Smith started life in the navy, and later studied to become a Baptist minister in Devonport. The Rev. G.C. Smith was a pastor of the Baptist chapel in Penzance from 1807-25, and 1848-63. Whilst there he preached not only in Penzance, but also at St. Just and Newlyn, and built six chapels in the Penzance area. He founded several societies and charities mainly for the benefit of sailors and their families.
