  10. Clifton LETTER regarding the terms of a lease for no. 2 Harley Place. From J. Warne in Clifton to A. Sarel in Surrey St., Strand, London. 1«p, 4to, address panel with broken wax seal on verso, Bristol postmark. The letter is in response to a letter from Mr Bernard which is on the first page. 20th July 1831. £10.00
    'Messrs. Hayman and Co. have given an estimate of £45 for the painting and as they intend papering the Drawing Rooms and bed Rooms it will cost from 25 to 30£ more'.


  11. Port Fires AN ACT to remove the Danger of Fire amongst the Ships in the Port of Bristol, by preventing the landing of certain Commodities on the present Quays; and for providing a convenient Quay and proper Places for landing and storing the same.... Black Letter, cover leaf plus 30pp, sm. folio, disbound, Act of Parliament. Slight darkening of paper on last few leaves. 1776. £14.00

  12. Saint Stephen AN ACT for making more commodious Ways and Passages within the Parish of Saint Stephen, in the City of Bristol; and for enlarging the Burying Ground belonging to the said Parish. Black Letter, cover leaf + 40pp, disbound, including Schedule listing houses in Marsh St., The Quay etc., with occupiers. Some foxing on first few leaves. 1774. £18.00

  13. Theatre Royal PLAYBILL Sept. 3rd 1867. Return of the Eminent Tragedian Mr Charles Dillon, After His Triumphant Tour Round the World... Playbill on thin paper, with the title of plays in very large letters, paper size 29" x 10", some light browning in places, small triangular piece torn from top margin with loss of two letters in the word 'Theatre'. Performances were 'Belphegor', 'Captain of the Watch' and 'King Lear'... together with... a damaged copy with some loss, of a similar playbill, 1866, advertising James Bennett in 'Hamlet' and (oddly) 'My Wife's Dentist'. 1867. £24.00
    Charles Dillon had toured America in the early 1860's, and appeared there in 'Belphegor'.


  14. Theatre Royal PLAYBILL March 15th, 1866. Advertising Mr. Dobbin's Annual Benefit. Printed on thin paper, size 30" x 10". The bill included 'The Hidden Hand', 'Ivanhoe' with a ballet divertisement. 1866. £25.00
    Details the different scenes in each play. After 'The Temporary Triumph of Atrocity', 'Ivanhoe' ends in 'The Unalloyed Happiness of Everybody'.


  15. Theatre Royal PLAYBILL February 17th - 21st. 1868. Printed with large type-faces in red and black on thin paper, size 30" x 10". Advertising Miss Marie Wilton's London Company in the Great Comedy of 'Caste', and concluding with the Farce of 'The Young Widow'. 1866. £22.00

Chester LEASE OF POSSESSION of a piece of ground with dwellinghouse, workshops and other buildings on the east side of Nicholas Street in Chester, The Governors of the Possessions and Goods of The Free Grammar School of King Edward the Sixth in Macclesfield, to James Hilton of Chester. Vellum, size 17" x 25", written in a large clear hand. Fine large oval wax seal of the Trustees. 1822. £35.00
    Description of the property gives measurements in feet and occupiers of adjacent properties.


  17. Stockport, Warrington ORDNANCE SURVEY MAP Scale 1" to 1 mile. Composite map made of quarter sheets, border all round. Size 14" x 44", linen backed, folding into small 4to boards, cloth worn. Some slight 'toning' in places. Railway line added in fine red ink between Grand Junction Railway to just north of Altrincham. Electrotype c1870. £25.00

Camborne MEMORANDUM OF AGREEMENT between John Fiddick and Henry Walters of Camborne whereby Fiddick surrenders his title in Croft Mitchel in Camborne, excepting the house and '20 Lace of ground' for potatoes, together with two other small slips of paper relating to the transaction. 1p., folio. 1811. £15.00

  19. Checkhouse Common RECEIPT signed by Henry Paynter affirming he has received four pounds from John Hill for the annuity in consideration of his house and garden and also '1/16th share of Checkhouse(?) Common... and from the sale of Five Tons of Copper Oar to be raised in the said Common... to pay Five pounds yearly instead of four pounds'. 1p, folio. signed and witnessed, blank conjoint leaf. 1757. £14.00

  20. Gulval PLAN OF PART OF THE PARISH OF GULVAL Scale 6 chains = 1 inch. By Thomas Mathews, Surveyor. Manuscript plan in ink and three colours, size 26" x 32", dissected and mounted on linen, folding to 14" x 8". Shows Chyandour, Trescrowan, Ponjou, Polkinghorne, Garras, etc, with buildings, roads, streams, shoreline. Many small fields, all numbered, large number in the south coloured brown - later note by reference simply states 'Brown - potatoes'. Ink smudge near scale bar, some foxing, some dust-staining at bottom of map. A few ink amendments giving acreage of fields. Signed and dated by Matthews bottom right. 21st October, 1872. £170.00

  21. Manor of Restormel AWARD OF THE COMMISSIONERS made under 'An Act to Confirm and Enfranchise the Estates of the Conventionary Tenants of the Ancient Accessionable Manors of the Duchy of Cornwall...' concerning the commutation of Fines, Fees, Heriots, etc. Size 20" x 24", printed label with decoration at corners on front wrap with title. 2pp. preamble explaining the Award, followed by 3 printed pages, printed on rectos only, in columns for Name of Proprietor, Tenement, Particulars of Lands, Annual Payments, Heriot, Arrears. Plain paper wraps, cloth spine, wraps detached and scuffed, sewing loose, back wrap frayed at edges. Name 'Preston Wallis' stamped on label. Loosely folded down centre (but not creased). July 1845. £50.00
    Tenements include Woodland, Combe, Barn Yate.


  22. Penrose Sophia, St. Enoder COUNTERPART DEMISE of Penrose Sophia in the parish of St. Enoder, for 14 years from Michaelmas 1843, William Rashleigh to William Langdon Jnr... together with... similar documents for 1808, and 1823, Rashleigh to Sarah and William Bullock. On paper, size 21" x 28", signed by Langdon with wax seal. 1843. £22.00

  23. Penwith RELEASE of Lands by way of Mortgage £1900. Christopher Hawkins of Trewinnard and Richard Pearce of St Levan to Peter Bown of Falmouth. Indenture on 6 vellum membranes, approx. 30" x 32", the last sheet comprising a Schedule of 32 leases 1716 to 1730. Signed with 2 wax seals. Refers to lands at Leskinneck near Penzance, Tremothack in St Buryan, and a long list of tin bounds belonging to Pearce in the Penwith area. etc. 28th June 1757. £85.00
    Much detail on tin bounds in West Penwith, taking up 25 lines of text, e.g.'one in thirty six Doles of one pair of Bounds in Carne Meale Ball in Trewillard called Adga Wheal Reeth and Wheal Goffa.... Park Bean on the Wasts of Carnyarth Botallack and Carallack.... one fourth part of two pair of Tin Bounds in Zennor called the little Treveale.... two pair one on each side of Wheal Molings the other pair called Adsawensack in Gulval and Madron...".


  24. Penzance SKETCH OF CORIN'S FIELDS 1834. Simple sketch plan in ink, on folio sheet, showing four fields, adjoining owners. Scale bar with scale of chains, (3 chains to an inch), with measurement and total. Signed by J.H. Rutger. 1834. £14.00
    A note added in a later hand below title 'since Coulson's, bought 1850 by J.J. Rogers. Rutger surveyed Penzance for a lithographed town plan of 1841.


  25. Perranarworthal to Redruth Railway AN ACT for making a Railway from the Cornwall Railway to Redruth.... 14pp, small folio, disbound, Act of Parliament. 1864. £18.00

  26. Pipe Roll JOHN STACKHOUSE ESQUIRE Sheriff Accounting for the Issues of his Office from the feast of St. Michael... for the space of one whole year sendeth an account of the fee farm and other Debts underwritten, viz. PARCELS OF THE PIPE... GREENWAX... Roll on vellum, size 58" x 11", on two membranes sewn together. Lists sums from various properties in Cornwall, for example 'Of the Prior and Convent of St. Michael Cornwall for a messuage and land in Lambden...', 'Of Francis Godolphin Esq. for a Messuage and land in Milor', 'Of Simon Middleton for the Manor of Bodmin'. 'Greenwax' includes fines of persons at the Assizes and General Gaol delivery for the County, at Quarter Sessions, etc. There is also a total for Judges' lodgings, delivering proclamations, etc., with sum total. Signed by Edward Woodcock, Deputy Clerk of the Pipe. Vellum with some discoloration due to damp, and with some 'cockling' of vellum. The top 6 inches with the title has been affected with damp or rodent damage with loss of some words. The text itself is legible throughout. 1779. £140.00

  27. South Crofty Ltd. SHARE CERTIFICATE Capital £130,000. Printed in pale mauve, with decorative border, manuscript inserts, cancelled stamps. Size 11" x 13". Made out for 50 shares. Trace of central fold. 1951. £26.00

  28. St. Enoder COUNTERPART OF DEMISE of Ennys and Chyowne in St. Enoder, William Rashleigh to John Parkin. On large sheet of paper, wax seal. 1823. £12.00

  29. St. Issey LETTER from John Warren at St. Issey to his uncle the Revd. Willliam Sandys at St. Minver. Dated Monday Nov. 7th 1808. 2«p., 4to, folded and addressed to Sandys at St. Minver. Feint traces of seal. Explains that he would like to see him after the birth of his son but his wife was taken ill after the birth and is feverish. Says he would like to call the boy after his uncle 'who has ever been a father to me from my youth up'. 44 lines in a small hand. Signed 'J. Warren' 1808. £22.00
    'I have sent the children with Elizabeth to Betty's our old servt... the infant is charmingly well...' Sandys had no children and left his property to this nephew, who was to take the name Sandys.


  30. Sunday Observance LINES Dedicated to Abram B. Broadside, size 9" x 8", folds, being a poem in 17 stanzas, printed in two columns with decorative border between them, satirising the hypocrisy of those who impose a strict Sunday observance on the lower orders whilst the elite do as they like. n.d. c1830? £38.00
    'But Mechanics who travel on foot/Shall taste not a drop of sour Porter/They dare not - and if they dispute/We'll fine them on every quarter... Godolphin the doctrine imbibes/And hunts after Masons and Tailors/To bridewell conveys in whole tribes/Gipsy-women and castaway Sailors'. A previous owner has written a footnote in ink in the bottom margin explaining the reference to fines in the second line as referring to 'Revd. Molesworth's opinion expressed on the Bench at St. Columb'


  31. Exeter Teign Valley and Chagford Railway Company AN ACT to authorise the Exeter Teign Valley and Chagford Railway Company to construct Deviation Railways to revive the powers and further extend the time limited for the completion of their authorised railway.... 10pp, disbound, Act of Parliament. 1898. £10.00

  41. Fortescue (Earl) LETTER dated Castle Hill Jany. 30 1886. 9 lines on 8vo sheet, pasted to larger sheet of stiff paper. To J. Jesmond. Advises him on what he should write as a dedication in his book to be presented to the Queen. 1886. £9.00
    James Jesmond was the author of ' Dissertation on the rights to the sea shores' 1877, and technical works on boundaries etc. (he was a tithe commissioner in Devon).


  42. Frithelstock LEASE of a share in a messuage called Southcott, now in the possession of Robert Covenay, Sir John Rolle to Richard Stevens. Vellum, first two words engraved, with decorative calligraphy, size 11" x 21", signed by Rolle. 1701. £34.00
    The term was for 'fourscore and nineteen years', with a heriot on Henry and Elizabeth Stevens, Richard's son and wife.


  43. Frithelstock RELEASE of the tenement of Southcott with houses, buildings, lands etc, Christopher Hockin to Richard Stevens. Vellum, size 13" x 20", signed by Hockin, witnessed on verso. 1725. £24.00

  44. Halberton INSTRUCTIONS FOR COVENANT from Mrs Joanna Cowlen to Mr. Thomas Baker for Halstree, Abbots Wood, Court Fields, Purtons and Stones Ground in Halberton. Manuscript conditions for lease, 3 foolscap pages, signed and witnessed. Folded. 1797. £15.00
    Includes instructions for cutting trees, sowing crops, dressing fields etc. 'Tenant to deliver to Lessor 200 of reed sheaves yearly.... and spars that shall be wanted for thatching the premises....'

  48. Little Torrington MARRIAGE SETTLEMENT between Anthony Welsh, William Hiern, Mary Hiern widow, and John Welsh son and heir of Anthony, and Mary Hiern Junior. Relates to lands called North Hole, Hill Ground, Northern Collins in Little Torrington. Anthony Welsh was to provide for the couple at his house called Cross, with 'Meat, Drink, Washing & Lodging, fire and Candle light, stabling for a Horse Mare or Gelding'. If they did not want to live there they could take the rents of the lands instead. 3p., folio, closely written, repaired 5" split in fold on last sheet, with some slight wear at that fold. copy, circa 1790, of a deed of 1709. £15.00

  49. Lundy BOX OF SLIDES Wooden box of slides of Lundy in the 1960's. Box size, containing 66 slides, some dated 1966, a few 1971. Also in the box is a matchbox with two small files, one containing small red stones like garnets, the other 'sand produced by weathering of shale. Landing beach Lundy.' 1960's. £15.00
    The slides mainly show coastline, rocks, seabirds, a few show buildings, helicopter.

Printed sheet, folded, with MS details, sm. folio, wax seal, signed by Abell and two witnesses, blank adjoining leaf. 1 page added in manuscript (23 lines) relating to the forthcoming marriage of Henry Abell and Ann Webber and the settlement of a farm called Balls and Bridges in Morton. 1809. £20.00

  77. Eighton Moor Colliery, Lamesley IN THE KINGS'S BENCH Between Ralph Grey, Plaintiff and John Hunter, James Lawton and George Green, Defendants. Brief for the Defendants. The Plaintiff declares that on the 1st of January 1781 he was possessed at Darlington... of Twenty Thousand Ton weight of Coals of the value of £2000... he casually lost the same and they came into the possession of the Defendants... intending to Defraud him and... converted the same to their own use. Plea Not Guilty. Manuscript on 20 pages, folded, each page measuring 18" x 13". Headings in larger 'Gothic' script. The defendants worked the Colliery under lease from Lord Ravensworth. c1781. £80.00
    Draft copy with some amendments. Gives names of witnesses to be called, and details of many leases, dating back to 1623, including the lease on which the Plaintiff founded his claim, being a lease of Eighton Moor from the Bishop of Durham, 1773. At the end of this document is a lawyer's response dealing with a dispute about whether Eighton was in the parish of Lamesley not Chester, and whether Lamesley was a parish or a Chapelry (quoting figures for baptisms etc. from the parish books).

Refers to a dispute concerning the Pontop Pike mine and Harelaw, and to a drainage drift made in 1742 between a pit called Delight Pit and another called the Hill Pit.   81. Silksworth Colliery, Sunderland ROPE BOOK An Account of Ropes Used at Silksworth Colliery. Printed account book with entries in ink, 1874 - 1971. 64 pages of entries. Each page with printed heading as above, ruled in columns for Where Laid Out, Makers Name, Description, Date Laid On, Allowance When Sold, Cost, Time On etc. The bulk of the entries are for the nineteenth century. The first section has pages headed in ink with 'Large Winding Ropes', then there is a section with ropes entered under maker's name (Hartlepool Ropery, Webster & Co., etc.) Page index at front. The later sections deal with no 2 and 3 Pit. Binding in quarter reversed calf, inner joints broken, front endpaper detached, a few pages loose. Most of calf missing from spine. Shows the line coloured in pink and areas of land either side shaded in different colours, with owners named, each sheet representing one mile of line. Map shows buildings, roads and footpaths, streams, woodland and parkland indicated with small trees, deciduous and evergreen, certain buildings, such as White Horse Inn, Hermitage, Parsonage, named. There are manuscript additions under the name of the owners listing occupiers with acreage occupied. Sheets damped and frayed along bottom edge of first four sheets, reaching to a maximum of one inch in from the edge, on the last sheet there is an area where the paper is damaged and worn, about 3" in diameter.     Says she's glad to hear her daughter is as well as can be expected in the circumstances but thinks it best if she and the children do not come to stay with her as 'it would be too much for her weak spirit... the Hooping cough is still very much about and a fever among the children... I am much obliged to you and Mrs Branfill for the copy of my Dr. Son's will, he could not do too much for so good a Wife'. There is a strange postcript about not sending dogs to India 'for fear of Madness'. The son referred to is probably Champion Branfill, who had married Charlotte Brydges and died in 1792. The writer had married Matthew Patrick.

Servt. J.J. Myres. Engraved town plan, dissected in 18 sections, size 33" x 46", restored and laid down on linen, preserving original marbled paper endpapers. Silk edging tape. Wide decorative 'Greek key' border, scale bar, scale 4" = 1000ft. Large decorative title. Some restored tears in paper, and traces of small horizontal creases in surface. Each sheet size 38" x 33", folding into blue decorative paper endpapers, size approx. 10" x 7«", each with key map on the front. Key and Explanation also pasted to the back endpaper of two of the maps. Boundaries of Postal Districts coloured in a thin red line, Town Delivery Limits in green. Water features, main roads, woodland, parkland, cemeteries and stations hand-coloured. Capital letters in red indicate postal districts. Large title along top, wide piano key border, scale and Explanation along bottom, with Stanford, Charing Cross imprint. A few very light foxing spots at a couple of places in margins, an area south of Crystal Palace has some small indentation marks in the surface of the paper, mainly in a blank area of fields, and there are a few similar indentations south of Regent's Park, otherwise a sound clean copy with no wear in the linen between folds.     Extends in the North East to the edge of Epping Forest and Forest Farm, in the South East to 'Beckenham June Station' and 'Bromley Hill House', and the South West to Christ Church, Wimbledon, and Morden Station, and in the North West to Kingsbury Reservoir. This edition does not show the Midland Railway line through Shoot Up Hill, Cricklewood, with the station at West End, which is on the 1872 map. This line was opened in 1868. On the other hand, for example, it shows housing built along Griffiths Road, Merton, which the 1862 map does not. This would put the date at around 1867.

    The top view shows the works with a Regency facade, a pavement in front with elegant figures strolling and talking in doorway, the smoking cone behind, open countryside on the left with a house among trees in the distance. The lower view shows the canal in the foreground with barges and horse towing, the cone and works, with smoking chimneys, on the opposite bank, with figures working unloading barges. The two views present an interesting contrast.

Introduces 'Mr Mathews, an artist an Englishman and friend of mine.' The writer says he had been Ballantyne's pupil at the School of Design, Edinburgh. 1«p., folds, in yellow envelope, hand delivered... together with a letter to him in French, 1850 on the subject of expenses that would be incurred by artists and suggesting a new proposition to be put to them. 1866 and 1850. £12.00
    The Scottish painter John Ballantyne was known for his portraits of artists in their studios.

Grave (Sarah) THESE ARE THE DYING WORDS OF SARAH GRAVE She was Seised upon by a very sharp fever in the Latter part of the 2nd month 1709 and Departed this Life the 5th of the 3d mo. following... Manuscript account of the death of Sarah Grave and the instructions (of a religious nature) she gave to her family on her death bed. 36 lines on one side of 4to sheet, folded, repaired tear on verso along the whole of one fold. No date, early eighteenth century. £18.00
    Refers to her son Joseph, and a James Wilson.


  247. Guernsey and North Devon NEWSPAPER CUTTINGS SCRAP BOOK containing cuttings 1874-1882. In album size 17" x 12", half calf, title 'Extracts. Newspaper Cuttings &c' in gilt on spine. Calf rubbed at corners and at head and foot of spine, cloth slightly faded. 186 pages of pasted-in cuttings from newspapers such as the North Devon Herald. Articles mainly relate to North Devon, but there are also many from 'Tupper's History of Guernsey', as well as odd poems, humourous anecdotes, etc. 1874-1882. £35.00
    Seems to have been compiled by a member of the Guille family. There are initials 'G.F.S.G' (a later member of the family) on the fly-leaf. Includes reports of meetings of the Devonshire Association, articles on North Devon local history by 'Marland', 'Archaeological Corner' of Devon deeds etc. There is an interesting series of annotations in ink to a report on the Zulu War, April 1879, where (presumably) the owner of the scrapbook has corrected mis-spellings of Zulu names, facts about the battle etc, in ink (including crossing out a description of the attacking Zulu warriors as wearing feathers and ox tails and writing 'stark naked', and correcting 7,000 to 15,000 for the number of the Zulu army.

  268. Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, Monmouth SETTLEMENT on the Marriage of Major General Burr with Mary Davis of Chepstow. 14 large vellum sheets, 4 wax seals. Refers to messuage, farms, public house at Alvington, tenements at Tiddenham, house, cottages, and messuage with warehouse and counting house in Chepstow, detailing occupiers and rents paid, together with long list of named pasture lands, orchards etc. in Alvington and Chepstow, and the Right of Presentation to the Vicarage of Chepstow. 5 wax seals, including a fine one with image of pelican and her young. 1808. £45.00
    Daniel Burr (1749 - 1828) had been in a colonel in the army of the East India Company. He was made Major General in 1805, and Lt. General in 1815. The Davis family of Chepstow had inherited one half of the substantial Manor of Alvington (see Victoria County History of Gloucestershire). Other parties mentioned are Edwin Bayntun Sandys, Anthony Lechmere, James Skey and Thomas Thomas.

Dissected and mounted on linen. Title as above in yellow oval cartouche on tablet. An earlier owner seems to have gone over the small figures of the date 1802 in the cartouche in ink.
