Greenwood (C) MAP OF THE COUNTY OF YORK Made on the Basis of Triangles in the County, determined by Lieut. Coll. Wm. Mudge, Royal Arty. F.R.S. and Captn. Thos. Colby, Royal Engrs. in the Trigonometrical Survey of England, by order of the Honourable Board of Ordnance, and Surveyed in the Years 1815, 1816, & 1817, By C. Greenwood, Wakefield. Engraved by S. J. Neele & Son, 352 Strand, London. Engraved map in full bright wash colour, scale three quarters of a mile to one inch, overall size 72" x 85", divided into 12 strips, linen backed, the 6 easterly strips having 4 sections in each, and the 6 westerly parts having 5 sections in each, running horizontally across the map, each section measuring 12" x 9«". Each part with a letter on verso, and a manuscript label on one strip showing key to layout. Large calligraphic title, dedication, key to principal mountains top left, Explanation. There are many annotations in a fine red pen, I would suggest by the hand some time in the last few decades of the nineteenth century. Some villages are underlined, and figures added next to them, two numbers with a small dash between them, the last number being mostly '0', e.g. '2-0'. Some villages or hamlets which do not appear on the map have been added, for example Skinthorpe, Hathelton, Whipley, Bulford Mill, Badsley, Bowland, Wadsworth, Kearby, Hallam, with a similar number by the side. North of York 'Forest of Galtres' has been added. Some 'Wapentakes' are much more heavily annotated than others, in some areas only boundaries of hundreds have been inked in, in others areas they have been named with capital letters for example 'Poclinton Hundred'. A note in grey ink has been added near the Humber 'part of Adlingfleet... ante 1306 when Swinefleet and Redness were part of Snaith'. The sections inserted in very faded red cloth slipcase, small old repairs to edges. Inlaid on front of slip case is a calf panel with the name 'John Henry Metcalffe' and a coat of arms with three black calves and a red square. Printed label on spine. Published by the Proprietors Robinson, Son & Holdsworth, Leeds, John Hurst & C. Greenwood, Wakefield, June 4th 1817. £650.00
¶ This map was possibly used by someone to prepare another map. The ink annotations are not too obtrusive on the bright colouring of the map.
