(ii) Rents at Michaelmas for the three villages, 1758, 1760, 1761, Lady Day 1762, Beans & Peas, Oats, Barley, in various fields, 1785, an account of Cash, bills due, etc. upon Mr Essex' death, 1796. At the end of the book are another 8 pages of copy letters and instructions for 'Back Painting' ('Take a piece of Crown glass the size of the print you intend to paint...'). The letters are: from George Selby in London to his father about the sale of the Bailiwick and the death of his cousin of Holy Island, to a Mr Tate about the same subject 'it is whispered about Alnwick that I disposed of my late Bailiwick to you for a sum of money... a most cursed Lie...', and to his brother about his reasons for leaving the north 'I was sorry I had not the Honour of seeing the Duke before I left the North altho I went to the Castle for that purpose & I saw Mr Carr who acquainted the Dutchess and returned to me with an answer that the Duke was very ill in Bed of the Gout... Ellingham SALE OF FARMING STOCK Brockley Hall, March 24, 1848. By J.O. Stamp. Notebook, small 8vo, stiff marbled wraps, 11 double-page spreads recording the sale, in columns for Lot No., Article, Purchaser, Amount... together with... two printed notices of distraint for the sale, details in manuscript, a final account with sum raised, auctioneers costs etc., and a number of letters concerning compensation to the tenant for 'damage done by carting to and from the Tilery across the Moor'. 1848. £46.00
¶ The sale included shovels, forks, harrows, 'killing stool', 'corn bogie', ewes in lamb, 'wedder hogs' etc. The tenant was Adam Tindall and the landlord the Duke of Northumberland. He owed a large amount of rent.

¶ The plans of the camps are very finely drawn, showing buildings, woodland etc., with delicate hachuring. Mac-Lauchlan published 'A Memoir written during a Survey of the Watling Street from the Tees to the Scotch border in 1850 and 1851...' in 1852, and later 'A Map of the Roman Wall' in 1860, and 'A Map of Northumberland shewing the Ancient Camps & Roads....' in 1866.

Stannington FARMING RECORD BOOK of the Vicar of Stannington, recording mowing, tithes paid etc. Vellum bound book, size 8" x 6", originally used as a school copy book, name on flyleaf 'T.C. son livre le 21 mai 1814. Fait a l'ecole de Monsieur Barlow 1815'. 36 pages at the front of accounts naming Dorset firms (probably an invented for a student exercise rather than real firms), and at the back 35 pages of mathematical problems, currency conversion etc. The book has been used later to record haymaking, yearly, 1818-1844, and 1867-69, naming mowers, number of 'pikes' made, wages, ale bought, occasionally weather, and for the earlier years, 1818-1822, the 'Small Tithes' paid, naming payer, calf, goose, pig, etc., paid, and 'Great Tithes', rents for properties, 'Mrs Hall's composition for Cattraw', 'Mrs Hall's Stints', 'Sir M. W. Ridley's half year's tithe' etc. 1815-69. £90.00

¶ Details various manors, mansion house, houses, farms, etc. This was no doubt the family of Vice-Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood, who was according to the D.N.B 'of an old Northumberland family which had fallen into reduced circumstances'.
