Tucker Street, St. Thomas ASSIGNMENT by Peregrine Palmer, of Fairfield in Somerset, of his part and share in Brewhouse in Tucker Street Bristol to Mr Isaac Hobhouse, Merchant, of Bristol. 3 vellum sheets, size 26" x 31", 2 good armorial wax seals. First page with some light damp spotting and short splits at folds in two places. Outside where titled rather dustmarked. 1743. £30.00
¶ Concerns 'all that late sugarhouse with five several messuages thereto belonging... two old messuages in Tucker Street purchased of John Rayner Paper Merchant...' The old messuages had been pulled down and a 'Malthouse, Brewhouse and Distillhouse.... for the carrying on of the Arts Mysteries of Maltmaking, Brewing and Distilling' was built. Seven people became partners in the business.

Nantwich Station (?) PHOTOGRAPH of a group of 16 station staff posed as a group on a platform, track on the left with steam train approaching in the distance, the men wearing uniform have 'L & N.W' on their hats and lapels. Others wear bowler or flat caps. One is obviously the station master. Size 6" x 8", mounted on thick card, one corner of card chipped away. Some very slight browning at centre of image, but details very crisp. Inscribed on verso 'Nantwich (courtesy J.B. Gandern)'. c1900 or slightly earlier. £26.00
¶ There is no Nantwich sign visible in the photo, but it should be possible from the architecture to check that attribution.

Cornish Tin Mines OFFER OF THE EMPLOYERS' FEDERATION to the Workers on the Mines. Printed 4to sheet detailing the present wages, rise per week etc for 7 grades of men, with additional concessions. States that if these terms are not accepted "the responsibility must rest with the men of certain Mines closing down never to re-open again". Mar. 16th 1920.... With.... Employers Federation. Cornwall Railway CERTIFICATE OF £50 SHARE Printed on green paper, size 7" x 9", made out to John Nuttal of Pimlico. Signed by Secretary. Good impressed seal diameter 2", showing shield with besants, mining tools, Prince of Wales feathers. Three small stab holes top left, in blank area. 1846. £65.00
¶ The seal has the lettering 'Incorporated 1847'.
Feock and Stithians ASSIGNMENT of a tenement in Kellignothan in Feock, and a tenement called Carne in Stithians, William Hill of Falmouth to James Lenhathren. Two large vellum sheets, browned but completely legible, two wax seals. 1738. £16.00

Gwennap BELL MINE, MERCHANTS LEDGER NO. 1 Ledger, sm. folio, half reversed calf, titled as above on morocco lettering piece. 118 pages of entries, plus many blanks at end, alphabetical Index. The first 60 pages are double page spreads with Debit on left, Credit on Right, later pages have both on same page. Includes payments made for cartridges, candles, different types of timber, tools, rope, fuse, stationery, drawing materials, printing, long lists of equipment bought from Harvey & Co. ('Arm for flywheel... £1.11s.8d', 'Tooth wheel for driving stamps... £5.14s.6d'). Firms include John Martyn & Son, East Basset Adventurers, Cornwall Blasting Powder Co., Cornwall Gunpowder Co. The latter part of the ledger has pages headed with the names of a large number of mines, with entries for explosives supplied (territe, detonators). Mines include: West Godolphin, Mounts Bay Consols, Pheonix Mines, New Great Work, Breage TIn Mine, Dolcoath, East Tregembo, New Trumpet, Kit Hill Tunnel Mine. 1871 - 1887. £280.00

Markets in Helston and Breage COPY OF CASE for Mr Burrough's opinion as to the right of holding a Market in Breage. Manuscript in a neat hand, 4 pages, small folio. 1814, this copy c1820. £35.00
¶ The writer says of Breage 'within a Short Distance of the village... is a mine called Wheal Veor, in which upwards of 400 persons are daily employed, who till within these few weeks must have applied to the Helston Market that being their nearest...' The writer quotes an anonymous Notice issued advertising the Market in Breage on Saturdays (miners' pay day) 'no doubt set afoot by some of the principal Agents in the Mines who have sufficient influence over the Tinners to command their attendance at whatever Market they may think proper' A person was sent by a Committee of Helston tradespeople to spy out Breage Market and saw 'Butchers Gardeners Bakers and a shoemaker'.

The first part comprises 40 pages of entries 1773-1776, entries filling up the whole page in most cases, in a small hand, one page of entries in 1776 being in a different, larger hand. This section contains entries recording sale of a wide range of fabrics and haberdashery items, including expensive silk, etc. Customers include Robert Hallett, Hannah Orchard, Richard Broderibb, Thos. Napper, Thos. Hine Jnr., John Barton of Clothier of Beaminster, Benjamin Bowring of Porton, (a few noted as 'insolvent', 'this debt is John Tuck's who is gone to Newfoundland', 'The representatives of this man live in Virginia'). Herkomer's Art School, Bushey PHOTOGRAPH of a large group of young men and women stading in front of what appears to be a wall of the castle at Bushey. Pencil note on the back 'Students at Herkomer's School, Bushey, Herts.' Size 9" x 11", on thick card mount. Photograph slightly faded, mount scuffed. c1900, or slightly earlier. £20.00
¶ The school was founded in 1883, and lasted for 21 years. The castle was demolished.

Eden (William), Baron Auckland Statesman LETTER addressed to James Lambeth, Bedford Row, dated Eden Farm, Nov. 29, 1811, stating that he has agreed with Mr Dunn for the purchase of Mr. Boone's interest in a 'seat call'd Freelands near Bromley. My sister Mrs Moore is the purchaser' 4p, 4to, address panel with wax seal and fine postmark 'Two Py Post Unpaid Beckenham', and red oval postmark. The price was the large sum of 4000 guineas for the house and land and 1750 guineas for the furniture and other property, excluding livestock, plate, china and books. 1811. £30.00
¶ At the time of this letter Eden had retired from politics and diplomacy and was living quietly near Beckenham, but was apparently still an influence on Pitt, whose estate at Hayes was nearby.

Comprises notes on his life (a sort of 'curriculum vitae', 1826-69, of his education, army service etc., copies of references), genealogical notes, including family trees, copies of inscriptions of in Churchill Church relating to his family (including his grandmother Perry who was Samuel Seyer's daughter, his Latch ancestors), record of his weight 1834-54, at different places, copy of a report done by Simmons on a Roman Road across Colerne Down, extracts from works of a philosophical or religious nature, records of sundial inscriptions, notes on folklore, list of dialect words, quotations in Greek, Latin, Hebrew, French, extracts from Churchill, Dalton, and Holme Church accounts, a few newspaper cuttings, some rubbings from memorial inscriptions loosely inserted. There is a six-page index of subjects. Paper watermarked 1835. Entries made over a period of time, up to 1870's. £150.00
¶ The writer began as a soldier, and was a Major of Brigade in 1842, apparently fighting in South Africa. A copy of a letter from his commanding officer in a campaign of 1835 mentions 'your judicious and amirable management of a mixed garrison of Europeans and Hottentots who were in daily contact with the aborigines... J. Machan, Major, 72nd Regiment'. He later went into the Church, and seems to have been a Rector in the Yatton area.

SEVENTEENTH CENTURY MASONIC RECORDS Mary's Chapel Lodge, Edinburgh EIGHTEEN WARRANTS to the Boxmaster of Mary's Chapel to pay out sums for those in need. 1677-90. Manuscripts on paper slips, size varying from 3" x 8" to 4" x 8". Edinburgh or 'Marrie Chappell' and the date at the head of each manuscript, with instructions to the Boxmaster to pay a sum to a particular person, signed by the Clerk. Each slip has been folded and a brief docket title written on verso. 1677-1690. £380.00
¶ Mary's Chapel was the first Lodge in Scotland. The form of wording is slightly different in each document. One reads 'Marrie Chappell the 4th November 1676. The which day the Deacones masters and brethren ordained Georg Porteous box master to give to Cathrin Glassford four pounds Scotts of present suplie whereupon this shall be his warrant. Extracted by me John Hamilton, Clerk'. Another woman recipient is described as 'in the tolboth of Edinr.', while James Marre is to have half a dollar 'being come from Irland(?) in grett distresse & being recommnended be the Conveiner to the whole deacons'. The recipients are sometimes referred to as 'mason', or 'wright', or, in the case of widows, the 'relict' of a mason.

Asks him to convey his thanks to the Committee 'for the honour they have done me'. ¶ John Jones, of Little Mild St., Lincoln's Inn, is described as a compositor. For the sum of five guineas, Virtue was to have the right to publish an 8vo edition, whereas the Jones' reserved the right to publish a duodecimo edition.

Dadian de Mingrelia (1850-1910) was a Georgian Prince famous as a chess player, and patron of the game.
Radcliffe family, Warwickshire and Devon DIARIES AND SCRAPBOOK Scrapbook containing printed ephemera etc. relating to school, presumably kept by son of General Radcliffe. 29p, 4to, marbled boards, with some dampstaining down inside edge of pages, not affecting ephemera. Includes letter to General Radcliffe signed 'Leigh' from Stoneleigh Abbey, tickets and programmes for concerts, school sports, etc., including 'Leamington College Cricket Club 1886. List of Matches' (card, 4p); 'Rules of the Milverton Cricket Club. List of Matches', 4to poster for sports, folded to fit... Lett's diaries for 1899, 1902, 1901. About six lines of entries for each day, in a difficult hand, with many references to feeling ill. Diaries have 'G. Radcliffe' on flyleaf. The family appears to have been in Devon at this time... with Smith's Diary 1879, no name but possibly the same diarist when younger, judging from the handwriting. Entries indicate he was in London, and give social engagements 'Dine Lord Lawrence', 'Lady Veux's At Home 4.30-6.30', 'called on Lady Lawrence, Lady Hampton, Lady Rieve, Sir F. The diary ends in May when 'household left London', 'I left 44'... with Diary... for 1906, in a different, clear, hand, name 'Captain N.R. Radcliffe, Alphington, Exeter' on flyleaf. Suffolk and Cambridgeshire FARMER'S LABOUR ACCOUNT BOOK 54 double-page spreads of detailed entries in 'Jarrolds' Farmer's Labour Account Book', small folio, marbled boards, recent cloth spine. Columns printed for Workmen's names, Days of the week, Weekly Settlements, and Cash Account. At the back are 4pp. of advertisements on orange paper, with fine wood engraving of traction engine, marquee, etc. Work includes ploughing, ditching, sifting chaff, thatching, killing pigs, clearing moat, ringing pigs, etc. Oct. 1880 - April 1882. £60.00
¶ Many workmen named. The commencing date and 'Kirtling' on label. The payments for the harvest are acknowledged with marks by the temporary labourers. Journeys to Dullingham and Newmarket are recorded.

Ten Kate (Herman Carel), Dutch artist LETTER in French dated Amsterdam 13th August 1856, to 'Mon. P.A. D'Hondt secretaire de l'exposition de Gand' (Ghent) saying that while he would like to see him have the painting 'Rembrandt' he couldn't let it go for 800 francs, 'je ne pourrai vous le laisser moins que douze cent francs', and that a merchant in Amsterdam has offered him more. 23 lines on 2p 8vo, blank conjoint leaf. Impressed monogram... together with... Letter from F. Bossuet, Brussels, 2 August 1853, saying he is sending two pictures, one of Cordoba, one of Toledo, with small sketch showing the light source in the first painting, a letter from J. Eeckhout saying he is sending 'Sir Henry Lee et sa fille, Woodstock', 30 May 1856, a similar letter from F. Schaygeny(?) to the Secretary, 1st August 1853, saying he has sent by rail a small picture for the exhibition, value 700 francs, plus 7 other similar letters from artists, all in French. 1853-56. £45.00
¶ Herman Carel ten Kate (1822-1891) apparently painted genre scenes. The exhibition was put on by the Royal Society for the encouragement of Fine Arts at Ghent.
