's book on the Merchant Taylor was published in a Limited Edition of 50 copies in 1880.

  25. Fry (J.S), Chocolate manufacturer TWO LETTERS One to unnamed correspondent, saying that due to illness he will not be able to take part in the meeting on the 16th although 'there is hardly any cause to which I would rather devote any strength I may have than to that of Sunday Schools....', and another to O.F.J. Evans saying he has been advised not to go out so cannot attend the Sunday School Meeting. Each 3p, sm. 8vo, signed Feb. 2nd & 12th, 1876. £20.00

    EMIGRANT TO AUSTRALIA

  26. Garrard (Thomas) REFERENCE. A handwrittten reference from Thomas Garrard Chamberlain of Bristol, attesting to the good character of Stephen Burton and family on the eve of his departure for Australia. They are "of great respectability and long standing in this city." 1 side of a folded foolscap sheet. With a very fine wax seal of Chamberlain's Office, 1«" dia. showing a purse of money. 4th August, 1852. £20.00
    Presumably this either did not accompany Burton to Australia, or he did not go to Australia at this time.


  27. George White & Co. TRANSFER STAMP BOOKS Four folio ledgers titled 'Transfer Stamps', 1902-06; 1906-1913; 1913-1923; 1924-1936.... together with.... Three 'Transfers Registered & Certificates Received' ledgers, 1924-1933; 1906-1915; 1916-1924. 7 ledgers in all, written in a neat hand throughout. 1902-1936. £55.00

  28. Hudd (Alfred), Bristol author LETTER to Lewis Way from Alfred E. Hudd, thanking him for returning a missing deed he had borrowed from All Saints Church, which must have been 'packed up with the Ashton Court MSS while I was making a sketch of the Smythe merchant mark'. He encourages Mr. Way 'to compile a book on the subject of 'the Smyths of Long Ashton'. 3« sides on headed notepaper, sm. 8vo. Dec. 19th, 1908. £14.00

  29. Hunt (William) LETTER presumably to Taylor (co-author of 'Bristol Past & Present'), saying he is writing a book on the part taken by Bristol in general history '& find 'Bristol Past & Present' of the greatest assistance to me'. He asks for information on various points to do with trading companies and guilds. 4p., closely written, sm. 8vo. West Kensington, 8 Feb. n.d. c1886. £16.00
    Hunt's book on Bristol in the Historic Towns series was published in 1887.

  31. Seyer Mr NOTE unsigned, in the third person, addressed on verso to Mr Dalton, St. Pauls, saying Mr Seyer returns the copy of "The Brief Relation" and has copied the 'Commemoration' 'which he supposes came from some sermon preached on Colston's Day.' Single sheet, sm 4to, two portions torn from side margins where seal removed. March 9, 1821. £18.00

  32. Somerton (W.H) LINES Printed in the Streets of Bristol, During the Procession in Honour of the Coronation of His Majesty King George IV, July 19, 1821, by William Henry Somerton, of Queen Street, St. Michaels. Broadsheet, 10" x 6", embossed ownership stamp, small hole with loss of a few letters, tear at edge. 1821. £20.00

  33. St. George ACCOUNT of the Expenses of Mr. Jeffreson as executor of his sister Mary Morgan, of St. George. Small 4to sheet listing cost for mourning rings, bequests to individuals, poor of parishes in Cambridge and St. George. Paper browned down edge. Together with a folded sheet with rough sketches of a monument and a written inscription below 'daughter of Coll. Jeffreson of Dullingham in ye County of Cambridge....' giving information on her three husbands, the third one being from St. George. 1706. £25.00
    Amongst the payments in the account is 'To ye Stone Cutter at Bristoll payd for my sisters Monument.... œ12.03.00d.

  42. Little Meols WATERCOLOUR showing lighthouse with thatched cottages adjacent, flagpole, another house behind lighthouse and what looks like a roofless cottage. In sepia tones, with drawing in brown pen, size 6«" x 8«", covering the page right to the edges, in olive mount with gilt line. Titled along left hand margin:- 'Lighthouse Little Meols. Sept. 13. 1811.' £38.00

  43. Macclesfield PROBATE of the Will and Codicil of William Broome. 3 vellum sheets, 22" x 28", paper impessed seal attached. 1893. £14.00
    Broome lived at Santa Barbara in California but the will refers to his property at Macclesfield, as well as his 'rancho of Guadalasca at Ventura'.

  50. Anon CORNWALL ILLUSTRATED IN A SERIES OF FIFTY VIEWS. With an engraved decorative title-page, and 49 engraved views, no letterpress, occasional spotting, small water stain to top margin of approx half the plates, sm 8vo, contemporary half calf, marbled boards, lightly rubbed, lacks half of front endpaper, name on front pastedown. London: 1824. £125.00
    RARE. There is no printer or publisher, and only the title page has the attribution of an engraver and the artist John Sell Cotman. Not found in Boase and Courtney's Bibliotheca Cornubiensis.


  51. Bacon's COUNTY MAP OF CORNWALL with parts of Adjoining Counties. On linen, with index, folding into sm. 8vo wraps showing cyclists. c1920. £6.00

  52. Bassett (Francis), Lord de Dunstanville FIVE LETTERS all addressed to Francis Paynter, at Mitchell and St. Columb (presumably his attorney). 4to, 1-3 pages in a rather scrawly hand in each letter, all with integral address panels, wax seals, most docketed by recipient 'Lord Dunstanville abt. the sale of Mitchell lands' etc. Refers to his disposal of 'Polgreen in pr. Wenn, Penscowen in Ennoder', and land at Mitchell: 'Mr Rasheleigh is of opinion that Lord Eliot & Barnell mean to oppose me at Mitchell as well as Sir Christopher.... my friends there may be well inclined to me, but it is difficult to say how far they might be seduced by money offered by Barnell... I am much obliged by your kind offer of Mr. Davis Estate, but I have no present wish to increase my property at Penryn, besides I fear the approaching Election will more than take off all my spare Cash.' 1781-99. £80.00

  54. Camborne LETTER from Mr. Geo. Jeffery to Mr. Stephens of Devonport, saying he is determined to get out of mining and listing three lots of shares resigned on which the Calls are paid to October. 1p 4to, folded, integral address panel, Camborne postmark, tear where seal broken, repaired. 1838. £16.00

  56. Cornwall Minerals Railway Co. MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS AT A SPECIAL BOARD MEETING 22nd July 1873. Manuscript, 5p. signed by Chairman, size 15" x 9", plain wraps with MS title, horizontal fold, wraps rather grubby. Pasted in at relevant points are 3 notices, one giving notice of first Ordinary General Meeting of the new company, for electing Directors, etc., notice requesting Shareholders submit old shares for new issue under the 1873 Act, and covering letter explaining the conversion to a Parliamentary Company. 1873. £80.00
    'From a personal inspection of the Works on the above Railway made within the last few days, I am satisfied that the Contractor, Sir. S. Peto, has so far advanced the work as to justify me in recommending that the payment which would be due to him under his Contract on the 7th proximo be made.... W.H. Thomas, Engineer'. The railway was revitalised under the speculator W.R. Roebuck 'he formed the Cornwall Minerals Railway, authorized on 21 July 1873' a number of standard gauge mineral lines 'all opened after feverish activity on 1 June 1874'.   57.   59. Gill & Son, Penryn, Pub. THE COMMERCIAL SHIPPING & GENERAL ADVERTISER for West Cornwall. No. 153, May 7th 1870. Newspaper, 4pp., consisting mainly of adverts, but on last page are three columns of W. Cornwall news, mainly Penryn and Falmouth. May 7th 1870. £10.00
    The paper was given away free.


  60. Hendy & James, Solicitors, Truro A PROSPECTUS of the Truro and Perran Rail Road. 2pp., sm. folio, folded, docket title. Sets out advantages of the line to the Agricultural, Mining and Commercial interests, includes table estimating yearly trade on the line, for Perran Sand, Coals, Timber etc. from Truro for country consumption, and Mining business. 1st December 1830. £75.00
    A plan and Report originally accompanied the Prospectus. It was proposed to raise a Capital of œ20,000. The line 'not only embraces the established Mines of Wheal Leisure, and St. George, but it includes in its route the following new ones:- Wheal Prosper, East Wheal Fortune, Drosken, Wheal Ramoth, Penhale.... '


  61. Kitchin (Thomas) A NEW IMPROVED MAP OF CORNWALL from the Best Surveys and Intelligences.... Decorative engraved map, hand coloured in outline, size approx. 20" x 27", fine cartouche etc., inset of Scilly Isles, short paragraphs of descriptive text dotted around blank areas. Lacks piece 4" x 2" at central fold, being area from Probus to the North coast. Several tears and creases at margins, crack along central fold, the whole laid down onto thin papaper. Printed for T.     MARRIAGE SETTLEMENT

  67. St. Ive, Cornwall DEED of William Morsehead to his brother Richard to make a jointure to Joan Pirkin his intended wife. Relates to the property called Penhergett. Vellum 14" x 24", good clean condition, crude heavy wax seal on tag, diameter 1", impressed with a spiral (possibly meant to be a snake?). 1667. £18.00
