  1. Reading PROBATE of the will of John Dudman, gent., of Reading, late of Sackville Street, Piccadilly. Two large vellum sheets, manuscript, with Certificate of Administration, printed with manuscript inserts, attached, large papered seal. Brown stain approx. 2" x 2" affecting two sheets, verso where titled rather spotty. 1823. £18.00
    Leaves large amounts of Bank of England stock, annuities etc. to different people, and his tea chest, silver spoons, Bible.

  6. Sturge & Co. TOBACCO WAREHOUSE Surveyor's report signed by Y. & J.P. Sturge (on the instructions of the Surveyor of City Lands) on the suitability of a Tobacco Warehouse in Back Street for conversion to a `Mart for the sale of Leather'.   7. Voss Bark (Conrad), Photographer PHOTOGRAPH of a large group of over a hundred boys in naval uniforms on a sailing ship, some seated, some in the rigging. Albumen print, size 4" x 7", mounted on card, outlined in red, 'C. Voss Bark, Clifton' printed below. Card edges with browning (not affecting photograph). At the left hand side is a small group of ladies. The boys ages seem to be about 10-16, and the ship was possibly a training establishment. c1885. £20.00

  18. Grade TITHE APPORTIONMENT of the Parish of Grade in the County of Cornwall. 1843. 13pp, folio, plus 2p introduction. Printed in columns for Landowner, Occupiers, No. on Plan, Description of Lands, Cultivation, Rent Charge apportioned. Pages dog-eared and dusty at top right corner, lacks back wrap, printed label on front wrap, which is stained. Helston, 1843. £50.00

  19. Gulval PLAN OF PART OF THE PARISH OF GULVAL Scale 6 chains = 1 inch. By Thomas Mathews, Surveyor. Manuscript plan in ink and three colours, size 26" x 32", dissected and mounted on linen, folding to 14" x 8". Shows Chyandour, Trescrowan, Ponjou, Polkinghorne, Garras, etc, with buildings, roads, streams, shoreline. Many small fields, all numbered, large number in the south coloured brown - later note by reference simply states 'Brown - potatoes'. Ink smudge near scale bar, some foxing, some dust-staining at bottom of map. A few ink amendments giving acreage of fields. Signed and dated by Matthews bottom right. 21st October, 1872. £170.00

  20. Gunwalloe PARISH OF GUNWALLOE sketch map. Basic plan in red and black ink, on paper size 16" x 16", folds, showing river, roads to Helston and Mullion, bridge, 'proposed sanding road' and 'proposed footpath', farm house, church. Field belonging to J.J. Rogers outlined in red. Line with numbers along river, with reference key giving distance between these numbers 'No. 1 to 2. 4 Chains. Moorstone posts and batten rails.... 4 to 5. 8 chains. dry stone fence on bank of river...' 17th November 1866. £22.00

  21. Hart (Claude M) THE CORNISH RIVIERA and Isles of Scilly. Large format album, size 9«" x 12", with 16 tipped-in watercolour views by Hart, plus a large view tipped onto front wrap, decorative border. All but one of the views 3«" x 9", the other 6«" x 10". Printed in green on greyish thick paper. Thick card wraps with mounted illustration, descriptive text on page facing views. Foreward by Herbert Thomas. c1920. £45.00

  28. Mawgan in Meneage LEASE two messuages and 37 acres, part of Killianker, known as Roskymer Cutter, G.L. Bassett of Tehidy Park to Elisha Aver. Printed on three pages, folio, sewn at edge, with details in manuscript. With double-page sketch plan in ink on waxed cotton sewn in, with schedule giving acreage of fields numbered on plan 1883. £15.00

  29. Penzance Harbour ORDNANCE SURVEY MAP Sheet LXXIV.2. Scale 25" to 1 mile. Size 25" x 36", folded in four. Small area of wall near mouth of Chyandour Brook shaded pink, with lettering A-B and C-D, and paper with two sections of the rocks and wall below railway line, scale 10 ft to an inch, pasted in blank sea area. Revision of 1936. £25.00
    Covers area from Graving Dock to rail platforms east of Chyandour, north as far as Chyanhall.


  30. Peters (J.P.) THE YEOMAN'S CLUB To Support Freedom of Election & Constitutional Protection. Broadside, size 12" x 8", putting forward a proposal for funding a sum by subscription in every Parish, the collection to be continued until œ20,000 is amassed, the interest of this sum to be applied 'against oppressive Law, when the spirit of darkness has a too powerful ascendancy', any excess being given to Charity. 'This plan is humbly submitted to the Yeomanry of Cornwall by their friend and Brother J.P. Peters. January 21, 1825.' E. Heard, Printer, Truro. 1825. £36.00

Shows buildings, field outlines, woodland, each field numbered. Two fields are outlined in colours. Adjacent is a sketch plan 'Ludgvan Glebe Lands exchanged', showing basic field outlines. n.d. 1880? £14.00

  32. Sithney PLAN of of Several Plots of Ground Lying Contiguous to the Boundary line between Canon Rogers lands in Bosoar and lands of John Buller, at Longstone Down. Manuscript plan in ink and colour, size 25" x 10", scale 99ft. to 1", showing bound stones, small strips of land, reference table with distances between named points in links, one for Rogers and one for Buller... with... PLAN of proposed New Hedge to enclose Site of old Cottages at Sithney Common. Basic printed plan on large folio sheet, hand shading, names seem to have been printed with rubber stamp kit. 2 items. c1850 & 1902. £34.00

  33. St. Ives ORDNANCE SURVEY MAP Sheet LXI.12 Scale 25" to 1 mile. Covers St. Ives, as far inland as Wesley Place. Two thirds of the map is sea area. Some reinforcing of margins with new paper where paper torn from margins... together with Sheet LXI.16. Carbis Bay. Some annotations near Hawks point relative to a new road... together with Sheet LXI.11. Porthmeor Beach, Trowan, Zawn Quoits. Ink blotch at Carrick Du Terrace. 3 items. 1908. £34.00

  34. St. Ives SPECIAL EDITION OF THE CORNISH TELEGRAPH The Presentation of St. Ives, Mr. Pendarves before the Electors. Newsprint, in three columns, heading in large typeface. Size 29" x 13", 10" long horizontal tear repaired with archival tape. Reports on a meeting in the Town Hall, St. Ives, with introduction of Pendarves by the Chairman, and Pendarves long speech. Printed at the Cornish Telegraph Office, April 1st, 1881. £20.00
    Pendarves condemns over-interference in foreign affairs of the previous government, loss of life and expense of Afghan War. Also mentions the Boers of South Africa, plans for the Harbour at St. Ives.


  35. St. Keverne DEMISE of the tithes and tenths of hay, corn and grain belonging to the Rectory of St. Keverne, arising from a part of a tenement called Trevivian, Richard Hele of Fleet Damerell, Devon, to John Reskilly, yeoman, of St. Keverne. Printed on vellum, 41 lines, with manuscript inserts, size 13" x 14", signed by Reskilly with small wax seal. Large heading with attractive initial letter. 1706. £40.00
    Three 'lives' with their ages listed on verso. Symons' 'Gazeteer of Cornwall' lists Trevivian as a farm of 120 acres in St. Keverne.


  36. Symons (Robt.) & Sons, Surveyors, Truro MAP OF CAMBORNE, ILLOGAN, REDRUTH AND GWENNAP MINES Scale 15 chains to one inch. Size 27" x 43", newly rebacked with linen, dissected, folded and mounted in recent cloth-covered boards, size 11" x 16", with printed label on front board. Explanation, scale bars of Chains and Fathoms. Areas of different mines outlined in various colours. Shows lodes, Cross courses, Elvans, shafts, Sett Boundaries, account houses, depth of mine from surface. A few small rust spots along top edge. Lithographed by Brenton Symons, Truro (1870). £400.00

  37. Tuckingmill, Camborne BICKFORD CENTENARY. 21 letters to and from William Thomas regarding the form and organisation of proposed celebrations for the centenary of the discovery of the safety fuse. Original letters from correspondents, with copies of Thomas's letters to them. Includes letters from Mr. Bickford-Smith at Tuckingmill; Wm. Cullen (offering to write articles for The Times or Nature, to issue invitations, to help Thomas with background for a paper 'what I mean by the background is the necessity in a paper of this sort to visualize the conditions which obtained in Cornwall.... it was then an isolated community, very much self-contained as to its ideas but full of resourceful men'); Harry Rich; Joe Thomas, his brother, on South Crofty notepaper; letter from Thomas to Pellew-Harvey at Institution of Mining & Metallurgy etc. Most letters one or two pages, 4to, some typewritten. Each letter filed in plastic pocket, together with a typewritten transcript of an article On Bickford by William Cullen from 'The Journal of Chemical Industry' 1931. May and June, 1931. £95.00
    'on June 25th and 26th Bickford Smiths celebrate the centenary of the discovery of the safety Fuse and they proposed making it a purely domestic function... I have told them it is not only a Cornish matter but a world matter... it is of the same order as the Davey Safety lamp... and has probably saved thousands of lives'. Bickford invented a safer kind of fuse for use in the mines. Sadly he died just before the factory making the fuse was opened.


  38. (Wallis, John) OUTLINE OR SKELETON MAPS OF THE DIOCESE OF EXETER Part 1. Containing in Thirteen Plates The Archdeaconry and County of Cornwall in which the Boundarie of all the Deaneries, Hundred, Subdivisions of Hundreds, and Parishes, are accurately described. With Title, 'List of Maps', 'Explanation' and 13 lithographed maps. Printed on rectos only, 4to. Bound in original plain paper wraps, loosely inserted in recent grey paper boards, cloth spine. Printed title on front board. Bodmin. Lithographed by Liddell and Son 1825. £85.00
    The Cornish section was the only part to be published. The maps were 'reduced by Bennett Pascoe, land surveyor, from the outline prepared by John Wallis in 1815 from T. Martyn's large map' (Boase and Courtney; Bibliotheca Cornubiensis).

  41. Bampton, Honiton ORDNANCE SURVEY MAP Sheet XXI. Scale 1" to 1 mile. Size 24" x 36", mounted on linen, folding into small 4to marbled wraps. Fully coloured with counties shaded in wash, boundaries in a brighter wash. Main roads, railways, parkland coloured. Electrotyped in 1876. £68.00
    Also covers part of Somerset and small part of Dorset.


  42. Bishops Tawton COUNTERPART OF LEASE of Whiteamoors, a tenement containing 24 acres, for ninety nine years. George Barber to William Joyce. Vellum, size 23" x 30", good wax seal with a bird. 1814. £17.00
    Gives amounts of fine, rent, heriot, best beast.


  43. Chittlehampton MORTGAGE of messuage called Hawkeridge, with Hawkeridge Wood and other lands, in Chittlehampton, with various other cottages, etc. in Goodleigh and Swymbridge, Malett Hals to Charles Davie and Robert Furledon. Vellum, size 20" x 29", hole in vellum with loss of about four words, another small hole with loss of half a word. Wax seal. 1731. £28.00
    The original mortgage was by Baldwin Hals and John Honycombe.


  44. Dartmoor ORDNANCE SURVEY MAP Sheet XXV. Scale 1" to 1 mile, dissected and mounted on linen, size 24" x 36", folding into 8vo green endpapers. Parkland, county boundaries, main roads and railway hand coloured. Inserted in full green morocco slip case with tuck-in flap, rubbed at corners. Electrotyped in 1873. £65.00

  45. Exeter THE RADICAL DEFEAT and Postponement of the Dignity of 'Scarlet'. A la Macaulay. Satirical poem in 8 stanzas by 'Hookem Snivey', single sheet, printed on one side, 4to, folded, some repaired edge tears at folds. Exon. November 2, 1859. £18.00
    Based on 'How Horatius Held the Bridge'. Refers to someone called 'Latty' or 'Lat Leveller of Fore-street hill' who wanted to be the Liberal Mayor of Exeter. 'To win that seat, my trusty band/You must not scrup'lous be/But beer and bunkum freely use/All stuff 'bount bribery!'


  46. Hartland ABSTRACT OF TITLE to William Rowe's tenements of Wellisford, Bursdon and Diptford. 6p., small folio. On the last page is a letter (in a different hand) to Richard Stevens at Winscott, from J. Whitlocke (presumably a lawyer), 7th Jan. 1741, saying he is sending the abstract with a deed of ejectment, and that he is glad Stevens has got rid of his swollen face. Integral address panel on verso, marked 'Free. Richard Syster', broken wax seal, indistinct circular postmark. 1741. £18.00
    The tenement included a messuage and many acres of meadow, pasture, furze and heath. Details title from 1693.


  47. Hartland BOND Edward Wolferstan of Hartland bound to William Tanner of Collumpton for the sum of œ300. Printed sheet, blank adjoining leaf, small folio with details in MS, signed by Wolferstan and two witnesses, with seal. Some browning due to damp. 26th Mar. 1787. £20.00

  48. Ilfracombe ABSTRACT OF THREE LEASES of 1897, 1898, 1899, of a farmhouse and lands called Comyn Farm in Ilfracombe, Walter Raleigh Gilbert to George Brown of Barnstaple. 6p., folio, folded. With Schedules. 1899. £8.00

Manuscript note, 9 lines, 8vo, signed by a Justice, Richard Bawden. The conjoint leaf has been used for the address to send to the Steward of Bishops Tawton Manor, Philip Sydenham, at Barnstaple. Many names have no entry. Names seem to be field, house names etc., from the Glastonbury area, examples include 'Culver Close: There is a Culver Croft near the Grange farm being the enclosure where the priory pigeon house stood, from Culver a pigeon.     The top view shows the works with a Regency facade, a pavement in front with elegant figures strolling and talking in doorway, the smoking cone behind, open countryside on the left with a house among trees in the distance. The lower view shows the canal in the foreground with barges and horse towing, the cone and works, with smoking chimneys, on the opposite bank, with figures working unloading barges. The two views present an interesting contrast.

  177. Llangollen PHOTOGRAPH of Plas Newydd, Llangollen. Size approx. 6" x 10", titled in white in plate. Mounted on stiff card album leaf. On verso is a close-up view, 9" x 7", of the porch at Plas Newydd... together with two photographs of the 'Ladies of Llangollen', from engravings, one showing them both seated at a desk, the other of them by a fountain, wearing top hats, plus another view from an engraving of one of the ladies with a bunch of keys.   192. Presentation to the Pope LETTER to Mrs Stevens, 10 S. Bastianello, Rome, from (Miss?) Grant, English College, March 14th 1846 explaining the protocol, dress, etc. for their forthcoming audience with the Pope. 1p, 8vo, 13 lines... together with... a note dated 13th February from Mr Kestner saying the presentation to the Pope for which he has already sent the list is only for gentlemen, and he has had to put off the one for ladies, and enquiring about names, etc. 3p, small 8vo. 1846. £16.00
    'Will you have the goodness to meet me at the place where the Swiss Guard is stationed (above the Colonnade)... the dress required must be of full black, with a veil... the ceremonial is to kneel on one knee at the door... and then at the Pope's feet...'
