  12. Clark (J.A) Drawn by NEW GUILDHALL, BRISTOL. To the Right Worshipful James Gibbs, Esq., Mayor of Bristol, by whose exertions during his period of office the plan for erecting a new Guildhall was greatly forwarded, and by whom the ceremony of laying the Foundation Stone was performed on the 30th of October 1843.   17. Routh & Peach, Bridge St., Prs. SARAH FARLEY'S BRISTOL JOURNAL Saturday, December 22, 1792. Broadsheet newspaper with large banner title, woodcut of Britannia-type figure holding the City arms. 4pp. 1792. £20.00
    Contains one-column report of the meeting for the making of a canal 'from Bristol, to join the River Severn at Gloucester', Henry Bengough in the Chair. Also contains one column on meeting at Taunton for considering the making of a Canal from Bristol to Taunton, and a report on a meeting at Devizes for a Canal linking Bristol Bath and Salisbury and the interior parts of Wiltshire and Hampshire.

  51. Blight (J.T) PARC-AN-CHAPEL, CAPE CORNWALL. Manuscript, signed, by Blight. With an India paper proof of a wood-engraving of the ruins of the chapel, 3" x 4", pasted under the signature. 4to, 2p, headed 'For Publication', the paper has been folded and is rather creased down one side. Loosely inserted in plain wrappers, with a cutting from an early bookseller's catalogue describing the item, and a MS note of an ancient cross found nearby, taken from Buller's 'Account of the Parish of St. Just'. c1856. £200.00
    The wood-engraved illustration, of which this is a proof copy, appears in Blight's Ancient Crosses and other Antiquities....
    This manuscript was printed in 'Willis's Current Notes,' 1856.


  52. Callington RELEASE IN FEE of share in a house in Callington and a road out of the adjoining field, part of the Manor of Manaton, Peter Hill to John Palmer. 2 large vellum sheets, 2 good armorial wax seals, includes schedule of deeds etc. back to 1682. Vellum dusty and slightly faded, but legible, throughout.... together with.... LEASE FOR A YEAR for the property, single vellum sheet. 1813. £15.00

  53. Cary (C & G) MAP Covering Forrabury, Mawgan Point, Helland. Scale half an inch to one mile, size 19" x 25", plus margins, outline colouring, coloured border to map and inset map, scale bar. With inset of Scilly Isles and Land's End, size 11" x 17". Some edge tears and light browning due to damp. July 1st, 1820. £25.00

  54. Cornwall Boiler Co. ARCHITECT'S DRAWINGS Two detailed scale drawings on waxed cotton, in ink, one with some colour, size 22" x 18", showing 'Section through Rivetting Tower', 'Detail of Gate', and larger scale detail of top of rivetting tower, the other size 23" x 34", showing 'South Elevation' and 'West Elevation', of rivetting tower on a long building of two stories with 5 windows on ground floor, eight on the first floor, and a single storey extension, and a separate building with round window. Both signed by architects. Sept. 1892. £60.00

  55. Devon Consols Mine, Stokeclimsland FOR SALE BY PUBLIC AUCTION on Thursday the 7th December, 1854, at Twelve O'Clock at Noon, on the Devon Consols West Mine.... The Whole of the Valuable Mine Materials &c Comprising: a 14in Cylinder Steam Pumping Engine, Equal Beam, 6 feet Stroke, with Boiler, Balance Bob; Horse Whim; Winch and Chain; Sheers and Sheaves; about 30fms 3in. Whim Rope.... Poster, size 22" x 17", listing 43 items of mine equipment. Brown off-setting of lettering throughout, as often happens when several posters stored together, small hole in one letter at top, a few edge tears, and some small repaired tears in part of text where paper is slightly brittle. Solicitor's note regarding affadavit of one John Clemo concerning this advertisement. 1854. £90.00

  56. Harris (John), Cornish Poet LETTER dated Killigrew Terrace, Falmouth 26 Oct. 1866, to Rev. S. Rogers, accompanying a copy of 'Shakespere's Shrine', signed John Harris. 8 lines on 1 side of sm. 8vo paper, in a rather untidy hand.... together with.... small postcard dated 13 Nov. 1871, signed J. Harris, addressed to Rev. Saltern Rogers at Gwennap Vicarage acknowledging the receipt of stamps for his 'copy of my new work & I am much obliged for your continued patronage'. 1866 and 1871. £32.00
    Harris published 'Shakespere's Shrine, an Indian story, essays and poems.' in September 1866. The book refered to in the postcard is probably 'Bulo, Reuben Ross'. The Revd. Saltern Rogers later became President of the Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society.

  58. King Edward Mine SURFACE PLAN Manuscript plan, probably a student survey, on thick cartridge paper in ink and and bright colour wash. Shows Plantation Shaft, Vyvyan Shaft, William's Shaft etc., ditches, hedges, rough ground, various buildings including Fitting Shop, Vanning Shop, Assay Office etc. With 'Legend'. Scale 1:500, size 29" x 52", rolled. 1968. £40.00

  59. Kitchin (Thos) A NEW IMPROVED MAP OF CORNWALL from the Best Surveys and Intelligences Divided into its Hundreds. Shewing the several Roads and true Measured Distances between Town & Town. Also the Rectories and Vicarages the Parks & Seats of the Nobility & Gentry with other useful Particulars Regulated by Astronomical Observations. Engraved map, hand-coloured in outline, size 21" x 27", with attractive title cartouche, hand-coloured, with figures, mining tools etc., inset of Isles of Scilly, dedication to Lord Edgecumb, list of Earls of Cornwall, brief descriptions of major towns. Printed for Carington Bowles in St. Pauls Church Yard & Robt. Sayer in Fleet Street. (1750). £250.00
    `This map is by far the most impressive and attractive map of Cornwall to appear in a complete atlas of the 18th century....' Quixley. There were several reprints between 1755 and 1794 and Quixley mentions no differences between these later editions.


  60. Langdon (Arthur) TWO LETTERS One to an unknown correspondent in Gwennap who has replied to Langdon's request for information by describing a cross in his garden 'I only get replies to about one letter in ten that I write for facts relating to crosses.... I shall certainly accept your kind invitation to call, and should like if possible to get down to the bottom of your cross as it appears to be buried'. 3p, sm. 8vo, dated Craven Street, Strand, 12 Sept. 90. The other letter is dated 'Portscatho, Sunday' apparently to a vicar, possibly the same correspondent, as he mentions Gwennap, thanking him for information about crosses, and saying he plans to run over to Mawnan that week. 'Excuse my saying so, but as a rule I find it most difficult to get anything out of the Cornish clergy.... e.g. three letters to the S. Erth man (I forget his name) have never been answered....' 1890 and later. £55.00

  62. Le Grice (Rev. C.V) A HYMN for the opening of the rebuilt Church at Morvah on the North West Coast of Cornwall A.D. 1828. Hymn of seven verses printed on one side of single sheet, with decorative border. Size 11" x 5", margins slightly trimmed, to just below imprint. Vigurs, Printer, Penzance, (1828) £28.00

  63. Liskeard REPORT ON THE BOROUGH AND TOWN OF LISKEARD. 2pp, with a folding plan by R.K. Dawson, coloured in outline. Scale 2" to 1 mile. Folio, disbound. 1832. £18.00

Quiller Couch. 3 pages in an informal, chatty style, announcing the birth of his little girl 'a plump person, considered not uncomely', and the reaction of her brother 'he has taken to his sister beautifully'. He asks Mrs Russell to tell her husband that 'at last I have written a story with which I am pleased - as yet. In a little while I shall quite probably think it bosh. But he is to look out for it this autumn. And though I hope he'll like it I shall not be hurt if he doesn't - never am, over these things.'   83. Stokes (H. Sewell) LETTER on headed notepaper of Clerk of the Peace, Bodmin, dated 23rd Jany. 1871, to a Mr. Wilkinson (apparently a clergyman), 3p, 8vo (52 lines in all). He thanks Mr. Wilkinson for his kind comments on the poems, and goes on to explain how he came to write them. 1871. £35.00
    He says his early verses were 'just as wild as Swinburne's.... I never altered a coarse or impure expression. But educated so peculiarly as I was, removed from School in England at 15, and then placed under Spanish, French & Italian teachers at Gibraltar for 3 years and taking the whole range of Rousseau & others of that school, it was not to be wondered at that I became wild in politics & on more serious matters.' The poems mentioned were presumably 'Rhymes from Cornwall', published in 1871.

Wright's 'English Dialect Dictionary' was published in 6 volumes between 1898 and 1905.

    The letter is a long and detailed argument against the imposition of a fixed scale of duty on imported corn, in place of a sliding scale. 'I am still of the opinion that the most ruinous consequences to the Farmer would result from letting loose upon the consumption large masses of Corn at once.... ' The writer had apprently given evidence before a Commons Select Committee on Agriculture in 1833. He also mentions that he himself had 'sold beef at Manchester, at fourteen pence per lb. to common Weavers, in the year 1815'.

  163. Corfe area DIARY of a young solicitor, 6th October, 1862 - 1868. 63p, folio, in an very untidy and hasty hand, no wraps, sewing of sections loose. Contemporary photograph of husband, wife, and two teenage daughters at their front door pasted to first page. The diary covers a long period and is not regularly kept up. He recounts his struggles in the law 'Had the opportunity of defending a youth from charge of stealing. Feel averse to appearing publicly but that I must....', occasionally cases he is involved in, Liberal politics 'Attended meeting of the Liberal Committee. Was appointed corresponding Secretary....', the Sunday school, resolutions to be a better Christian, his family, visits to the theatre, children's illnesses, general soul-searching, etc. Places mentioned include Corfe (which he goes to on foot), Poole, Bournemouth. 1862-68. £95.00

Wilkenthroop, Horsington FARM ACCOUNT BOOKS of Peter and Uriah Martin, Wilkenthroop, Horsington. 2 parchment bound books, narrow folio, 86 pages, and 214 pages, with entries dated between 1766 and 1839, with a few pages of later accounts 1843-50. Every page is full of writing. Includes expenditure on such items as beasts ('Bought 10 oxen of Jas. Hammet of Winkley at 64.0.0.'), walling stone, pavier, household items such as candles, nutmegs, tobacco, etc., re-decorating a room (lime, nails, hair, 'flowering sprigs', plaster, labour, etc.), a record of servants arriving and departing, and payment in cash and kind 'Sarah Penney went away the 7th day of November. Betsey Colins came the same day. Had pair of pattens, 0.1.0d, Lincey for apron, 0.1.10d, Lent for to pay her house rent 0.4.0d', payment to workers for ploughing, hedging, sowing etc., 'An Account of what we made of the cow that we killd of James Days 1793... Sarah Penny, Belly & Feet 0.l.4 (there follows list of 20 names), 'An Account of the Cheese that have been made this year...', 'An Account of what Butter have been made...', and long lists of cows sent to the bull. There are also various signed memoranda for letting of land etc., notes on deaths in the parish 'The Revd. Jno. Wickham Died Aug. ye 21st 1783. Aged 55 years. His Funirel sermon was preached by the Revd. Mr. Bishop in Horsington Church....', and a section where births and deaths of family members are listed. Various small receipts etc., loosely inserted, including a permit for Peter Martin to receive one cask of rum from J. Hoare. As is usual with these types of accounts they are chronologically untidy, with spaces in the earlier accounts filled up with entries from later years to save paper, although the handwriting throughout is neat and clear. Some pieces have been snipped from the bottom of a few pages, and the first volume seems to be lacking some pages at the end. 1766-1850. £250.00

Original cloth, title and two decorative views in gilt on front board, respined, original spine laid down, decorative endpaper which is glued to inside front and back boards trimmed at inner edge and neatened with strip of cloth, back free endpaper replace. Edges of cloth slightly rubbed, boards slightly faded. Gilt edges, tissue guards, three plates have small crease across top corner of margin, some feint spotting to part of last plate.
