The inset map from the scarce original 1828 edition of the Ashmead map, which has been cut from the bottom right hand corner of the plan, the total size of which was 75" x 58". Engraved plan, size 11" x 13", scale bar, and Reference. Scale 9 miles to 1 inch. 3 repaired edge tears which reach approx. 1" into plan. 1828. £20.00

  9. Bristol Spring Assizes COMMON AND SPECIAL JURY LISTS Two printed lists on blue paper, for 1873, each listing approx. 50 jurors with occupations. Pinned to the lists are papers relating to a case in the Exchequer of Pleas concerning land at Churchstaunton in Devon, Buckland and Coombe St. Nicholas in Somerset. 1873. £18.00
    Among the occupations listed are seedsman, carver, dressing case maker, wine merchant, cutler, surgical instrument maker.

Hudd (Alfred) BRISTOL COINS AND TOKENS of the XVIIth, XVIIIth and XIXth Centuries. 15pp., 8vo, with many additions to the catalogue described in MS on the facing blank pages, in the compiler's hand. On the title page is inscription 'John Latimer Esq. With the Compiler's Compts.' Later owner's indelible stamp inside. Disbound, from Proceedings of the Clifton Antiquarian Club. 1896. £24.00

  20. Manuscript Charter THE CHARTER OF THE CITTY OF BRISTOL Contemporary manuscript copy of the Charter of Charles II, 1664, on 240 pages, sm. folio, bound in full reversed calf, later Victorian reversed calf spine and gilt label. In Latin, neatly written throughout, with wide margins, summaries in margins in English (e.g. 'That they shall have but one sheriff and how to be elected'). On or two notes in a different hand in opposite margin with comments 'I think this Grant of the office of Escheator to the mayor may be omitted....' etc.) c1664. £160.00
    Of this Charter Latimer says 'The instrument, which did not receive the Great Seal until April 22nd 1664, is of prodigious dimensions, and its cost was enormous'.

  24. Perry (William Stevens) THE 'AMERICAN' SERMON Preached in S. Paul's Cathedral, London, on Sunday, July 4th, A.D. 1897, by William Stevens Perry, D.D. (Oxon.) LL.D., Bishop of Iowa and Historiographer of the American Church. 19pp., 4to, some foxing spots throughout, plain wraps with printed title at top 'In Honorem Bristoliensium'. Wraps ragged at spine, old archival tape repair at spine. Bristol, Old England: Printed for Private Circulation. 1898. £22.00
    With a foreword by William George, the Bristol antiquary: 'The far-reaching consequences of the expedition John Cabot and the Merchants of Bristol in 1497, are set forth in glowing language in this sermon.... I thought many of my fellow-citizens would be glad to posses this eloquent discourse of one of the most learned of the American Bishops, and I have therefore, by the courteous permission of the prelate, had it re-printed for presentation only.'

  26. Redcliffe Street LEASE FOR A YEAR of a tenement in Redcliffe Street, William Bridges Champion, Gentleman, and John Crofts, Esquire, to William Webley of Chancery Lane, London. Vellum, size 17" x 25", signed by Crofts and Champion with 2 wax seals. 1770. £17.00

  27. Rose and Crown PHOTOGRAPH showing the Rose and Crown public house, the name 'Townley' on the sign board, with all its windows on the three stories broken, a group of men, one of whom is carrying a jug, lounging in the doorway. Size 8" x 6", mounted on card, with name of W.H. Moore, Artist and Photographer, Merchant Street?. Photo very slightly faded. c1880? £18.00
    The pub is on a cobbled hill, possibly Kingsdown area.


  28. Saint Nicholas Parish LUNACY CERTIFICATE Folio sheet, printed, with details added in manuscript. Signed by a surgeon and another witness declaring `William Miles of the Parish of St Nicholas, Rigger, is by Lunacy or otherwise, Furiously mad or so far disordered in his senses that it may be dangerous to permit him to go abroad'. Attached is a note from the surgeon, Mr Grant of Queen Square. 29th Dec. l826. £26.00

Diocese of Chester RULES AND ORDERS Agreed upon at a General Meeting of the Clergy of the five Deaneries... in the Archdeaconry of Richmond.... held at Kendal, the sixth day of July 1786 to consider of a plan for the relief of the necessitous Clergy and their Families, within the said Deaneries. Printed on 4pp., sm. folio, folded. Piece clipped from bottom margin at corner, not affecting text, last leaf spotty with slight wear at folds. Lists 20 resolutions for the formation of the Charity, followed by list of officers elected, and 'An Account of Subscriptions and Benefactions...' listing five clases of subscribers, with amounts contributed. 1786. £25.00

    Gives names, addresses, occupations, numbers of shares held.


  43. Clowance Estate PARTICULARS AND PLANS of Lands in the Parishes of Camborne, Crowan, Gwinear, Perran, Breage, Germoe and St. Keverne, comprising about 5,521 Acres.... for Sale by Auction... 27th - 31st October, 1919. Part II. 118pp, folio, lacks back wrap and spine, front wrap detached and some pages loose. Lacks 4 of ten plans, some page edges ragged, stain in margin of a few pages. 1919. £20.00
    Cheap copy of the Particulars for an important sale. Part II contained the major part of the estate, the sale being held over 5 days, whereas Part I was on one day. Comprises the Manors of Hellogan, Clowance, Penponds and Barripper, Binnerton and St. Keverne. As well as numerous farms, lands cottages includes mine wastes, quarries, chapel, Coastguard Station at Prussia Cove, Lifeboat House Porthoustock, etc.

    Gives the exact limits, mentioning the stone posts etc. 'from a Stone Post set up against the South Hedge of the Garden Close part of the tenement of Binner.... in a line with the Woolf's Great Engine House on Wheal Vor... to a Stone Post fixed up in Binner Wood....' etc.

  48. Day and Son, Lithographers TO THE DIRECTORS OF THE CORNWALL AND SOUTH DEVON RAILWAYS This View of the Royal Albert Bridge At Saltash, Constructed of Wrought Iron, from the designs of I.K. Brunel, Esqre., F.R.S. is respectfully inscribed by The Publisher. Lithograph on stiff paper, from a drawing by C.A. Scott, engraved surface size 11" x 16", hand-coloured, in buff card mount. To the left of title is a list of measurements (height, weight etc.), and to the right a 10-line description. Published by J. Haydon, Fore St., Devonport. c1859. £170.00

  49. Fox (Charles) A CORNISH DIALOGUE Gracey Penwear and Mally Trevisky. Manuscript copy which appears to be of Fox's poem, except that Gracey in named 'Penwear' instead of 'Penrose', followed by 'A Cornish Dialogue', being a conversation between 'Tom' and 'Dick'. 4 sides 4to, paper watermarked 1809.   53. Gwinear RELEASE of the Freehold estate of Taskus in Gwinear... the leasehold esate of Trevessa in St Erth remaining charged with the said Rent charge, Mrs Wilmot Nicholls to R. Osborne. On paper, 22" x 15", 2 wax seals. 1878. £14.00

  54. Helston COMPLAINT of Grace, Eleanor and Margaret Gill, Executrixes of the will of Robert Gill, Surgeon, against William Knuckey in a Plea of Trespass. Two and a half pages, manuscript, folio, written on one side only in a small hand, outlining the Case. Attached is a list of 23 Jurors, with a note of those who were sworn. c1770. £18.00
    The defendant did not appear. The case concerned a promissory note.


  55. Helston streets TWO BILLS for payment by the Borough to Michael James for carrying stones and sand to the streets. Oct. - November 1782, January 1783. One 4to, the other sm. 8vo. 1782-3. £16.00

  56. Helston, Scilly THE EXAMINATION of Esther Bonstow alias Rowe... touching the place of the last legal Settlement of James Rowe her illegitimate son... Folio sheet, 7 lines of printing with ms inserts, followed by 23 lines of manuscript. Signed with her mark by Esther, and by two Justices. 1826. £36.00
    Explains that at sixteen she moved from Helston to St. Mary's, Scilly, where she was married to Richard Rowe, a soldier, and lived for five years. They then moved to Plymouth where she had a son. Her husband left her and she applied for relief, but at Tavistock, the place of her husband's Settlement, it was discovered that at the time of their marriage on Scilly he already had a wife.

On adjoining sheet is a second page listing 46 names and amounts dispensed, 1801 (for Xmas 1800)... together with similar documents for the period 1786 to 1812, and a bundle of documents detailing 'What the Poor Rec'd weekly North Side' and 'South Side', 'Account of Paupers who Received Pay, 1802', etc., and account of 'them who receive to attending Paupers', plus various small chits held with pins, and a 1p extract from Mrs Darell's will, relating to funds from her estate at Trewornan to be used for the poor of St. Minver. 1786-1812. £90.00

    Notes various judgements in the past, including that the western side was to be repaired by the 'inhabitants of the County of Cornwall' and the eastern side by Devon, and that 'there was a publick survey called and held abt. 60 years since at the place for building the new bridge... and set the same to one Palmer a Mason of Lyfton for £100.' Concludes that the bridge is in decay 'and that severall persons and Horses had been drownd there and many others in danger of their lives'. Possibly written as a student exercise.

    The Act of Parliament for the building of the nine-mile Railway line between Croydon and Wandsworth was passsed in 1801. The engineer for the project was William Jessop. The Railway was opened on 26th July, 1803, and was very successful, an extension to Godstone being opened in 1805. It is often referred to as one of the first public railways in the world. Jessop's route was used later for the London to Brighton railway.

  386. Peninsular War NOTEBOOK manuscript, with transcripts of letters of the Oliver family, and James Olvier who was killed at Badajoz in Spain. With some notes on the Oliver family of Paddington. 29pp., small 8vo., limp wraps. The letters transcribed are from 1798-1811. c1880. £45.00
    The first letter tells of his escape from Orleans, with further letters from Portugal 'This Corps of the Army has been in a state of maturity for the last fortnight, the French being expected from the Province of Spanish Estramadura... the Cantonments we occupy threaten the high roads to Seville and Madrid... as far as my weak judgment goes we shall pay no attention to Seville, that as soon as Almeida, Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajos fall, which we may expect in about 20 days, the Spanish Corps now collecting in this Province will be put into Garrison and employed in keeping the French Corps in the South in check, whilst Lord Wellington advances on Madrid...' His last letter tells of his wound and makes arrangements for distribution of his effects should it prove fatal (which it did).

    Illustrates a huge variety of instruments, including saxhorns, cornets, bagpipes, drums, violins, bows, banjoes, mandolins, organs, bird whistles, a wide variety of accesories. There are many models of each instrument on offer, for example 40 models of concertina are illustrated, 39 types of banjo.

    MANUSCRIPT DRAFT OF WYE FISHING ACT

  403. River Wye AN ACT FOR THE CONVENIENT PASSING OF BOATS & BARGES IN AND UPON THE RIVER WYE in the Counties of Hereford, Gloucester & Monmouth and the Countreys adjacent, And for the preservation of young ffrye of Salmon and other ffish within the said River. 4 numbered pages in a neat hand of late 17th century style and spelling, on four sheets of paper size 15" x 12", sheets tied with vellum thong at top. On the first page there are two asterisks in the text referring to two clauses which have been added in the same hand in the left hand margin. The time by which certain works must be done by owners of wears and dams (a particular month), is left blank. On the verso of the last leaf are brief notes presumably concerning a charge against someone "Hee went to Breda because C.S. was there.. He was first voted a traytor..." (presumably refers to Charles Stuart). Paper folded, last page rather creased and slightly ragged at one edge. n.d. Probably Commonwealth period. £250.00
    This was probably the draft of a parliamentary bill, associated with those presented to the Commons between 1661 and 1695 dealing with the navigation of the River Wye.
