  1. Acland (James), Proprietor & Editor THE BRISTOLIAN Correspondence and Memoirs of James Acland... written by Himself. Vol. IV nos XXXIII. 4pp., 4to. Note in ink that it was purchased by Edward Tew at the printing office, Bridewell Lane. March 2, 1831. £10.00
    Includes articles on the Select Vestry Question, the opponents of Reform etc. Acland was often being pursued by the law 'On Saturday Night last I was besieged by Officers and others in one of my occasional castles....'

  3. Baptist Mills BILL - Thomas's Account of Wages &c paid... Account of the B.M. Compt. from Sept. 29th to October 13th 1711. Manuscript listing 15 items, one side of sheet 12" x 8", with totals for 'Trade' and 'Waggons'. Piece torn from top left corner with loss of a couple of words. Impressed ownership stamp. 1711. £95.00
    Includes 'To the Melters at Baptist Mills... £31.2.0d', 'To the Mill men & Soderers £16.6.6d', 'The Smiths & Labourers £8.4.0d', 'Keinsham Mills ... to the Millmen... £43.13s...' Material relating to the Baptist Mills works is very scarce. The works were started in 1702 by Abraham Darby. An Arthur Thomas, Pewterer, was one of the original group of Quakers who started the works, and a John Thomas was assistant to Abraham Darby, so the 'Thomas' might possibly refer to either of those men. The christian name of Mr. Thomas has been torn away.

Bristol Blitz BRISTOL ALERT Scrap-book containing the script of 'Bristol at War' broadcast on the West of England Home Service, 29th July, 1945. 20p., cyclostyled, foolscap, with 43 pages of cuttings of the Western Daily Press column 'Bristol Alert', and 29 black and white photographs (size approx. 4" x 6") of Bristol after the bombings of 1940 and 1941, loosely tipped into foolscap pages, captioned underneath by compiler, with some notes. Photographs stamped in purple on verso 'This photograph by Western Daily Press and Bristol Mirror Bristol' in an oval. Together with various relevant cuttings. All sheets loose in card covers. 1940's onwards. £120.00

Fishponds RIDGEWAY PARK CEMETERY Fine lithograph, size 16" x 21", plus wide margins, tinted in buff and greenish grey, showing a view across the cemetery towards Purdown, with chapel on the right and carriages approaching, each monument shown, people strolling along paths. Stoke Park on the hill in the distance, and Frenchay church in middle distance, picture nicely framed with trees. Large title, price of graves, and name and address of Registrar in bottom margin. c1870. £55.00

  9. Kingswood SIX REAL PHOTO POSTCARDS All titled in white in the plate and numbered A7444 etc. Includes Cossham Hospital, Clock Tower, Regent St., Park, Church interior. c1920 or slightly earlier. £16.00

  12. Lysaght (John), Limited. AGRICULTURAL FEEDING APPLIANCES Manufactured by John Lysaght, Limited, Galvanized Iron Works, Bristol. Catalogue printed in blue on buff paper, on both sides of sheet 16" x 12", folded to form a brochure 5" x 3". Each item attractively illustrated, with prices for different sizes. 1" tear along one fold. c1900. £26.00

  14. Theatre Royal BRISTOL THEATRE. ABSTRACT OF THE REGULATIONS OF THE TRUST DEED. 2p., 4to, stab hole in top margin. Folds, some repaired splits at folds. Reinforced at left-hand edge. c1816. £20.00
    Sets out the way the Theatre was to be managed in great detail, for example that the 48 Shareholders were to have Free Admittance.


  15. Theatre Royal, King Street PROGRAMME for Sinbad the Sailor. Very fine lithographed illustration of an eagle carrying a lady dressed as Sinbad in its claws, gold border, programme of Scenes etc. inside and on last page, with some local adverts... together with 8vo programme for Robinson Crusoe, decorative front and back printed in red and black, some slight browning on inside. c1900. £14.00
    A scene in 'Sinbad' was set in the port of Bristol.

Size approx. 6" x 8", shows sailing boat moored at the bank, near pinkish coloured houses surrounded by trees, two fishermen in foreground. In sepia tones with pencil shading and detail, sky left blank. 1811. £24.00

  25. Balleswidden Mine, St. Just REPORT on the Mine prepared for William Richards, on behalf of the Trustees of the late R. Davy. 3p., in manuscript, folio. Not signed. Possibly a contemporary copy. Divided into 'Present operations', 'The past year's workings', 'Future Prospects', Tin Dressing'... together with... Letter dated Balleswidden 11th Dec. 1869 from Henry Thomas to Captn. Henry Boyns, giving figures for Tin samples, number on tutwork, tin dressing cost etc. 2p, small 8vo. 13th Dec. 1869. £40.00
    'The average number of men per month on Tut has been 71 men & 13 boys, on Tribute 147 men and 19 boys. The value of mineral raised by each Tut & Tribute man and two boys equal to one man per month throughout the year is £6.9.1d.'

  26. Blight (J.T) PARC-AN-CHAPEL, CAPE CORNWALL. Manuscript, signed, by Blight. With an India paper proof of a wood-engraving of the ruins of the chapel, 3" x 4", pasted under the signature. 4to, 2p, headed 'For Publication', the paper has been folded and is rather creased down one side. Loosely inserted in plain wrappers, with a cutting from an early bookseller's catalogue describing the item, and a MS note of an ancient cross found nearby, taken from Buller's 'Account of the Parish of St. Just'. c1856. £200.00
    The wood-engraved illustration, of which this is a proof copy, appears in Blight's Ancient Crosses and other Antiquities....nThis manuscript was printed in 'Willis's Current Notes,' 1856.


  27. Bodmin, Falmouth, Penzance THREE ORDNANCE SURVEY MAPS Sheets XXX, XXXI, XXXII. Scale 1" to 1 mile, on thick paper, engraved surface approx. 23" x 33, plu wide margins. Folded to 13" x 5". As follows: (i) Sheet XXX. Corresponds to Margary State 3). Slightly dusty, with some pinholes in margins, and one small pin-hole in printed area, 2" tear in top margin at fold. (ii) Sheet XXXI. Two or three minor edge tears, two very small tears and some slight rubbing at one point in sea area at central fold. Paper water-marked 1801. Corresponds to Margary State 3. (iii) Sheet XXXII. Watermarked 'Smith' abd 1801. Corresponds to Margary State 3. Tear along platemark top left, 10" long, repaired on verso. (This sheet covers the tip of the Lizard only.) Published 5th Jany. 1813 by Lt. Col. Mudge, Tower. £120.00
    'the imprint date on the Cornish sheets, 5th January 1813, becomes a purely notional one, which may offer a clue to the relative rarity today of early impressions of the sheets' (Harry Margary)


  28. Camelford, Altarnum & Launceston Railway NOTICE to Owners, Lessees and Occupiers. Printed letter to owner of land required by railway, with manuscript Schedule listing 25 fields, house, etc. owned by Caroline Pearse in Lanteglos. 3p. folio, folded with docket title. 1874. £16.00

  29. Drunkenness SIX CONVICTIONS FOR DRUNKENNESS Helston, 1812-1820. Each 1p, small folio, in manuscript, with small papered wax seal, signed by Justice, setting out conviction and fine. Folded with docket title on verso. 6 items. 1812-20. £40.00
    Those convicted were: James Williams, Baker; James Nicholls, Labourer; Thomas Daniell, John Perry of Sithney, William Landenyon, Butcher; Edward Bolitho of Wendron.


  30. Fowey AN ACT to permit the Sale of the Danish Prize Ship Constantia Maria, and her Cargo, in the Port of Fowey.... 3pp, disbound, Act of Parliament. 1808. £15.00

  31. Germoe SETT in Boscreege in Trewithen, His Grace the Duke of Leeds to Richard Tyacke, Miner. Two large vellum sheets, signed by Leeds with wax seal. Grants right to mine and denotes limits 'as far west south and east as to join Wheal Sydney Sett... as far north as the Cross Lode on which the deep adit was driven from the Great work into Wheal Sydney Mine and on the other part as far northward as to join Wheal Reeth Sett....' Grubby on the outside. 1805. £55.00

  32. Grade CONVEYANCE of part of lands and house beside the road leading from Polstrangey to Kugar, and fields in Kugar called Voas an nell, with the liberty to take sand and seaweed from Poltesco Cove, J. Stephens to J. Jenkin. Large vellum sheet, wax seals. On verso is small genealogical 'diagram' referred to in text. 1876. £15.00

  33. Gundry & Co. TWO BILLS The Adventurers in Wheal Breage to Gundry & Co. Ropery, for rope, yarn, etc., 1810-11, and Wheal Godolphin Adventurers, Oct. 1813-Jan. 1814. Small 8vo. Together with small bill for 'Wm. Hill chd. to Wheal Treasury', 1799, and receipt for £24 received from Cap. Thos. Cornish for cash received by him 'from Baldues Adventurers for 1/3 of the dues of Black Jack to end of May last', Jan. 3, 1814. 1810-14. £18.00

  34. Helston in Kirrier, Manor of BOND of John Bolitho the elder of Wendron, yeoman, and his son to Thomas Hearle of Penryn, Merchant. Large folio sheet, signed with two wax seals, 3 witnesses, folded, some slight browning of paper on bottom half of sheet, and a few small holes at folds, with loss of a few letters, paper near wax seals rather fragile. 26 lines, plus 10 lines of preamble in Latin. 1700. £35.00
    Refers to a tenement in Wendron surrendered to Michael Gwyn at the Manor Court of Helston, held as security. The King was Lord of the Manor.


  35. Kea A SURVEY now held by order of John Hill for setting a lease of his dwelling house and Stitches of land thereto belonging near Bossow Bridge in the parish of Kea.... 14th May 1761. Manuscript recording the bidding between Elizabeth Stevens, Martin Cornish, Abednigo Sarah, with signature of William Pearce the best bidder, agreeing to take the lands. 1p, small folio... together with... Draft of Bill in Equity, Pearce and Williams, 1st Nov. 1762. 3p, small folio. 1761-2. £22.00
    The taker had to 'send a man yearly to repair and cleanse the leate...'


  36. Launceston REPORT ON THE BOROUGH OF LAUNCESTON 1pp., with map, zincographed from the Ordnance Survey, coloured in outline. Scale 1" to 1 mile. Approved by Henry James. Folio, disbound. 1868. £20.00

  37. Lostwithiel ST AUSTELL LISKEARD ROAD A390 Cornwall County Council. E. Collcutt, County Surveyor. Map so titled, printed on linen, size 27" x 59", scale 1/2500. Shows Lostwithiel and surrounding fields, road shown in red making 'U' bend across river and railway from North Street to Burn's Cottage. Folds. Three (burn?) holes in blank area. n.d. 1950's? £22.00

  38. Ludgvan ADMINISTRATION CERTIFICATE appointing Catherine Roberts administratrix of the estate of William Roberts of Ludgvan, Archdeaconry of Cornwall. Printed with ms. inserts, vellum, 7" x 8", signed by Deputy Registrar. 1774. £12.00

  39. North Cornwall Railway REPORT AND STATEMENT OF ACCOUNTS 31st August 1887. 4pp., folio. 1887. £16.00
    'The passenger traffic naturally shows a decrease, but there is a marked improvement in the goods and mineral traffic...'


  40. Penryn LETTER from Joanna Pellowe to her sister, dated Penryn Sept. 1st, 1789. 2p, size 13" x 8", the integral address panel on the second leaf has been torn out, leaving just the Penryn postmark and the remains of a wax seal, not affecting the letter itself. Two small splits at folds... together with.... the first two pages only of a letter from the same correspondent to her sister, Oct. 22nd, 1790, mentioning Richard and his chances of promotion, the feast for Mayor and Portrieve and the strangeness of the times 'never was greater preparations yet the knowing ones say it will not be a war...', plus a defective letter to the same sister speaking of election scandals and fashion. 1789. £40.00
    'Sincerely do I rejoice at my dear sisters safe delivery - if the Babe is continued to you God be praised'. She speaks about ships that have sailed 'Richard Pellowe sailed Last Saturday was a week for the Islands - he is gone out Capn...' Gives news of electioneering: 'There's Canvass today for the County, Messrs. Rodd, Tremayne &c for Sir William Lemon & Mr Gregor Son of Old Justice Gregor for his Cousin Sir John... Each party are determined to put out Sir Wm. Molesworth...' The sister was called Mrs Phillips.


  41. Penzance LEASE FOR A YEAR of two houses in New Street occupied by Mary Bennalls and John Boase, Richard Pearce of St. Levan, Clerk, to Peter Bown of Falmouth. Vellum, 18" x 11", wax seal. Some yellow spots. 1757. £22.00

  42. Pool COUNTERPART LEASE of a plot of land at Poole in Illogan known as Penhellick Vean, an 'old and decayed dwelling house', William Praed of Trevethow to William Willoughby. Vellum, 22" x 30", small plan coloured in outline in margin, size 7" x 2". 1853. £15.00
    Lists 3 'lives'.


  43. Recorder of Helston DRAFT ORDER to Aldermen to meet to elect a Recorder in the place of Francis Lord Godolphin deceased. Manuscript, 1p, 4to. Written with blanks for name, place, day. 1785. £10.00

  44. Redruth CONVEYANCE of 5 messuages on the eastern side of Green Lane in Redruth, Charles Glynn Prideaux Brune of Prideaux Place and others to Phillip Williams. 4 large vellum sheets, 4 wax seals, brief schedule of deeds. Coloured manuscript plan size 8" x 9" on verso of second sheet. 1862. £18.00

  45. Redruth LEASE of three dwelling houses and carpenter's workshop in Green Lane in Redruth, leading to Plaingwarry, all such parts of the common as shall hereinafter be enclosed by... George Crocker Fox, excepting free warren for hunting, fishing and fowling, Robert Were Fox of Falmouth, George Crocker Fox of Exeter and others, executors of the late David Hawse, to Phillip Williams of Redruth, Carpenter.     On their arrival for the funeral of his mother Gurney had 'locked up my wife... and the Undertaker with the Corps, and with the most blasphemous expressions swore that he would not let them out, or suffer the Corps to be interred until I or Mary had engaged to pay him £200 for the Lodgement of the Body of his Mother.' He suspected Thomas Gurney, curate of St. Allen, was behind it.

    The letter is a long and detailed argument against the imposition of a fixed scale of duty on imported corn, in place of a sliding scale. ' The writer had apparently given evidence before a Commons Select Committee on Agriculture in 1833. He also mentions that he himself had 'sold beef at Manchester, at fourteen pence per lb. to common Weavers, in the year 1815'.

  183. London and Newcastle FIVE LETTERS From George Gilroy at Bow to his father John Gilroy of Newcastle (millwright), dated London, 29 March 1841 - 28 July, 1843. Each letter approx. two pages, in a neat hand, with integral address panel on conjoint leaf, with postmarks and wax seals. 1841-3. £85.00
    He complains of the difficult conditions 'trade is very slack here now... I drew my money out of the Savings Bank thinking these rumours of wars would depress the funds.... would you advise me to speculate in a railway share for I have got about £85 and I should like to make it work as well as me....' Later letters mention his buying a Great North of England Railway share for £13.00, enquiring whether the 'Edinburgh Railway is to come by the East coast or West....'. In August 1841 he joins a drawing school '2 guineas a quarter', but in May 1842 is still out of work 'I have had only 5 days work in the last 15 weeks and no prospect of anything doing....' Later he considers going to India as an engineer in the East India Co., quoting the rates of pay, etc.... 'I find the Sierra Lione man has 3 guineas per week... so you see father I have asked less than the 3d class engineers.... my friend advises me as trade is so dull to take a little less....'

  192. Monmouthshire Canal Navigation SHARE CERTIFICATE Ticket No. 90. Made out in the name of John Wedgwood of Cote House in the County of Gloucester. Finely printed on thick paper size 7" x 11", title in large Gothic lettering with red and yellow shield with angel's head above, garlands, hand-coloured, 15 lines printed in cursive lettering, with the names of places in larger capital letters, papered seal of Monmouthshire Canal Company affixed, with green silk ribbons. Signed by the Clerk. Traces of two vertical folds, some very small light greyish marks over a small area near right margin, small patch of thin paper on verso (may have been attached to a leaf of paper at one small point and then removed some time in the past.) 1799. £260.00
    The Monmouthshire Canal was completed and opened in 1796. A number of tramways connected it with the blast furnaces and coal mines, and brought much business to the town of Newport. John Wedgwood lived at Cote House in Westbury on Trym, near Bristol, and was related to Josiah Wedgwood one of the main promoters of the canal.

    Dallas was a writer mainly known for his connection with Byron and his work 'History of the Maroons'. He was given various letters by Byron and planned to publish them after the poet's death, but was prevented by an injunction. His work 'Recollections of the Life of Lord Byron...' came out in 1824.

    Gives proceedings in great detail, with all the bills and petitions presented, addresses to the Prince Regent, much on inclosure, canal and road-building, on the war etc., for example, from 27 April 'A Petition of several Inhabitants of the Town of Liverpool, was presented.... setting forth that the Petitioners have been credibly informed that the Right honourable George Rose did lately... compare the situation of the people of England and France to that of two men holding their heads in a vessel of water, and trying which can longest endure the pain of suffocation.... the above-mentioned comparison too aptly typifies the condition of the Petitioners, all whose means of livelihood are alarmingly curtailed by the events of the War, and many of whom are reduced to the extreme of want, it is by no means applicable to the Right honourable George Rose and others... who by the possession.... of sinecure places, are much at their ease in the midst of public calamity'.

Kent and Cornwall ACCOUNT OF EDWARD WHATMORE WITH WILLIAM HILL Letter to Hill from Whatmore, presumably an agent or solicitor, dated Salisbury 10th Jan. 1775, enclosing an account for his services December 1774, expressing condolences on the loss of his son, and enquiring about leases which should have been sent to Falmouth. 2p., folio, integral address panel with Salisbury straight-line postmark. Affixed with sealing-wax is an account for April 1775-March 1778, 12p, folio. 1774-78. £45.00
    Includes travelling expenses for trips to their lands in Sutton at Hone, Kent; drawing up leases ('a pair of Long Leases 4 Large Skins to Wm. Pope'), account of rent received from numerous tenants (presumably at Sutton), 'pd. Mr. Wm. Woodward on account for the Survey & Maping the Estates... £24.18.2d', bills paid for 'repairing the Pound', cutting wood etc.

  399. London Customs BEGGING LETTER from Thomas Petken, St. George's in the East, London to a Mr. Francis Cobb in Margate. Says he has heard of his benevolent works, explains he was dismissed from the Customs Service as an infamous person 'was permitted to raise a Banditti against me for suffering Goods to be Run from on Board the Deptford East India Ship whom I superintended....' 1p, 4to, integral address panel on verso with postmark, small hole where seal torn in blank area, water stain down left side. 10 July 1789. £18.00

  413. Westmacott (Richard) LETTER to an unknown correspondent, Mount St., 1st June, 1813, saying he is 'flattered by the dedication you propose me and the mode of arrangement', saying he has long admired his work, which is 'honourable to our country'. 1 page, 4to. 1813. £18.00
    Westmacott (1775-1856), sculptor. With Flaxman and Baily he sculpted and reliefs on Marble Arch, and created many statues, monuments and busts of eminent figures, such as Captain Cook in St. Pauls, the Duke of Bedford in Russell Square, etc.
