  1. Greenwood (C) & (J) MAP OF THE COUNTY OF BERKS, from An Actual Survey made in the Years 1822 & 1823. Hand-coloured engraved map, size approx. 23" x 27", with a vignette view of Windsor Castle. Decorative title, Reference to the Hundreds, Explanation Table, small inset map of detached area of the county. Linen-backed, paper rather dusty, with some staining in bottom margin, line of rust spots just below top border, some rust spots in blank area at bottom of map and in Explanation table, tears in top right hand corner, reaching about 1" beyond border, stuck down on to linen.     Includes articles on the Bristolian Bread Association, 'A Peep at the House of Lords', in which he lists earnings of local notables such as Lord Bath, Bishop of Bath & Wells etc.

    The Berkeley Testimonial was 'subscribed for by 14,000 of the working classes' as a tribute to his work on licensing law reform.

  8. Britton (J) A.L.S. from John Britton to Mr W. Strong, informing him that his essay on the Architecture of Redcliffe Church is being printed by the Churchwardens, who are preparing a large public meeting "to take active measure to promote a subscription & begin their restoration." He complains that he has had no reply from Mr Foster to whom he had sent his "Toddn. Vol." and "Mr Braikenridge has also cut me. Alas. I am deserted..." He also mentions his work on Windsor Castle and his description of Richmond. "The account of my native parish is also nearly ready for the Wiltshire Topographical Socy." 3 sides small 8vo, slightly foxed. Oct. 14th 1842. £24.00

  10. Mills and Son, Printers THE MAGISTRATES most earnestly intreat the assistance of their Fellow-Citizens to restore the Peace of the City, by assembling IMMEDIATELY at the GUILD-HALL. Handbill, printed in large type-face, size 6" x 7", pasted to album leaf. Date October 30th 1831 written in ink at bottom. Guildhall, Sunday Morning, Half-Past Ten o'clock (Oct. 30th, 1831) £75.00
    See Latimer's 'Annals of Bristol': 'The mayor and some of the aldermen had assembled early at the Guildhall.... about eleven o'clock the mayor issued a placard stating that Sir Charles Wetherell had left the city, and another announcing that the Riot Act had been read. Handbills were also sent to the churches and chapels, describing the perilous state of affairs, and earnestly calling upon the citizens to support the Mayor in maintaining order'. Only about 200 people answered the appeal.

  13. St Pauls ARCHITECTURAL DRAWING AND PLANS 3 plans, folio, one showing plots of land in City Road, and a coloured elevation of house in City Road, another showing land in Seymour Road opposite Maules' Nursery, and one showing three plots near Baptist Mills, Sand Pits and The Moors. Lithographed with hand colouring, on three sheets of blue paper 17" x 13". Paper watermarked 1863. £24.00

  14. Wine Merchant's LETTER BOOK of James Evens, of the firm Evens & Sons, Bridge Street, 1880 - 1920, and E.D. Evens, 1928. 280 pages of copies on flimsy paper, mainly handwritten, a few typed, plus many pages of blanks. The letters mainly concern the division of capital between the family, and ensuing arguments: James Evens writes of his older brother "his advice was to decline the offer and go out to Cognac and lay everything before Mr Martell". Some letters refer to accounts of "The Valley Water Mills Colour Co." 4to, rubbed boards and worn morocco spine, a few sheets cut out, some copies rather feint. Indelible ownership stamp inside front board, a few ballpoint notes re. the company on first page. 1880-1928. £50.00

  16. Clifton Suspension Bridge AN ACT to amend the Acts for building a Bridge over the River Avon, from Clifton to the opposite Side of the River in the County of Somerset. 3pp, disbound. 1845. £11.00

  17. Hospitals and Workhouses AN ACT for rendering more effectual the several Acts passed for the erecting of Hospitals and Workhouses within the City of Bristol, for the Better employing and maintaining of the Poor thereof. Black Letter, 12pp and cover leaf. 1745. £15.00

    Concerns his wish that his nephew the Revd. John Basset Collins should be presented to the Rectory of Camborne.

  27. Bodmin House of Correction FORM OF COMMITMENT of Martha Caddey to House of Correction for 12 mths. for havg. had Bastards. Manuscript, docket title as above. 1p, sm. folio, ordering the Constables of Helston to convey Martha Caddy to the Bodmin House of Correction 'to set on work during the Term of Twelve Months', as she had 'a female Bastard Child... chargeable to the sd. Boro.', having previously had another bastard child, since dead, the previous June. 5th Sept. 1820. £36.00
    Not signed or sealed by John Borlase and John Tevenen, the Justices: probably a copy kept for reference.


  28. Calvadnack Mine REPORT November 5th, 1863. 4pp., 4to, with form requesting payment of call loosely inserted... together with brief letter of 1853, referring to dues from Calvadnack Mine. 1863. £32.00

  29. Camborne ASSIGNMENT of a cottage lately built by John Gribbell with one acre adjoining parcel of Carne-entral in the parish of Camborne with liberty of a road for carrying turf, John Gribbell, Miner, to William Oats, of Redruth, Ore Dresser. Large vellum sheet, wax seal. 1827. £15.00

    ST. MINVER CHURCH BELLS

  30. Church Bells, St. Minver GRANT and Licence by the Bishop of Exeter enabling the Minister and Churchwardens of St. Minver to sell the four bells of the North and South Lowland churches in the parish, which churches are in ruinous condition, in order that the money raised from the sale may go towards the repairs. Signed by Nicholas Geare, Register of the Consistory Court. Paper, size 13" x 13", fine papered seal of Bishopric of Exeter top left, impressed tax stamps bottom right, small repaired edge tear. In a fine bold hand. 1777. £45.00
    '... the Two Bells in each of the said last mentioned Churches (are) broken and unhung and have not been used for many years last past'


  31. Constantine LICENCE of Josiah Mayne of Flushing to Christopher Rowe of Tresprison to search and work for Copper, Copper Ore, Tin and other Metals in the tenement of Bufton. 2 pages folio, plus cover leaf with docket title. 1864. £36.00

  32. Cornwall Mines Supply Company Ltd. FIRST ISSUE OF 1,600 SHARES Capital £10,000, in 2,000 Shares of £5 Each. Prospectus, 3pp., sm. folio, folded with docket title, loosely inserted is form for share application. 1891. £26.00
    They proposed to buy Davey's Rope and Brush Factory in Camborne, and the Stores near the ropewalk at Pengegon. The Business was to manufacture mining and shipping ropes, brushes, buddle sweeps etc., to sell 'iron, steel, grease, candles and tallow, and all kinds of mining materials...'


  33. Great Wheal Fortune Mining Co. PEREMPTORY ORDER to Cornish & Borlase, made in the Stannary Court, in the Matter of the Companies' Act and of the Great Wheal Fortune Mining Company, for payment of Arrears of Calls. 2p., folio, plus docket title. Two schedules on second page, one listing approx. 50 Contributories. 1871. £24.00
    Unstamped copy. Concerned the will of James Angove and George Fowle.

    SETT OF TOLGULLOW

  34. Gwennap COUNTERPART OF SETT of Tolgullow Hill and Tolgullow Rogers, distribution 1/12th, Peter Hill of Carwythenack to John Williams of Scorrier House. 2 vellum sheets, size 24" x 28", wax seal. 1818. £60.00
    Details the various stones which marked the limits. The land was bounded on the south by the limits of the mine called 'Coffanola'. Among other things Williams had to undertake to 'continue to drive the deep Adit which is now in working... and to continue every drift or drifts and adit and adits level and levels that may be beneficial....'


  35. Gwennap COUNTERPART SETT IN TOLGULLA MOOR Arthur Horldsworth of Dartmouth to James Mitchell of Redruth. Granting 'Free Liberty.... to Dig Delve work mine search for and bring to grass all copper copper ore lead lead ore..... tin and tin stuff in part of Tollgulla Moor... so far North as the stones set up by Captain Richard Williams near the main leat....' 60 lines on vellum, size 26" x 31", wax seal. 1768. £65.00

  36. Helston THE ORDER of two of his Majesty's Justices... concerning a Male bastard Child, lately born... of the Body of Bridget Perrow... 1p., folio, 54 printed lines with ms inserts. Orders Benjamin Polglase of Breage, Labourer, the reputed father, to pay towards her lying-in and maintenance to the time of the Order. 1813. £45.00
    The Order, with 2 small papered seals, is unsigned, and the amount of contribution not filled in.


  37. Helston THE VOLUNTARY DEPOSITION and Examination of Ann Ching, Single-woman... who saith that she is big with a Base Child.... likely to be Chargeable to the said Borough and that William Chenowden.... Footman to Peter Hill Esq., is the Father of such Child or Children. 1p, folio, printed with ms inserts. Signed with mark of Ann Ching, and by Mayor. 1797. £38.00
    On verso below docket title is note of recognizance entered into by putative father.


  38. Helston, Borough of PETITION of Thomas Freeman, Prisoner in the Prison of the said Borough... to Charles Pennock Mayor of the Bourough...' 1p, folio, signed by Freeman, praying that George Johns, who he is indebted to in a case of trespass, be brought before the court, Freeman being minded 'to deliver up all his real and personall Estate...', on verso is assignment of his estate, signed. Attached are 3 pages listing all Freeman's debts (mostly recorded with name and expenses, but some recording cyder, rum, 'To Doctor Thomas Wills for phisick' etc.) and money owed to him ('John Daws of Marazion for glass sold to him')... together with 'Rule' signed by Pennock, notice of service of summons and another sheet detailing case. April 1743. £35.00

Gives Borough of Helston Conventionary Rents, High Rents, Rack Rents; Manor of Carwythenack, Conventionary Rents, ruled in columns over double page spreads for Tenant, Tenement, Yearly Rent, Arrears, Due at Michaelmas etc. 40 double-page spreads. 1789-1796. £200.00
    Penhellick House in Coinage Hall Stret, Cellars and Loft at Cadgwith, Luddra Mill Tenement, Gweek Wollas, A Moor in Trengilly, Tamlyn's tenement in Gweek Wartha & Melting House, Kestle Down, Mellanoweth Mill etc.


  40. Helston, Truro, St. Austell ORDNANCE SURVEY MAP Sheet No XXXI. Scale 1" to 1 mile, size approx. 25" x 36". Waterstaining up to 4" into map along bottom edge. O.S. embossed stamp 1864. £25.00

  41. Illogan AN ACCOUNT OF TITHE FOR THE YEAR 1774 4to notebook, rough plain paper wraps, 23 pages in manuscript, in an untidy hand, with eccentric spelling, listing tenement holders and place, with the cows, geese, lambs, acreage of barley, oats etc., with value in column on right. 1774. £120.00
    For example 'Mr John Hichens Rents Cetoden (?) of Mr John Hockin and he gives £7 a year for it and his time begun to Junuary the 1st 1774 and have upon it 1 acer and Quarter of Barley and 1 of heay and 1 Cow... £0.2s.0d. Tithe heay £0.4s.0d.'... 'Littel Nancekuke. Mr Browns have 41 Lambs.. £0.8s.0d, 10 fleeces.... £0.6s.0d, 4 Cows... £0.8s.0d, 8 gees... £0.1s.0d and have 6 young bulicks and have 9 aceres of Weat and 6 of Barley and 3 of oats and 7 aceres of heay'.


  42. Kea COUNTERPART SETT of ground in the parish of Kea, William Hill of Carwythenack to John Williams of Scorrier House. Two large vellum sheets, wax seal. Gives limits of the Sett (which was near Nicholas Bayley's new Stamping Mills), details of right to 'erect any Engines.... sink any shafts....' etc., and of William Hill's dues. 1819. £45.00

  43. Kea GENERAL RELEASE Mr Thos. Reed and others, Adventurers in Wheal Tregothnan Mine to Henry Rosewarne and others Adventurers in Baldew Mine. Single sheet of paper, folded, size 17" x 13", signed by 8 parties with small wax seals. 1779. £35.00
    Refers to a boundary dispute between two sets of adventurers in contiguous mines, which was settled by John Vivian and John Edwards, Arbitrators. There is a long list of Adventurers.


  44. Kenwyn OBLIGATION BOND of John Tippett of Kenwyn to Stephen Roberts of St. Agnes. 1p., in Latin and English, signed by Tippett with small wax seal, and two witnesses. Small repaired tear. 1731. £24.00

  45. Land's End ORDNANCE SURVEY MAP Sheet XXXIII, scale 1" to 1 mile. Size 36" x 24". Small stamp in top margin 'Record Copy'. 'Portrait' format. Tear in top margin. O.S. embossed stamp 1879. £36.00

  46. Mawgan LEASE for 99 years of all those two grist water mills in Mawgan, commonly called Gweege Mill the one being a grist mill and the other a mault mill together with the toll of such corn ground... a parcell of land called the Lower Mill field together with all water-course, headwares, mill pools... On paper, size 18" x 22", large calligraphic initial letter, split almost entirely along one fold and with an early backing sheet sealed at corners with wax. Small piece missing from signature, wax seal on tag. 1680. £24.00

  47. Namboll, St. Keverne LEASE of part of a house and tenement in Namboll, Anthony Sampson of St. Keverne, yeoman, to John Sampson, his brother. Vellum, size 12" x 17", seal bound in linen in tag, 51 lines, in a fine neat hand. Signed with his mark by John Sampson. 1632. £38.00
    John Sampson was to have part of the house, including 'the little Hall, the Buttery and two Chambers above the same and one other little House called the Malt House'.


  48. Pednandrea Mine AN ACCOUNT of Copper Ore Risen in the Disputed Lande between Lord Clinton & ... Hill in Pednandrea Mine. Slip of paper size 11" x 4", listing dues paid to Lord Clinton's agent, June 1799 to Aug. 1801, together with small slip of paper listing 4 sums for 4/29ths of sales of Pedndandrea Tinstuff 1764-5. 1764-99. £14.00

  49. Perranawartha COUNTERPART LEASE of Licence to produce Copper by filtration, Edward Browne and others to Messrs. Richd. Symons & Robert Thomas Mitchell of Feock, Miners. Grants licence for 14 years, dues 1/15th, to open water channels for 'collecting Mineral Waters issuing through the alluvial soil for producing copper by filtration... in a piece of ground by Bessowe bridge in Perranawartha'. Gives exact bounds of land. 3 folio pages, wax seal. 1859. £30.00

  50. Sithney THE LIST OF PERSONS entitled to vote in the Election of a Member for the Borough of Helston, in respect of Property occupied within the Parish of Sithney by virtue of an Act passed in the Second Year of the Reign of King William the Fourth..... Folio sheet folded to size 15" x 18", printed in columns with name of Voter, Nature of Qualification, Street, Lane or other Place where property situated. Numbered in ink in margin, signed by Sithney Overseers at bottom, a few names added in ink. Folds. Dated in ink on verso. Roberts, Printer, Helston (1832). £40.00

  51. St. Minver A SURVEY will be held at The King's Arms Inn, Wadebridge, for Letting for a Term of 14 Years from Michaelmas Day, 1811, the Barton and Farm of Treglyn, with the Weens, Gunvenna, & Down Tenements adjoining.... consisting of a good Dwelling-house...186 Customary Acres.... Handbill, size 8" x 6", traces of folds. On verso are notes detailing rent per acres, new tenant etc. Liddell, Printer, Bodmin. 1810. £38.00

  52. St. Minver LEASE and Release of closes totalling 13 acres, with house, orchards, etc., in St. Minver Church Town, Jane Llewellin Leach to Revd. William Sandys. 21 pages, sm. folio. 1771. £20.00

  53. St. Minver LETTER from Jane Llewellin to Rev. Sandys, proposing that, as she has no family, he makes an offer 'of an annuity for my life for the House, all the Gardens.... & you to enjoy it for ever... I am not a young life but I'll promise beforehand to be a plague to you as long as I can'. 2p, 4to, folded with address panel on verso, broken wax seal, 2" tear in the two leaves where broken when seal opened.   54. St. Minver PROBATE of the Will and Codicils of Revd. William Sandys, deceased. 14p, folio, folded, written in a clear near hand. Cover sheet with docket title very worn, tear in first leaf. 1817. £50.00
    Author of 'Cornish Provincial Dialect' and other works. The will was dated 1808. He left his property to his nephew John Warren and friends John Molesworth of St. Breock, Edward Coode of St. Austell were Trustees.


  55.   179. London and Newcastle FIVE LETTERS From George Gilroy at Bow to his father John Gilroy of Newcastle (millwright), dated London, 29 March 1841 - 28 July, 1843. Each letter approx. two pages, in a neat hand, with integral address panel on conjoint leaf, with postmarks and wax seals. 1841-3. £90.00
    He complains of the difficult conditions 'trade is very slack here now... I drew my money out of the Savings Bank thinking these rumours of wars would depress the funds.... would you advise me to speculate in a railway share for I have got about £85 and I should like to make it work as well as me....' Later letters mention his buying a Great North of England Railway share for £13.00, enquiring whether the 'Edinburgh Railway is to come by the East coast or West....'. In August 1841 he joins a drawing school '2 guineas a quarter', but in May 1842 is still out of work 'I have had only 5 days work in the last 15 weeks and no prospect of anything doing....' Later he considers going to India as an engineer in the East India Co., quoting the rates of pay, etc.... 'I find the Sierra Lione man has 3 guineas per week... so you see father I have asked less than the 3d class engineers.... my friend advises me as trade is so dull to take a little less....'

  183. Queenhithe SAILMAKER'S ACCOUNT BOOK 1787-1792. Vellum-bound account book, size 15" x 10", recording in great detail the making and repairing of sails for a variety of ships. The book was used in the late nineteenth century as a newspaper-cuttings book, and presumably at that time about half the leaves were cut out to allow for the increased bulk of the pages. 100 completely full pages of entries remaining, lacking more or less every other leaf. The leaves have been professionally cleaned of the newpaper, de-acified, and the book recased in original binding, about 6 pages with surface rubbing and loss of some of the text due to the removal, many pages lightly browned. The alphabetical index of 120 names of ships and people has been unaffected. At the top of the page are headings of name of the ship with its Captain, followed by work done. The work done on the ship 'Earl of Abergavenny', Captain John Wordsworth Commander, in October 1789, lists costs for 'A Foresail best Hempen English Duck (Govt. Pattn.)... Cut 2nd Foresail 11 yds deep the middle, 12 yds the leaches... Doublings 55 yds... in all 466...' He also cut 2 mizens, mainstaysail '14 yds deep the Leach 2 yds the forepart, 27 cloths the stay, 28 cloths the skirts with Gores and Pieces...'. Bulleid (Arthur) FOLDERS OF DRAWINGS AND PLANS relating to Glastonbury Lake Village. 6 manilla folders, 4to, labelled in pencil 'G.L.V.1' etc., containing a quantity of drawings, notes on the excavations, and rubbings. The bulk of the drawings are of timbers and are on large sheets of thinnish paper, in pencil, some with notes indicating type of hatching etc., approx. size 14" x 15", folded, some labelled on verso in pencil, for example 'Framework of loom? G.L.V', 'Oak Pile found s. of Mound 81 1905', 'Mortised Beam Found under Mound 72 1905', etc. One folder contains a water colour section on thick paper, signed Arthur Bulleid February 1893, scale 2" to 1ft., a section through mound 65 E-W showing clay, fire ash etc., plus various other sections, a few coloured. There are also a couple of ink drawings presumably prepared for publication, labelled 'Plate', plus some actual large rubbings of stones, one labelled 'Plan of Stone Hearth G.L.V.', and some rubbings of decorative freizes, presumably on pottery. There is also a manuscript copy of Bulleid's paper on Divination read at the Glastonbury Archaeological Society, 1896, an MS 'List of Subscribers to the Excavation Fund 1892-99', 7pp, 4to. 33 large drawings and numerous small ones, some on tracing paper. 1893-1905. £400.00
    This was one of the earlies studies of an English wetland archaelogical site. At the time it was not possible to conserve waterlogged wood so it was re-buried or stored in water.

  271. Renouf family, Guernsey RENT RECEIPT BOOK Small 8vo notebook, vellum covers very stained and warped, flap lacking clasp. 95 pages of entries, plus many blanks. Front pastedown and first leaf badly affected with damp, first 10 or so leaves damped. 1 page index of names. Records payments by Renouf family, 1759 - 1819, most of the entries being in the earlier part of this period. For example a typical page entry reads 'Recu de Pierre Renouf la somme de quatre deneres de froment de rent qu'il me doit sur sa maison & terre... Jean Rougier'. In subsequent years other people have signed as receiving the rent, on the same page, including 'Pre. Guille signet pr. mon pere'. Another page records payment in fowls 'Comme fermier du Poulage... deus a Sa Majeste Rec. de Pierre Renouf des Nicoles un couple de poulle pr. an pour le Poulage de sa Maison des trois ans dern. Finely printed broadside, size 16" x 12", decorative border, engraved view of the bridge at head, size 3" x 8", 2 colums of description, including detailed account of the proceedings on 26th April, 1825 when the first chain was thrown over the Straits ('upon the completion of the Chain, three of the workmen, viz. H. Davis, stone-mason, Wm. Williams, labourer, and John Williams, carpenter, had the temerity to pass along the upper surface of the Chain which forms a curvature of 590 feet...'), and much technical information. Traces of folds, small piece missing from left margin, some creasing in margins, and rust mark at bottom margin, reaching " inside border. Someone has added in ink at the edges of the engraving the Tollhouse and the Anglesey end of the chains. 1825. £125.00

  292. Borrer (Henry), of Portslade, Sussex A LOG BOOK Containing The Proceedings on Board the Barque Wellington From the Port of London to Madras Commanded by James Liddle Esq., R.N., Commencing August 15, 1839, Ending May 2nd 1840. Kept by Henry Borrer Midshipman. Specialy printed Log Book, Published by Charles Wilson, Chartseller to the Admiralty. Size 13" x 10", plain card wraps, lacks spine, held with old sellotape. First few leaves slightly browned and brittle at edges. Printed title page with MS inserts, followed by list of Ship's Company with Rank and place of birth, list of Passengers, with place received on board and where landed, 'List of ships spoken with' outward and homeward bound, 'Remarks on the Island of Tristan de Achuna' with good detail, e.g. names of people on island ('an orphan boy whose Father fell from a Cliff 13 years ago Peter Paterson... since the Wellington's last visit 2 children have been added to the number..'), remarks on the wreck 'Medellin'. There follows the log itseslf, from Aug. 18th 1839, 2 days per page, printed columns for courses, winds remarks etc., 114 pages (228 days of entries). Blanks at end. At the end is a list of 'Land seen during the Voyage, and 'Birds', 'Fish'. As the title page is dated 1847 it would appear this is a carefully written fair copy written up years later from a rougher account made during the voyage. There is a loose 4to sheet of paper watermarked 1838 with the 'List of Ships Spoken with...' which he has obviously used to copy up, and another piece of paper which seems to be from the original smaller and more untidy log. He has also pasted small pen drawings, some coloured, throughout the log, which seem to have been done on the same type of paper. They are drawings of ships seen, outlines of islands etc., including outline of Madeira, and description of Funchal, a brig, 'A ship in heavy SSW squall off Madagascar', 'Island of Ascension', 'Wellington, Minerva, Hopeful. Main Royal yard carried away'. In the 'Remarks' section he gives details of how the watch employed ('tarring rigging'), speed, sail carried, land seen, deaths, illnesses, details of ships encountered, weather ('March 1st 1840. The surf from Robin Island distinctly heard too foggy to see it - at daylight found ourselves 2 miles from Shore and a most terrific surf extending half a mile. Prepared to slip the chain, windlap broke by violence of the surges...'). 1847. £300.00
    '6th Mar. 1840. Mr Kenrick the Chief Officer fell overboard from the Forecastle when stowing the Anchor but when falling caught hard of the Jib Guys and soon appeared upon deck again much to the astonishment of the Captain who was in a great fright'.

    The original George Haden had worked for Boulton and Watt. The firm he founded was based in Trowbridge. Payne (John), religious writer LETTER to Joseph Cockfield, Upton, Essex. 8 lines, saying he has read his MS and proposed a few alteration 'I think it will make a very pleasing disquisition for the Magazine'. 1p, 4to, conjoint leaf with address panel, triangular and small round postmarks. 1772. £18.00
    Payne was author of 'Evangelical Discourses', and translator of Thomas a Kempis.

    A WOMAN'S DIARIES COVERING NEARLY FIFTY YEARS

  324. Suffolk and Cornwall DIARIES of Catherine Williams (nee Almack) of Tredrea, Perranarworthal, 1847-1895. 43 diaries, lacking the years 1849, 1853 (the year of her marriage), 1859, 1871, 1875, 1890. Diaries are uniform size, 5" x 3", morocco wraps with tuck-in flaps, 'The Coronet Elegant Pocket Annual' and similar, with engraved views, pages of information on Parliament, etc. Mostly with entries for every day, although with a few years having a large gap of several months (there are no gaps of a few days). Most of the diaries have been attacked by worm on the spine, and some with worm holes in the wraps, in two cases the front wrap is detached, internally sound and clean, and legible. 1847-1895. £360.00
    A record remarkable for its time span. The early diaries cover her adolescence when she was taught by a governess: 'Jan 18th. 1847. Read French History. In disgrace about it.... Jan 21. Wrote letter about Wolsey. Lord Thurlow slept here. Jan 22. Lord Thurlow not down till 5p.m.' '20th Mar. Miss Harding took us to Sudbury to hear the Ethiopian singers', her meetings with her future husband Henry Williams: 'saw last of H.W. for a month from the window'. The diaries after 1853 record the daily round of her life at Tredrea, the birth of her children '5th June. 1856. Michael Beauchamp born at half past three a.m.' 'Perran Demonstration. Fireworks etc. in honour of baby. Schoolchildren's procession thro' grounds'. Many visits to local families are recorded - the Bullers, Rogers, Harveys, Tremaynes, Rashleighs, Foxes, de Dunstanvilles - and there are children's parties and social events at Trelissick, Trerice, Scorrier, Carclew, Prideaux Place (Jan. 1854) 'Walked out in morning to Padstow Harbour & after to Trevone Bay. Lovely walk. Left Prideaux and posted to Truro'. There are some interesting and touching domestic details '3rd April 1854. Ran about washing. Cried all morning. Mrs Harvey called.' 'Nurse went home for the day. Took care of baby all day'. 'Playing Reels. White cat had kittens.' She briefly refers to her husbands activities and she sometimes accompanies him: 'To Truro ticketing', 'Henry took Godfrey (Hallifax) to the Mines.' 'Henry & I took long walk through arsenic works & home by turnpike road'. Henry Williams was related to Williams of Scorrier House. The family had set up the Perran Foundry.

  328. Westmacott (Richard) LETTER to an unknown correspondent, Mount St., 1st June, 1813, saying he is 'flattered by the dedication you propose me and the mode of arrangement', saying he has long admired his work, which is 'honourable to our country'. 1 page, 4to. 1813. £18.00
    Westmacott (1775-1856), sculptor. With Flaxman and Baily he sculpted and reliefs on Marble Arch, and created many statues, monuments and busts of eminent figures, such as Captain Cook in St. Pauls, the Duke of Bedford in Russell Square, etc.

    ERUPTION OF SOUFFRIERE IN SAINT VINCENT

  331. Windward Islands LETTER signed J. Chamberlain, Downing Street, 14 May, 1902, to The Right Honourable The Lord Mayor, appealing to him for aid on behalf of the Windward Island of Saint Vincent, asking that a fund might be opened at the Mansion House. 33 lines, typed, 1p., foolscap, some additions in manuscript, impressed stamp of the Colonial Office top left. Enclosed is a copy of the telegram received from the Governor, Sir R.B. Llewellyn, 11.20.p.m. 13th May, 20 lines, typed, reporting on the catastrophe 'Country on East Coast between Robin Rock and Georgetown apparently struck and devastated similarly to St Pierre and fear that practically all living things within that radiu have been killed probably 1.600... 1000 bodies found and buried, 160 sent into hospital... I have got the coasting steamer from St. Lucia running up and down Leeward Coast with water and provisions 2000 received relief'. 14th May 1902. £95.00
    Chamberlain was Secretary of State for the Colonies. 'There is no part of His Majesty's dominions, I may say with confidence, which deserves so truly as St. Vincent the practical sympathy of the people of this country. In normal times it has been among the most depressed island in the sorely tried group of West Indian Colonies... and it has now within four years, been visited by two calamaties...'
