  21. Outwell ACCOUNT BOOK for rents of an estate at Outwell. Size approx. 9" x 4", 31p, plus blanks, ruled in red vertically throughout. Contemporary blind-stamped reversed calf with brass clasps. 13 pages of entries at the front, comprising timber accounts, e.g. 'Walnut Trees sold Matthews and Camm... £39.17.6d... Poplar at 7d per foot... ash and elm bodys at 12d per foot...'; bills received for repairs; rents received listed under tenants name, including John Johnson, Jane Towson, H. Lea, Thomas Green. At the other end of the book are 18p of accounts, many entries signed 'Sarah Wilkes', listing payments for land tax by tenants in Outwell, their names heading the page, and money for draining, for example, 'for 40 acres of Mrs Wilkes Lands in Upwell on the North Side of Pophams Eau.', 'a dyke greve rate for lands of Mrs Sarah Wilkes in Burbeach Field in Outwell in the Isle of Ely' etc. 1758-1779. £250.00
    On the front end paper she notes 'The following is the Copy of a proper receipt (drawn up for me by my dear Son Mr Hayley for me to transmit to Mr Dixon every time I Ballance accounts with him and two such receipts I have sent him since the Estates came into my possession... Sarah Wilkes'. Mr Dixon appears to have been the manager or steward of the estate (she notes sums received from Mr. Dixon 'when he was in town', and that he 'has 5 per for all timber fell'd'), and there is a label on the front board 'Drawer No. 1, Mr. Dixon'. The Wilkes Estate was in Outwell and Upwell. Mentions various There is a plan 'A Map of the Estate of Israel Wilkes Esq. situate in the parishes of Upwell, Outwell and Emneth in the Isle of Ely and County of Norfolk. 1760' in the Cambridgeshire Record Office. John Wilkes was the second son of Sarah and her husband Israel, Malt Distiller.

    A very detailed map showing the area from Birkenhead Pier to Flaybrick Hill, and Chatsworth Park to Seacombe. Names owners of some of the land, shows each house, or building, and each plot, parkland, trees, and names most of the roads.

James Jenkin Sinr. have 2 cows £0. 11s 0d, and have 4 bullick and have 4 aceres and half of Weat and 5 of Barly and 5 of oats and 4 of heay... £0. 10s 6d', 'Littel Nancekuke.   41. Lostwithiel BILL of William Norway to Lostwithiel Church Wardens, June 21st - Dec. 24th 1794. 1p., approx 10" x 4", listing mainly 'bottles of tint wine', commons deal, spars, port and sherry. Marked as settled with Mr Pomeroy, and signed by Norway. 1794. £8.00
    The regular order of bottles of red wine was presumably for communion wine.


  42. Manor of Liskeard AWARD OF THE COMMISSIONERS made under 'An Act to Confirm and Enfranchise the Estates of the Conventionary Tenants of the Ancient Accessionable Manors of the Duchy of Cornwall, and to quiet titles....' concerning the commutation of Fines, Fees, Heriots etc. Size 20" x 24", 'Manor of Liskeard. Duchy Award' written in ink on back wrap. 2pp. preamble explaining the Award, followed by 17 printed pages, printed on rectos only, printed in columns for Name of Proprietor or Claimant, Description of Tenement, Particulars of the Lands (Field names etc. with measure), Annual Payments, Casual Payments, Sum of Heriot etc., Total, Arrears. In plain paper wraps, cloth spine, name 'Robert Coad, Liskeard' in ink on top wrap. Loosely folded down centre (but not creased). May 1845 £95.00
    Tenements include Trevelmond, Landazard, Caduskett, Boduel, Penhale, Tempellow, Double Boies Mill, Tremabe, Liskeard Workhouse, Troy's Pitt, Lady Parks. The last page lists the Demesne Lands of the Duke of Cornwall. The preamble refers to a separate map which was made.


  43.   48. Queen Anne's Bounty CERTIFICATE from the Governors of Queen Anne's Bounty charging the Vicarage of St. Wendron to repay the £195 advanced for 5 years in 5 instalments. Sm. folio, printed with ms inserts, fine papered seal of the Governors, 4" deep. 1926. £15.00

  49. Rogers (Wm.), Mawnan NOTEBOOK 8vo notebook, full blindstamped black morocco, 33 pages of notes, plus many blanks. Includes nursery rhymes translated into Latin ('Quod fecerit Jahannes Horner' etc.), various interesting epitaphs from Cornish churchyards, notes of amusing 'appropriate names' (e.g. W.H.N. Mallet, Auctioneer, Wadebridge), methods of packing grapes. Later newspaper cuttings about Wadebridge murder, Devon place-names, loosely inserted. c1870. £26.00

    The map is rarely found in this state, complete with Index map and text.
    It shows 656 gentleman's seats, represented by elevations of the building, as well as mines, salt works, quarries, lime kilns. Donn also developed a new way of showing roads according to their quality and whether they were fenced or not.
    "In 1759 The Royal Society of Arts.... offered an annual award of £100 for the best original 1 inch to 1 mile county survey. .....Donn was the first successful applicant.... Donn is the first to identify the island in Bigbury Bay by the names Bur Island or Borough Island", see Batten and Bennett's 'Printed Maps of Devon'.

  101. Free Franks COLLECTION OF EIGHT LETTERS three of which are marked on the address panel 'H.Free Curzon', from J. Moore to his brother Thomas Stevens at Winscott, (6 letters), and to his mother Mrs Moore at Torrington (2 letters). Each letter approx 3 pages, small 4to, in a small neat hand, two are cross-written. Wax seals on verso. One letter is written from Paris shortly before departure to England. Moore appears to have been a tutor to the son of Lord Curzon, Penn, and at the time the letters were written, was about to give up this role as the young man was nearly 21, and take up a living in Langtree, Devon, under the patronage of Lord Rolle. He speaks of Lord Curzon's and his son's gratitude for his services, 'he tells everyone that all the good he possesses he owes to me', and says that Lord Rolle 'has writen a kind letter saying he wishes he had the opportunity of removing me to a better living'. He writes to his brother and mother of his forthcoming marriage, and things he needs to set up house, such as knives and forks, linen, etc., (my income will be about 950 pounds') buying a second-hand carriage for the journey to the West Country, a grand piano for £100, finding a servant for his wife 'but not a fine lady's maid'... together with... A short note signed 'Bromley', Hagley, Nov. 5th, 1817, presumably to Moore, thanking him for the 'excellent work you have turned out of your hands in the Person of our Nephew, for whose improvement, in every way, we are indebted to your incessant care...' , and inviting him to Hagley (from where some of Moore's letters are addressed).     Mentions two 'lives', the sons of John Smale. The lease stipulates that the land should be treated with lime, 'three hundred horse loads of Good Dung', or with 'good Salt Water Sand', specifying amounts per acre.


  103. Frithelstock RELEASE of Christopher Hockin, Woolcomber, of the Equity of Redemption for Hollamore in Frithelstock, to Henry Stevens. Vellum, size 15" x 22", good armorial wax seal. 1730. £25.00
    Hockin had mortgaged half of Hollamore to James Awse, and later this mortgaged half was sold to Henry Stevens. At this date Hockin was indebted to Henry to the sum of £130 and to absolve this debt gives the moiety of Hollamore to Henry and his heirs forever.

  131. Plymstock PLAN OF THE MANOR OF PLYMSTOCK in the County of Devon. Manuscript map in ink on cartridge paper, dissected and linen-backed, folding into small 4to cloth endpapers. Size 24" x 35", scale 5 chains to an inch. Large title, fine compass rose, scale bar. Shows roads, buildings (in solid black), each building with its garden plot numbered, fields, each with a small neat ink number. Some areas shaded with wash colour, certain areas marked 'Fee Farm' in 'Gothic' lettering. A few fields labelled with the name of the tenement, e.g. 'Lang's Tenement', 'Meadey Tenement'. There is a list bottom right of seven 'Fee Farms' (including Pomphlet Mills), with acreage. The plan has obviously been used over a long period of time - the original very small neat black numbering of the fields etc., has been added to with different red ink numbers, and in a still later hand, with acreages. There are some later prices added in pencil, presumably referring to rents. The land is bounded by the land of Earl Morley, north of Pomphlet Creek. The 'new road to Modbury' is marked with a dotted line. Names Cat-water, Radford Lake. A few small holes in linen at folds. Paper watermarked 'J. Watman 1829'. £140.00
    Shows a very large number of plots. The plan was presumably prepared for the Bedford Estate.

'The Co. would undertake to put up Calciners at their Works at Greenhill above Gunnislake and only burn in them mundic removed from Devon Consols so that we should be able to ascertain the amount of Arsenic made... they ask His Grace to provide and lay down a tramway on the site of the old Devon Consols Railway...' Gives tables of prices and dues for arsenic.     Saltron's wife before she re-married made over the title to her father Mr. Berry. In return for a payment the father in 1704 conveyed the title to Hugh Stevens, the second husband. This document poses questions as to the claims of the son of Mr. Berry.

  154. Tavistock DEVON WHEAL UNION COPPER MINE Collection of documents relating to the Mine over the period 1857-60. The Mine was in Mary Tavy Parish on the West bank of the Tavy, south of Wheal Friendship. It appears to have been badly mismanaged by the agent, Mr Dunn, and there were financial irregularities which led to a court case. The documents can be summarised as follows:- (i) Prospectus. Six Thousand Shares of One Pound Each. Includes 2 reports on the mine, lodes, shafts, its history and prospects. 2 sides of folio sheet with adjoining leaf. Some small tears. April 1857. (ii) 6 Monthy Cost Sheets, May - Oct. 1858. Printed with name of mine and columns for name of employee, employment, quantity, price, amount etc. Lists payments to timber merchants, ironmongers, smiths, chandlers, masons etc. 'James Ware... taking out Balance Bob Pit of the little Wheel... 6s 2d', as well as those to 12 miners. Details in MS on 2 sides of sheets 15" x 19", verso of 1 sheet dark with dust. Together with Summary of costs May 1857 - Oct. 1858, and a few small sheets noting "Expenditure extra to what is included in the Monthly Cost List", including "Large Water Wheel 40 x 11 purchased from Taylors Company Wheal Friendship" with technical details. (iii) Mine Cost Book Notice. Printed on blue 4to sheet with details in MS re. tranfer of 1000 shares in Devon Wheal Union to R. Smith Purser. Not signed. Feb. 1859. Together with printed notice to the Adventurers that a petition was filed in the Vice Wardens Court against the Principal Agent in Devon Wheal Union for £130.15s.2d. Sm. 4to sheet, details in MS. 15th Nov. 1858. (iv) Minutes and copies of minutes for 4 Shareholders Meetings, Jan. - Oct. 1859. With lists of shareholders, and printed notice of the meeting on 25th Oct. 1859, to "consider the propriety of selling or disposing of the Setts, Leases & other property of the Company", and list of liabilities. Minutes of the January meeting have copy of original deed of 1st Jan. 1858 granting the lessees 21 years' liberty to search for minerals. (v) Notebook with copies of correspondence between Mr Quick, one of the original lessees, and Mr Challinor, a shareholder, July 1857 - Dec. 1858. e.g. 30th July 1857 "5 or 6 good honest men would now realize a large fortune for it is one of the richest mines in England & I am informed it will be a second Devon Consols..." 62 pages in sm. 8vo notebook, full calf, badly damped, prelims and first page disintegrating. (vi) Original letters, together with some copy letters, between Mr Quick, mainly on paper headed "Town Hall Liverpool", and Mr Challinor, Pinnox Pottery, Tunstall. 1857-60. For example: Letter from Alred Quick to Edw. Challinor, 14th Nov. 1850:- 'this afternoon one of the Men came up to me... he took out of his pocket the larger of the stone I now send to you. We then went down and broke a Bucket full of... copper ore... It is a pretty lode & I have ood reaon to believe the Lode will improve.. the ground is fair for Driving... I will get a friend of mine a smelter to give his opinion upon the samples sent by Dunn...' Approx. 120 letters, plus rough notes by the solicitors in the case brought by Challinor against Quick and an 18 page folio "Case", which is very badly damped but legible. (vii) Report by Mr Bowers Nov. 17th 1858, of his visit to the Mine and interview with the Agent, with 2 very crude ink sketch maps of lodes and shaft, in ink. "2 o'clock went down the mine & examined the lode that Capt. Dunn had cut & we saw an immense quantity of water the face of the lode was before us running west it appeared about 3 to 4" vein & we brought a piece out of it but Mr Dunn sd. it was twice the thickness at the bottom of the level.... when we came up again & went in the office to dress there came an officer from the Court & served Mr Dunn with a summons from the Court of Stannaries of Devon." 1857-60. £360.00

  415. Tasmania PROSPECTUS for the Tasmania Crown Silver Mining Co. Ltd. 3pp., folio, explaining the potential of the mine, loosely inserted is a 4pp. report on the 'Silver Crown' by Thomas Butement, and a full page coloured plan showing course of lodes etc., scale 12 chains to 1 inch, and small location plan. 1890. £30.00
    The silver field was at Zeehan, on the west coast of Tasmania.

Folding fully hand-coloured map, dissected and mounted on linen, size approx. 53" x 41«", folds into original cloth slipcase, morocco label, rubbed at corners. Shows soundings in fathoms around the coast. Certain towns in the Midland counties marked with small red circle. 1845. £140.00

Lithographed plan with outline handcolouring, decorative title, scale 4 chains = 1 inch. Size 19" x 26". Plus similar plans for property in Westbury belonging to James Burgess, and in Frome Selwood: Philip Whitcomb, Charles & Martha Halls and Sarah Chinnocks, Marquis of Bath and Revd. Charles Phillot; Betty Olive; John Hassell; John Simkins; Henry Miller, and 1 other in Frome Selwood with top corner torn and name missing. Plus a larger plan showing river and plots, with no title.   420. Yeats (E.C) CUALA INDUSTRIES Miss E.C. Yeats hopes that you will come to St. John's House, St. Giles at any time between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Thursday May 20th, to see and (possibly, but not necessarily) to buy some of her Embroideries, Books and Prints. Printed on thick paper, folding to approx. 4«" x 3«", printed with a woodcut on the front, hand-coloured, showing a red tulip with a bird above it, silhouetted against a landscape of blueish hills, sky with large white clouds. Opens up to reveal the printed invitation inside. Large watermark showing an Irish round tower. c1920? £48.00
    Elizabeth Yeats was the poet W.B. Yeats' sister. She learnt embroidery with May Morris, and on returning to Ireland in 1902 set up the Dun Emer embroider workshop and printing press, which was later known as Cuala Industries, employing only women.
