Memorandum of Deposit of Debenture Stock, to The London City & Midland Bank, 1900. 3p., folio, folded... with small group of letters relating to shares, and 38 typed letters on headed paper of the Brewery, mostly very short, circa 1905... Printed Report and Accounts for 1900, 1901, 1903, 1905, and a manuscript balance sheet 1907.
¶ The New Brewery was established in 1774, in Shaddongate. Brewing stopped there in 1917 and the buildings were demolished in 1973.

A SURVEY OF THREE FIELDS IN THE PARISH OF DISTINGTON belonging to Benn Gilliat, called Haverigg, Benn Close & Tom Close, done by B.G. in the Year 1779.
Manuscript plan in ink and colour, size 11" x 13". Large oval cartouche, pair of dividers with scale bar, placed horizontally, and small table of acreage, across the middle of the plan, with one large field above and two smaller ones below. Decorative coloured compass rose in each field. Roads shown, a few trees, and small drawing of a house, with lake behind, and carriage passing in front, bottom left. Paper uniformly browned, colours muddy and faded, presumably due to acid in paper which was placed behind it (not pasted on) when once framed. The browning has made a few words difficult to read. The is a note in the dividers 'All the Hedges that is black (& not coloured), belongs to the Premises.'
¶ An interestingly composed plan.

Notice is Hereby Given, That John Sadler, John Marshall, and John Fryer, the Commissioners appointed.... by an Act of Parliament.... entitled 'An Act for dividing and inclosing the Commons and Waste Lands, within the several Parishes of Penrith, Edenhall, Salkeld.... intend to meet at the George Inn, Penrith....

Notebook size 6" x 4", red morocco boards, spine worn at top. 232 pages in a neat hand, with names of rent payers on right (some months there are about 20 names), and amount, and on left disbursements, which include taxes, money for repairs, 'cash for ale at Mrs Tweddles for Workmen at Kingmoor', 'Richd. Cowin for Thatching at Rockcliff', 'Wm. Sowerby for a Pump Tree for Hill House', 'Mary Hudart her Annuity'.
¶ Among the payers of rent are 'The Botchergate Foundry'. As well as Kingmoor and Rockcliff mentions Warehouses in Abbey St., Milthorp, Braithwaite. A note on the endpaper of 1854 reads 'Angus Beles was sold to Isaac Brown for £3000. Better Farm than Hill House. R.A.'

Kirklinton, near Brampton
HOLE SHIELDS belonging Mr Thos. Blaylock. Surveyed Decr. 1814 by Wm. Graham.
Manuscript plan in ink and colours on thick paper backed with linen, rolled. Scale 2 chains to 1 inch, scale bar and compass rose. Size 49" x 29". Fanciful, rather amateurish watercolour of Justice carrying scales and sword top left. Covers an estate stretching in the north from the road to Brampton and Langholm over Howford Bridge in the north, to the intersection of the road to Kirklinton Church and the road from Carlisle in the south. Shows building at the centre, John Hope's cottages in south, meadows, woodland and plantations, with acreages, wells, watering trough, boundary stones, Hethersgill and Quarters Quarry Ground, Hether Rivulet, rocks at quarry, footpath, etc. Adjoining owners named. Reference Table listing 23 Closes etc., and on left a 'Description of Situation &c', giving details about Tithes, boundary hedges, rights to quarrying, details of the Moss belonging to the estate etc. Some cracking in paper at top and bottom, not affecting linen, including a tear in paper approx. 1ft. long from top edge, not affecting linen.
¶ On the 1864 6" Ordnance Survey map Hole Shields is shown as a large house just north of the Hether Burn, near Quarrybrow.

HAZELSPRING FARM The Property of The Right Honble. Lord Leconfield. 1864. Traced from unfinished Ordnance Plans of the Parish Westward.
Lightly coloured manuscript plan in brownish tracing paper mounted on paper then on linen, size 28" x 30", folding into 8vo marbled wraps. Scale 25" to 1 mile. Shows buildings at Wallace Lane, Hazelspring, Hilltop, Studholme Rigg Wood, fields with acreage etc., river, streams, roads... together with... HILL TOP FARM The Property of the Right Honble Lord Leconfield. 1864. Similar plan, size 33 " x 55", folding into 8vo marbled wraps. The two plans fit together, with some overlap. The area of Hazelspring Farm is coloured pink and Hill Top Farm green. Neat manuscript labels on wraps. 2 items.
