  7. Carlisle, Silloth, Bewcastle Fells TWO ORDNANCE SURVEY MAPS Sheets 11/12/17/18 and Sheet 7. Scale 1" to 1 mile. The first sheet size 26" x 37", plus margins, covering Silloth, Carlisle, Bewcastle Fells (the Scottish side of the Solway is blank), and the second 26" x 18", plus margins, covering Caplestone Fell, Kielderhead Moor (in bottom right corner, the rest blank). Both sheets dissected and mounted on linen, folding into large 4to marbled wraps, small key plan on front wrap. Small library stamp on verso. Two items. 1897. £45.00

    The property was held under the Manor, the Lord of which was the Duke of Devonshire.

Dalston PARTICULARS AND CONDITIONS OF SALE of Freehold and Copyhold Estates, in the Parish of Dalston, and known as the 'Gill' and 'Greensyke' Estates, containing about 350 Acres, together with the Mansion House, Farm House, Dwelling Houses, Stables, Coach-Houses, Barns.... which will be Sold by Public Auction... 19th July, 1882. 6pp., folio, docket title, very large folding coloured plan. 1882. £32.00
    'The Mansion House stands in a handsomely timbered Park, through which the Gill Beck winds its way, and is most substantially built in the Tudor Style.'

  13. Drigg GEOLOGICAL SURVEY Sheet No. 99 N.E. Fully hand-coloured map, scale 1" to 1 mile, size approx. 13" x 15", plus wide margins, key in margin. Embossed Ordnance stamp, 1905. £20.00
    Almost two-thirds of the map is sea area.


  14. Great Croglin A BILL for Inclosing Lands in Great Croglin, in the County of Cumberland. 33pp., sm. folio, disbound, separately paginated. Docket title, traces of folds. A few leaves with some slight discoloration in right margin. With amendments and corrections in ink in a neat contemporary hand throughout. 1808. £28.00
    Refers to rights to Mines of Coal, Lead, Tin, Copper, Minerals, Stones, Fossils, etc. The Lord of the Manor who was entitled to Mines and Minerals was the Earl of Egremont. Presumably the Bill was amended prior to becoming an Act.


  15. Grinsdale FARMER'S PURCHASE BOOK 1834-43 and 1871. Cash book of Thomas Sibson, size 14" x 6", calf spine, marbled front wrap, lacks back wrap. 26 pages (completely filled) listing items purchased and amounts, 1834-43, and 4 pages for 1872. Many blank pages at end. Includes payments for stock, manure, barley, rye, cow and mare covering, shearing, bills for saddlery, lime, timber, bricks, payments to named workers, taxes, etc. There are also 4p of 1901 accounts, mainly concerning annuities to Jane Sibson, and payments to Building Society. Loosely inserted is a torn folio sheet with manuscript schedules 'Valuation of Grinsdale Estate late the property of Mrs Westray decd.' 1834-1901. £75.00
    Items include 'Mr John Graham 12 ewes at 16/- and 10 lambs at 7/-'; 'Mr John Graham three marsh stints'; 'The Earl of Lonsdale young bull', 'Mr Brown horsebreaker'.

  17. Inglewood Forest INCLOSURE Honor of Penrith and Forest of Inglewood. Notice is Hereby Given, That John Sadler, John Marshall, and John Fryer, the Commissioners appointed.... by an Act of Parliament.... entitled 'An Act for dividing and inclosing the Commons and Waste Lands, within the several Parishes of Penrith, Edenhall, Salkeld.... intend to meet at the George Inn, Penrith.... for the Purpose of reading over and executing their General Award.... this first Day of October, 1819.   18. Kendal LETTER from John Whitwell, dated Kendal June 26th 1834, to Ann Atkinson in Finsbury Pavement, London. 3«p, 4to, integral address panel with wax seal and 2 postmarks. The writer obviously a Quaker, refers to various meetings, visit to Shap '14 to 15 small sleeping rooms have been added and much done & doing in the way of laying out planting &c.... saw Moreland Meeting for the first time, it is a very quiet sequestered spot.', financial matters 'What a large hole in the funds of the National Stock D. Wheeler seems to have made.... I hope friends will let it pass by this time....' 1834. £25.00

Penrith MARY BELL'S ASIGNMENT Whereas Mary Bell, of Penrith, Milliner & Straw Bonnet Maker, hath by an indenture... assigned all her Personal Estate to the said John Pattinson and Joseph Birkett... In Trust for the benefit of... her Creditors... Poster, size 11" x 9", heading in large letters., informing creditors of the indenture held at Brunskill's, Solicitors. B.T.   26. Solway Moss, Longtown GEOLOGICAL SURVEY Sheet No. 107 N.E. (New Series Sheet 11). Fully hand-coloured map, scale 1" to 1 mile, size approx. 13" x 19", plus margins, linen-backed, key in margin. Embossed Ordnance stamp, 1890. £10.00
    Shows only a small portion in bottom right corner, as the area beyond the Scottish border is blank.


  27. Steel (James) Printer THE FARMER'S REAL FRIEND. Copy of a Letter addressed by an influential Landed Proprietor to a Yeoman of "Canny Cumberland." Broadside, in ten paragraphs, printed on one side only, size approx. 20" x 12", couple of small holes where once folded, few short tears with neat repairs with archival tape to verso. James Steel, Printer, Journal Office, Carlisle. c1840? £40.00
    The letter is a long and detailed argument against the imposition of a fixed scale of duty on imported corn, in place of a sliding scale. 'I am still of the opinion that the most ruinous consequences to the Farmer would result from letting loose upon the consumption large masses of Corn at once.... ' The writer had apparently given evidence before a Commons Select Committee on Agriculture in 1833. He also mentions that he himself had 'sold beef at Manchester, at fourteen pence per lb. to common Weavers, in the year 1815'.


  28. Westward CERTIFICATE OF REDEMPTION OF THE LAND TAX for John Taylor of Stonecarse, Clerk. Printed certificate with coat of Arms, manuscript insertions, size 15" x 17", signed by the two commissioners. Form printed on verso for 16 installments, headed 'Consols' in MS, with last installment completed. Refers to parcel of land in the Township of Blencogo in Bromfield, and and tenement in the Township of Stoneraise in Westward. Fixed to the corner are two certificates for amounts of Land Tax. 1798. £20.00

  29. Westward, near Wigton HAZELSPRING FARM The Property of The Right Honble. Lord Leconfield. 1864. Traced from unfinished Ordnance Plans of the Parish Westward. Lightly coloured manuscript plan in brownish tracing paper mounted on paper then on linen, size 28" x 30", folding into 8vo marbled wraps. Scale 25" to 1 mile. Shows buildings at Wallace Lane, Hazelspring, Hilltop, Studholme Rigg Wood, fields with acreage etc., river, streams, roads... together with... HILL TOP FARM The Property of the Right Honble Lord Leconfield. 1864. Similar plan, size 33 " x 55", folding into 8vo marbled wraps. The two plans fit together, with some overlap. The area of Hazelspring Farm is coloured pink and Hill Top Farm green. 2 items. Neat manuscript labels on wraps. Signed W.L.M. 12th March 1864. £80.00

  30. Wigton FEOFFMENT of a parcel of ground in Wigton, called the Croft, part of land formerly called Black Swan Croft, near John Meal's warehouse, Anne Drewry to George Winter. Vellum, size 21" x 27", two small holes affecting a few letters, wax seal. 1820. £16.00

  31. Wreay, Hesket ABSTRACT OF TITLE to a house and lands in Wreay, and land in Hesket. 3p., folio. 1856. £8.00
    Details title from 1830. Names mentioned include Longrigg and Harrison.
