  1. Bacon's MAP OF HERTFORDSHIRE Reduced from the Ordnance Survey. Colour printed map size approx. 12«" x 18", central fold. Reduced from the Ordnance Survey, scale ¬" to 1 mile. Divided into 5 mile squares. c1885. £10.00

  2. Baldock, Astwick ACCOUNT BOOKS Six volumes of accounts, from 1775 - 1843. Comprises: (i) 'Edw. Fossey His Book. April the 23rd 1775.' 178 pages 'Account of the Money Disburs'd to the Poor' from Easter 1775 to Easter 1796, listing names of recipients, sums spent on clothes, burials, doctor, etc., e.g. 'paid Peerry and M. Draper for affeydavit and laying out Edw. Pratt... 2s.6d.', 'paid for a pair of shoes for young Pratt... 3s 6d', 'Pd for Crape & Wooll for Widdow Willis 3s.', then follows a nine-page list of calves born. There is also a note that on 13th Oct. 1775 Edmd. Fossey, Revd. James Chesshyre and others 'whent the Bounds of the Parrish of Wallington...'. At the other end of the book is 'A Rate Made by the Church Wardens & Overseers of the Poor & others of the Parish of Wallington... for the Nessecary Relief of the Poor... 1776 - 1795. 2 pages for each year. Lists ratepayers (7 of them), with amounts. Quarter calf, vellum boards, 4to, calf split down one hinge. (ii) Notebook with stiff marbled wraps, 4to, title on front wrap 'Servants Higher'd Houses Lett' for the years 1789-1809. Lists servants by name, all hired at Christmas, 4p., then a list of properties iwth rents 1788-1840. 75p. For example 'lett Mr Wm. Logdon my place at Baldock late Barkers for £60 a year'. Includes 'house at Clorthall', 'house at Redhill' etc. At the back is an account of hedges cut 1770-1820, 14p. (iii) 'Edward Fossey Astwick. Day Labour & Memorandum Book from Michaelmas 1827' then subsequent years added up to 1839. Vellum bound notebook, size 8" x 6", manuscript title as above on front board. Records weekly wages paid, approx. 8 people named each week, intersperesed with reports on sowing, harvent etc. 'Branded my Sheep and thre was 93 lambs, 117 ewes, 98 weathers, 3 rams'. At the other end of the book is 'Account of what was sent to the Mill to be Ground'. 10p. In all 324 pages, all full... together with similarly title book for Michaelmas 1839-1842. 116 pages plus many blanks. (iv) Wheat, Barley, Oats, Pease 1802-1826. Vellum bound book, size 8" x 9", titled on front board. Record no. of loads sold, acreage grown, to whom sold, value. (v) Account of the Wheat Sold as Grew harvest 1846. 6p. only in vellum bound 4to book. Six volumes in all. 1775-1843. £340.00
    Fossey or his family seems to have owned numerous properties. He refers to Monks Wood, Lufmill, Redhill, Baldock: 'my Malting at Baldock, use of Kiln Plate... I to have a share with them in the Malting Business', 'my house against Sisters, High Street Baldock, she to pay the Rates'.


  3. Berkhampstead LETTER signed 'Brownlow', on notepaper headed 'Ashridge, Gt. Berkhampstead', to an unknown correspondent, date only 'Aug. 11th'. 3p., small 8vo. Answers an enquiry about 'the butts', 'I may mention the great butt is a large affair made of oak timber... but the small butts are only stacks of underwood about fifteen feet deep, and I never knew a bullet go through them...' no date. c1890? £8.00

  4. Boxmoor PARTICULARS AND CONDITIONS OF SALE of the Charming and Compact Residential Property known as Felden Grange... close to Sheethanger Common, XVIth Century Farmhouse... Two Cottages, Lovely Old-World Gardens... for Sale by Auction... 13th December, 1938. 9pp., small folio, stiff printed wraps, which are slightly dusty at edges, 3 tipped-in photographs. 1938. £16.00

  5. Buntingford AUCTION SALE PARTICULAR of the Attractive Country Residence of Queen Anne and Georgian Architecture known as Coleshill House, Westmill, near Buntingford... for sale by Auction... 8th May, 1935. 8pp., plus two photographic plates, folding plan at rear. Stiff wraps, with tipped-on photograph, edges of wraps dusty. 1935. £18.00

  6. Buntingford SALE PARTICULARS of the Choice Freehold Queen Anne Residence 'Little Court'... to be Sold by Auction 23rd July, 1930. 9pp., 4to, stiff wraps, 3 tipped-in photographs. 1930. £15.00

  7. Cheverells Green LETTER from Stephen Read, Bridgham, to a Mr Rowed at Cheverells Green, about his son's farm and rent arrears. 1p., 4to, plus blank conjoint leaf with address panel, two postmarks, one a red circle with 'A' above the date, one black, with the word 'Harling' in a circle. Mentions 'Sir John', presumably the landlord. 1835. £12.00
    'Have now this Minuite Bought a Lurcher Bitch for you, young but have been with a Gun... her name is Smart'.


  8. Childwick, Court Baron of ADMISSION of William Rossen(?) Senior. Vellum, 4" x 12". 1" split in vellum at left edge, letters slightly rubbed at edge, and ink untidy. 1711. £16.00

  9. Gaddesden (Manor of) ABSTRACT OF THE TITLE of Mr George Lea as mortgagee to a copyhold brewery, cottages and premises at Gaddesden Row in the Parish of Great Gaddesden. 20p., folio, held with tape at corner c1860. £26.00

  10. Great and Little Munden EXTRACT FROM CONFIRMED INCLOSURE AWARD of John Nockolds, Land Surveyor. 2p., folio, in MS, relating to Great Souls field Common, Fellowsfield Common, various private carriage roads etc. With schedule. Plain wraps, folded.... together with.... PLAN on tracing paper, scale 3 chains to an inch, 'traced from Inclosure Map', showing various Great Souls field, etc. 1853. £22.00

  11. Great Northern Railway Hitchin District FIVE LITHOGRAPHED PLANS showing the line through the parishes of Arlsey, Henlow & Arlsey, Langford. Each sheet 30" x 18", linen backed. Shows the line coloured in pink and areas of land either side shaded in different colours, with owners named, each sheet representing one mile of line. Map shows buildings, roads and footpaths, streams, woodland and parkland indicated with small trees, deciduous and evergreen, certain buildings, such as White Horse Inn, Hermitage, Parsonage, named. There are manuscript additions under the name of the owners listing occupiers with acreage occupied. Sheets damped and frayed along bottom edge of first four sheets, reaching to a maximum of one inch in from the edge, on the last sheet there is an area where the paper is damaged and worn, about 3" in diameter.     These pages have been taken out of the large volume of plans, and tied at the left with a pink string.


  12. Heronsgate PARTICULARS AND CONDITIONS OF SALE of The Pines, Heronsgate... for Sale by Auction... July 28th, 1938. 13pp., 4to, printed wraps, photo tipped onto front wrap, 5 tipped-in photographs. Crease in front wrap, number in ink on wrap. 1938. £15.00

  13. Hertford FOUR LETTERS from William Cooper in Roundham, Norfolk, to Mr Bourd(?), Market Street, regarding his lease of Roundham from Sir John Sebright. Each 2-3 pages, 4to, with address panel, small wax seal and Harling postmark on verso. Refers to his expenditure on the farm, and the crops on 'Norfolk light land', 'last year my losses have been very severe, first with the crop of turnips... heavy loss of Sheep... still I have to be thankful for Sir John's former liberality and a good price for wool...'. 1836-7. £26.00
    Sir John Sebright (1767-1846) developed a breed of chicken, the Sebright, and wrote pamphlets on the process. He was cited by Charles Darwin. These letters are presumably addressed to some kind of land agent or solicitor.


  14. Hertfordshire ORDNANCE SURVEY MAP Sheet XX N.E and adjoining sheets. Scale 6" to 1 mile, size 25" x 37", linen-backed and folding into sm. 4to cloth endpapers. Contours in red. 1925. £22.00

  15. Hertfordshire RELEASE of rights in the Manor of Bibsworth Hall in Hertford, with all the messuages, houses, dovehouses, meadows, fishings, etc., in the parishes of Rampton, Withampstead, King's Walden. Geffrey Tasburgh of East Wrotham, Humfrey Groves of Covent Garden, Taylor, and Richard Nightingale servant of Geffrey Tasburgh, to Nicholas Monke of Husten in Sussex, on payment of £2000. On vellum, size 21" x 27", signatures, and presumably seals, at end cut away. Large calligraphic initial 'T'. 1656. £30.00

  16. Hitchin BOND of Mercy Collis of Hitchin widow of John Collis, Brazier, Francis Corrie, Linen Draper, to John Newman, Gent., for £100. 1p., manuscript, small folio, blank conjoint leaf. Three wax seals. Signed with large 'MC' by Mercy, and by two other parties, and witnesses. 1725. £22.00

  17. Hitchin FOR SALE BY PRIVATE TREATY Attractive Small Residential Property Codicote Lodge, Hitchin, covering in all an area of approximately 80 acres. 10pp., 4to, stiff wraps, 4 photographs in text, and photo on front wrap. 1938. £15.00

  19. Ickleford PARTICULARS OF SALE, PLAN AND VIEWS of... Ickleford Manor, Ickleford, near Hitchin... Gardens, Grounds, Cottages and Parkland, with Trout Fishing in the River Oughton... For Sale by Private Treaty. 9pp., 8vo., colour photo on front wrap, 12 small photographic views, folding plan. Price realised on front wrap. 1928. £18.00

  20. Kings Walden, Manor of SURRENDER by John Welch, one of the Customary Tenants, 'out of Court... by the rodd into the hands of the Lord of the said Mannor by the hands of Edward Catherall and Robert Jenkyn' of lands called Flexmore Field, Whiteway Close, a piece of land in Cholwell Common. The tenancy was to go to George Chalkley of Bendish in Paul's Walden, yeoman. 1p., manuscript, blank conjoint leaf with docket title. Signed by Catherall and Jenkyn, Welch, and one other, with a note of sum paid. Paper slightly darkened, some spots on conjoint leaf. 1706. £26.00

  21. Philips' CYCLISTS' MAP of the County of Hertford. Linen-backed, scale approx. 7 miles = 3". Marks in red indicate dangerous hills, 'brake on' etc. Folding into 12mo cloth boards with blue printed label. 1900. £14.00

  22. Ware Infra, Manor of SURRENDER of yard with the appurtenances in the Middle Row in Ware, Richard Gridley to Richard Dickinson. 1p, sm. folio, blank conjoint leaf. Signed and witnessed. 1778. £14.00
