The journal (which is not a journal in the sense of a diary, more of a daily lesson) and 'letters' (which all begin 'Dear Sir', and are dated from 'Southampton') are written in a simple, clear language and appear to have been written as an educational tool for his children, describing and explaining a variety of subjects, such as how a watch works, coal mines, weather, the polar regions, etc., but mainly natural history, with emphasis on encouraging close observation of the natural world, as a manifestation of the Almighty. There is also much on church history, the Bible, and religious meditations on 'text of the week'. There are also occasional reference to local events and local topography: 'We have lately seen a piece of one of the piles or large posts which support the Southampton Landing Pier most extensively and curiously perforated by a small insect...' (there follows several pages on wood-boring insects); on a storm in Christchurch 'There were several trees blown down, also barns, chimneys, summer houses - the Gloucester mail was stopped several times between Southampton and Romsey & was obliged to pass through Lord Palmerston's Deer Park to get to the town... there were upwards of a hundred trees blown down on His Lordship's Estate one of which fell on a cow and killed it'; 'Muscliffe the village in which I live is rather small... there is a very pretty chapel...'
