Hawkins (Thomas) MANUSCRIPT HISTORY OF BRACKLEY Brackley October 1832. 68 pages in a small neat hand, in small 8vo notebook, limp calf wraps, slightly rubbed, written in 'Penny's Improved Memorandum Book', which has 8 printed pages listing Bankers, Table of Wages etc. On the first leaf is written 'This Book belongs to Thomas Hawkins Junior, Master of the Free Grammar School, Brackley, Northampton Shire. Brackley 1 October 1832', and the name Thomas Hawkins is on the front pastedown. Recounts the history of the town from the conquest onwards, presumably compiled from various written sources 'In Leland's time were several tombs of noble men and Women remaining in the presbytery of the Chapel. He hath given us a description of five...' At the end are 8 pages 'History of Northampton Shire 1730', and 3p. 'In Leland's Itinerary Vol 7 p5 I meet with this account of Brackley Hospital or College...', and a copy of a letter from Browne Willis (the 18th century antiquary) about monuments in Brackley Church, with a date of Nov. 5th, 1844. 1832. £110.00
