  1. Ackland (J), Printer RULES FOR THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE "ELTON" CHARITY IN THE PARISH OF NEMPNETT. October, 1862. Single sheet listing seven rules concerning eligibility, distribution, etc., size approx. 11" x 8". Traces of vertical fold. J. Ackland, Printer and Bookbinder, Dolphin Street, Bristol: 1862. £15.00

  2. Banwell POSTCARD showing The Castle, Banwell. Coloured view, with cart and some children in front of the gateway. Used, with Banwell postmark. 1909. £4.00

  3. Barrett (John), topographer LETTER to John Winter at Loxton, dated Somerston 15th Jany. 1851. 6 lines on 1p 4to, paper rather creased, with 1" split at one fold. On verso is address panel, penny red stamp, and small black wax seal. Small piece missing from right margin where seal broken. Barrett says he has forwarded Winter's last communication to North Curry, and that he cannot meet him on Friday as he is confined to bed with ill health. 1851. £8.00
    Hunt's Directory of 1851 lists a John Barrett, Solicitor, at Somerton.


  4. Bath Abbey WEST VIEW OF BATH ABBEY CHURCH. Monochrome watercolour drawing. On paper, size 7" x 5", a fine very detailed drawing, titled as above in the lower margin. On the lower corner is written 'Britton's B.A.C'. This drawing would seem to be taken from a plate in John Britton's 'Bath Abbey Church', (the figures in the doorway are the same) but whereas the engraving shows the rest of the Abbey this shows only the front. n.d. c1830? £18.00

  6. Bath SUBSCRIPTIONS AND DONATIONS BOOK For the Society for Preserving to the Public the Right of Ancient Footpaths. R. Hare, E. Saunders, Secretaries. Manuscript recording names and amounts for subscribers 1843-1870. 38p., sm. 8vo, parchment boards, worn, chipped morocco label with gilt title. There are also two minutes of meetings noting change of collector, signed R. Wilbraham Falconer (the author of works on the Bath Mineral Waters). 1843-70. £90.00
    Pasted inside front board is a printed letter stating the Society would like a subscription from each household 'the health and pleasure of the Inhabitants of Bath being so dependent upon the Footways that afford accommodation to pedestrians in reaching the various delightful situations around the City.' Among the subscribers are: R. Tite, C. Milsom, Rev. Bartram, T. Jolly, S. Rutter, J. Pulteney, Lady Hargood, Holloway & Son.


  7. Bath WARRANT OF ATTORNEY to Confess a Judgement, to William Dyne and Richard Messiter, Attorneys, to appear for John Cattermoule of Bath, Yeoman, in an action of Debt on Bond for the sum of £198, at the suit of Martin Moger. 1p., sm. folio, printed with manuscript inserts. Fine wax seal with bust. Folds, blank conjoint leaf with docket title on verso. 1793. £20.00

  8. Bath, Chippenham, Bradford on Avon FOUR POSTERS of Coward, James & Co., each offering different properties for sale by auction. Posters printed in red and brown, size 32" x 21". Sales were at the Oak Room, Fortts' Restaurant. July 1973. £18.00
    Properties were: Cedar Bungalow, Camden; Coniston, Newbridge Road; Cottage at Huntingdon St., Bradford; Homestead Farmhouse, Mountain Bower, Chippenham.


  9. Bathwick and Chew Magna COPY WILL of William Abraham of Bathwick, Banker, 1803. 6p., small folio, sewn at edge, folded with docket title. Copy. Paper of will watermarked 1814. £16.00
    Bequeathes his house in Bathwick, held under Lady Bath, property in Chew Magna, house at 6 Caroline Buildings in Lyncombe & Widcombe, money for bread for 'the second poor' of Chew Magna, shares in Sydney Gardens, money to the Bath Dispensary and Infirmary. The house at Chew Magna was called 'Fosters House'.

  25. Braddon (Paul), artist BYGONE CHARD as it appeared in 1740. Watercolour, size 19.5cm x 27.5cm, pasted onto a large thick card. Signed and titled by Braddon, in pencil, on the back of the card. A charming scene with the Guildhall at the centre, with weather vane and clock, gabled buildings either side, In the the foreground is a village pump with 2 women collecting water, there are several other figures, as well as a covered cart. Some spotting to the card. n.d. c1910? £35.00
    Paul Braddon, was the pseudonym of James Leslie Crees, who was born in Birmingham in 1864. He started by doing mainly architectural drawings of continental churches and cathedrals. Eventually he turned to watercolour, and his London agent sold them mainly in the United States. He died in 1938.


  26. Braddon (Paul), artist GEORGE INN, NORTON ST PHILIP. Watercolour, size 19cm x 27cm, pasted onto a large thick card, titled, in pencil on the front and back of the card, and initialled PB at bottom corner of view. Braddon has signed the back of the card with pencil. The scene depicts the inn (filling most of the paper) with several people in the foreground, as well as a covered cart. Some spotting to the card, not affecting watercolour. n.d. c1910? £35.00

There is a slightly different title, and signature of Braddon, in pencil, on the back of the card. The scene depicts a narrow walk-way on which are 2 women and a man, with buildings on either side and a chapel at the end of the street. Some spotting to the card. n.d. c1910. £38.00

A lively scene depicting the cross, surrounding buildings, St. Peter and St. Paul church in the background, several people in the foreground, including flower sellers, as well as a covered carts, and busy stalls with customers. Watercolour, size 27.5cm x 19cm, pasted onto a large thick card, titled, as above, in pencil on the front and back of the card, It is also signed by Braddon, in pencil, on the back of the card. It depicts the stone walls of the refectory, a large window, and part of the fireplace. There is a chair and a man standing holding a walking stick. Some spotting to the card. n.d. c1910. £35.00

  33. Bridgwater TO THE WORTHY AND INDEPENDENT ELECTORS of The Borough of Bridgwater... Broadside in which Vere Poulett comments on the recent decision of Select Committee of the House of Commons, referring to the Polls of 1806 and 1807, thanking people for their support and conveying his readiness to represent them in Parliament in future. Size 10" x 8", 24 lines, pasted to card, with inscription in ink below 'Presented to the Club by Mr Henry Harding in memory of his father... 4th December 1893'.   37. Charlinch FINE relating to two messuages and land at Edington Burtle in Charlinch, between William Perkins and John Pearce. Vellum, size 9" x 16", printed with manuscript inserts. 1821. £12.00

  38. Cheddar COX'S STALACTITE CAVERN At the Foot of Cheddar Cliffs, Somersetshire. Mr. Cox Invites the attention of the Nobility and Gentry, to this Cavern... one of the most wonderful Productions of Nature, yet discovered.... Handbill, size 11" x 9", backed with stiff paper. Large heading in a variety of type-faces, and 17 lines of text describing the 'grotesque and fanciful' formations, such as a Hindoo Temple, a Mummy etc. At the end mentions his 'Pleasure Gardens' opposite a sheet of water 'as clear as Crystal'.   46. Exford, Withypool etc. FIVE ORDNANCE SURVEY MAPS scale 6" to 1 mile. Each size 18" x 12", plus margins. Comprises: Sheet XIV S.E (Exford). Water features hand coloured, one field outlined in blue crayon; LVII N.E (Exton); LVII N.W (Winsford); LVII S.E (Brompton Regis); LVIII S.W (Yellands). A few small edge tears in Exford map.   48. Frome COUNTERPART LEASE of a cottage in a close called Mill Close, Daniel Yerbury to Richard Prater of Whitchurch. Vellum, 12" x 20", signed by Prater with wax seal. Ink slightly faded but legible. 1743. £14.00
    Gives the names and occupations of occupiers of the adjoining premises, including clothworker, saddler. Prater was to pitch and pave part of the road by the cottage.


  49. Gibbs (S), Published by A NEW AND CORRECT PLAN of the City of Bath. Engraved plan, on thick paper, size 10" x 11", plus margins. Scale 1" = 100 yds. Border, decorative title, scale bar, compass rose, and Reference to 19 buildings. Covers Royal Victoria Park, Sydney Gardens, Mount Beacon, Prior Park Buildings. Published by S. Gibbs, 3 Union Street, Bath. n.d. c1830. £85.00
    Gibbs published numerous guidebooks to Bath, but this plan does not appear to have been folded or inserted in a book.


  50.   51. Ham Green, Portbury LEASE FOR A YEAR of a house, lands and orchard at Ham Green, Miles Ariel, Broker and Elizabeth his wife, and Samuel Hicks Withers, to Philip John Miles, of Leigh Court, Abbots Leigh. Vellum, size 21" x 27". Signed by 3 lessors with wax seals, Schedule at the bottom of the sheet listing house, orchard, copse, withy bed, cottage, piece of land described as 'at Portbury Wharf', etc. with 'Quality', 'Quantity'.   56. Hardington Mandeville MAP OF THE PARISH OF HARDINGTON MANDEVILLE in the County of Somerset. 1843. Tracing of the tithe map in ink and some colour on tracing paper, size 55" x 36". Very neat tracing, with names and number for each field, woodland shown by small trees, roads shaded in red, etc. no date. Probably circa 1950. £45.00

    Concerns Elizabeth's share of a messuage at South Brent, 'The Swan Tenement' in Ilminster. Mentions items of clothing 'my linen Gown and two petty Coats one being blue cloth serge with a silver lace..... my scarlet Cloth Coat I give to my sons to make them Waistcoats....'


  63. Ilton ASSIGNMENT of land in Ilton called Floods Stoverd, Isaac Standerwick of Westhambrook in Huish Episcopi, Lincloth maker and James Crabb of Ashull, yeoman. Vellum, size 19" x 29", 2 wax seals. Some damp spotting in one area, ink slightly faded. 1771. £8.00

Left margins trimmed away. 3 neat red circles have been drawn at a quarter, half and three-quarter mile radii from Keynsham church, and public houses have been coloured red or blue, and neatly named in ink.   73. Moss Flower (T.J) PORTISHEAD SEWERAGE SCHEME Contract No. 1. Outfall details. Engineering drawing in ink and full colour on Whatman paper backed with linen, size 24" x 43". Scale 1" to 1 foot. Delicately coloured in shades of blue and brown, with great detail of each bolt etc. Shows large side elevation with piles, and four other sections and plans. Some creasing of paper at centre.     The bridge was rebuilt in the late 18th century by William Armstrong of Bristol.

  83. Somerton SOMERTON THE MAIN SQUARE, With Market Cross. Watercolour 10" x 14", on paper pasted onto card, showing a view across part of the square looking towards the church of St. Michaels and All Angels. The Market Cross is partly hidden with an early building which is still in the square, as is a building on the right of the picture and the building on the far side of the square. On verso is a good sepia watercolour of an Italian scene with a Roman arch. late 19th century. £20.00

Playbill on thin paper, size 15" x 10", some slight wear at one point where once folded vertically, reinforced on verso with tape. Some light browning at two points. Details 7 Acts, commencing with the 'Fascinating Pas de Fleurs'. There were three short plays between the different dances. Keenes, Printer, Bath. 1845. £40.00
    The young Queen Victoria sketched the dancers at a London performance. On the 18th November there was a variety benefit for Mrs Macready, the Lessee.
