    The estate had 'a long frontage to the River Thames'.


  3. Sunninghill COUNTERPART LEASE of Tetworth Hall in the parish of Sunninghill, Henry Foley to James Crauford, Captain in the Grenadier Guards. Two vellum sheets, size 22" x 26", wax seal. 1853. £18.00
    The lease stipulated that Crauford should 'trim the quick fences' once a year, keep the garden stocked with flowers and vegetables, etc.


  4. Thatcham RELEASE AND CONFIRMATION of a newly erected messuage near the road leading from Thatcham to Chamberhouse Mills, with land in the Common Mead called Wide Meade, seven acres called Fordlands, etc. Nicholas Marshall of Coldthropp, fisherman, to Elizabeth Hole alias Hoare of Thatcham, widow. Vellum, size 22" x 27", attractive large calligraphic initial letter, Signed by Marshall, lacks wax seal from tag. Witnessed on verso. Small tear in vellum at one fold due to weakness in vellum, without loss. 1682. £32.00

  9. Dolphin Society ANNUAL DINNER 13th November 1877 at the Victoria Rooms at 5 o'clock. Richard Bright Esq. M.P. President. Attractive invitation, made out in ink for The Rev. H. L. Thompson, on card size 4«" x 6", printed with wide border of flowers and leaves in brown, decorative blue lettering, and blue dolphin in a circle. 1877. £16.00

  10. Fry's WORKS MAGAZINE Bicentenary Number, 1728 to 1928. 86pp., 4to, attractive cover in blue black and red, with ships etc., photographic illustrations and line drawings... together with... COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL in heavy metal, diameter 2", with portrait of Joseph Fry on one side and a cocoa tree on the other, in original leather case, gilt at edges, velvet lined. 2 items. 1928. £38.00

  11. Scholastic Trading Co. STONE'S BUREAU CABINETS and Universal Portfolios. Illustrated price list, 16pp, printed in red, rusty staple. c1900. £10.00

  12. Sickness Club RECORD BOOK listing payment made to women for 'sickness' and 'old age', 1839-48. Cash book, 4to, full reversed calf, blind-stamped decoration, raised bands. The first section comprises 9 pages, one per year, each listing 23 women (only 2 with addresses) and columns to show payment made every month that year, the second part is a cash account, 37 double-page spreads with debit and credit, showing money received from members, sale of consols etc., and money paid out to named women for sickness, old age, and for funerals, and for collector's salary. Many blank pages. 1839-48. £60.00
    There is no clue as to the name of the society. The final note states 'Balance in hand on 16th Feb. 1848 when the Club was agreed to be dissolved. G.C.' It was no doubt a Bristol society as the addresses given are Brandon Street and Hotwell Road.


  13. St. Philip and St. Jacob LEASE of messuage on the Eastward side of John Street, and a Malt House in John Street, John Rogers of Bristol, Grocer, to William Kinston. Vellum, size 23" x 27", two wax seals, with monogram and very small date '1781'. 1784. £24.00
    Gives occupiers of adjacent buildings, and measurements of pieces of land. The land had originally belonged to Sir William Cann.

    Shows only a small strip of coast, from Hartland to Cambeak.


  21. Buller family GENEALOGICAL TREE OF THE 'BULLER FAMILY' the descendants of John Francis Buller of Morval and Shillingham in the County of Cornwall. This tree is prepared from a smaller tree of 1865 and from M.S.S. at the British Museum & Herald's College... and information obtained from members of the family Anno Domini 1896. Hand-coloured lithograph showing an actual tree with trunk and branches, the leaves coloured in blue, green, pink and yellow according to the four generations. Large shield of Armorial bearings of John Francis Buller bottom left, small pedigree bottom right showing the connection with Edward I. Size approx. 42" x 34", linen-backed and mounted on wooden roller, with wooden stretcher at top, green silk ribbon edging. 1896. £220.00
    Covers the period 1685-1880's.


  22. 'C.A.G.' FAREWELL TO ST. MICHAEL'S MOUNT Royal Baths, Penzance, June 14th, 1872. Poem in eight stanzas printed on one side of an 8vo sheet, with a heading in large type, black border similar to a mourning border. Pasted to a sheet of paper which has some newspaper cuttings on the back. Le Lievre, Printer. 1872. £25.00
    The writer bids farewell to the Mount, as he is going home to die, and will look on the scene no more: 'But "Never more" is plainly writ/Upon this Church, these rocks and towers/'Tis strangely sad these friends to quit/Companions of my quiet hours'. Le Lievre was a Guernsey printer, and the writer was presumably returning from Penzance to Guernsey. It could be that the 'G' of the initials points to a member of the Guille family.


  23. Constantine CASE with Mr. Ford's opinion. Constantine lands. Manuscript in two hands on single side of a small folio sheet. Sets out a Query in a matter of title to one of the Hill family's Manors, Peter Hill having died without issue. With a lawyer's answer in 11 lines, signed John Ford, Octr. 22. 1747. Mid. Temple: 'I am of the opinion that as Peter Hill is dead without Issue a Fine levied by William will make a good title...' Folded with docket title, some edge tears and small hole affecting a few letters. 22nd Oct. 1747. £10.00

Grade and Ruan Minor TITHE RENT CHARGE 1878-9. 6 double-page spreads, folio, entries in ink in printed columns for Tenements, Occupiers, Rent Charge in Apportionment, Receipts, Arrears, etc. Lacks wraps. Manuscript title for Ruan Minor Section, but not Grade Section. One double-page spread for 'Rents' at end. Page edges dusty. 1878-9. £36.00
    Tenements include Poltesco, Wellgooth, Liddy's Mill, Prazegooth, Ruan Vean, Bonadventure, Treverder Wollas, Plaingwarry, etc.

    Reserves to Ley the right to take away timber, tin, stone etc. Hopgood was to keep everything in good repair, manure the fields etc.


  28. Lanhydrock APPORTIONMENT OF THE RENT CHARGE IN LIEU OF TITHES in the Parish of Lanhydrock, in the County of Cornwall. 6pp., folio, thin card wraps, cloth spine. Printed in columns giving names of Landowners and Occupiers, no. on Plan, Description of premises and land, Cultivation, Quantity, Rent-charge. 1839. £45.00

  29. Lanivet ORDNANCE SURVEY MAP Sheet 34 S.W. Scale 6" to 1 mile, size 13" x 18", linen-backed and folding into 4to marbled endpapers. Small hole in linen where folds meet. Some slight browning at section edges. A few small very small figures in red at 5 points. Revised 1906. £8.00

  41. St. Minver LEASE of a newly-erected dwelling houses in the Church Town of St. Minver with the wastrel adjoining, William Sandys to Thomas Mably. On paper, 19" x 27", repaired tear 12" along one fold. Two wax seals. Unsigned, note on verso 'not executed' under heading 'Anthony's House'. 1794. £12.00

Stratton, Marhamchurch GRANT of lands and tenements in Estedownerewe (Downrow), Westdownerewe (Whitstone), Noriscombe and Tettiston in Hilton (in Marhamchurch), and in Stratton, John Edwards, Robert Frenche, parson of the Church of Thornbury (Devon, John Cleverdon and William Molton.     The properties were to go to the grantor's wife Joan on his death, and if there were no heirs, to John Speccote, knight. The attornies were John Huchin and John Glanfield.

  125. Lyme Regis LETTER from Charles Wanklyn, Lyme Regis, 27th Oct. 1935. To 'My dear Lang', congratulating him on his admirable preface, and pointing out two small errors, saying that Lankester will arrive soon and he would like him to see the preface. Says the fight with the Borough Council continues 'but I will not see the Museum wronged (underlined). As you know, for the greater part of my time I have been acting as sole Trustee. Is it conceivable that, twice since 1928 and acting by myself alone, I have compelled the Borough Council to eat its own resolutions... once in 1931 and the second in 1938.... to carry them through is a great strain on me... and all this time I work for them with all my heart, soul and strength...' 4p., 8vo, headed notepaper. 1935. £10.00

  126. Lyme Regis LETTER from Zachary Edwards to 'My dear Walter', dated Lyme Regis, 27th March 1893. 4p., small 8vo. Tear at fold in the two leaves. Says he has at last obtained 'the Mirror for the 18th Feb.' and finds the account of the seige of Lyme is taken out of Roberts' History verbatim 'The whole is the work of an ignorant copyist, either Turner himself or Baker the shoemaker.... I believe there are two copies in existence of the Diary of the siege - the original which formerly belonged to Lisle Ffollett, & which I presume to be now in Mary Tucker's possession & a Mss copy taken of it by Roberts with Ffollett's leave...' Says he would be tempted to rewrite Roberts if he could get hold of any additional information. 1893. £14.00
    Zachary Edwards was the author of Mate's Guide to Lyme Regis. He was mayor from 1887-90 and 1902-14. 'Walter' was probably Walter Wingate.


  127. Lyme Regis LETTER from R.W. Harrison to Henry Woodward, dated 17 Weech Road, N.W., Oct. 1. 01. 2p., small 8vo. Says he may remember his letter of August about the discovery of a complete Ichthyosaurus at Charmouth 'you then suggested my obtaining a photograph of the beast'. Says he is enclosing a photograph which would help him judge if it would be worth 'taking any steps to secure it or not...' (photograph not present). 1901. £20.00
    Henry Woodward wrote many articles on the geology of the area in the 1880's and 1890's.

Lister, Lyme Regis, saying he is enclosing a list of mosses collected in the neighbourhood, and that he is bringing (illegible but connected to 'Lr. Lias') for 'restoration by your special artist' and then hopes to give it to Lyme Museum. Says Dr. Wingrave may never be well again 'and what will happen to the Museum fossils?'; letter from Mr. Weld, Chideock, thanking him for a copy of his pamphlet; letter from E. Le Crozier Lancaster, saying he and Wanklyn are keen on the painting of the diorama 'which should be a great attraction & from which Wanklyn hopes to learn something about 'this damned Lias', and discusses how they should pay for it. Goes on to discuss the casts of the Harrison fossils and Harrison's books 'the fossils I will keep back until you can come and decide how they are to be exhibited'. Barton Regis, near Bristol CONVEYANCE of a piece of ground called the Lamb Ground, near Wade Street, part of which is to be laid out to a street, Nathaniel Wade of Bristol to George Strickland of Somerton, Carpenter. Vellum sheet, size 26" x 30", signed with his mark by Strickland, wax seal. Waterstains down 10" of two vertical folds, and part of central horizontal fold, with text in these areas faded and only just legible. 1712. £18.00
    Nathaniel Wade had been involved in Monmouth's Rebellion, but had turned King's Evidence. Apparently the bridge over the River Frome in Wade Street was known as 'Traitor's Bridge'. The land is described on the verso as 'ground without Lawford's Gate'.

Together with a small box containing a quantity of engraved bookplates of 'Agatha Royds Trevor' (her married name), with a crest and view of a house, a photograph of the house in the bookplate, a completed dance card 1884, a photo of her grave, carte de visite of her three sisters, and another photo, presumably of the same girls grown up. The diary were begun when she was a teenager, and the second one mentions her 18th birthday. 1881-1886. £140.00
    Agatha was the daughter of Edward Walter Greene, chairman of Greene King the brewers, owner of Nether Hall, Suffolk, and Conservative M.P. for Bury St. Edmunds. Records the usual round of balls, visits, calls, dinners, church services, skating, reading to the people at the almshouse, trips on her father's steam yacht, hunt meetings, tennis parties, etc. 'Thursday 4th August (1885) Very wet. Katie went into Worcester with me I have a violin lesson from Mr Elgar', mentions several times going into Worcester for 'fiddle lesson', and rehearsing music with 'the Berkeleys'. 'Nov. 2nd. We went to meet at Birdlip with Papa, and to lunch after... Nov. 3rd... going to hear Lord Randolph Churchill speak in Worcester tonight, he was there at lunch yesterday...', 'Papa went to political meeting at Stoulton last night - very rowdy'.' 'I went to hear the Elijah'. 'Christmas Day. I have 19 cards... gave servants books & stablemen socks.' The last volume describes a family trip on her father's boat the 'Giralda', to Amsterdam, Edinburgh, The Caledonia Canal, Dublin, Cornwall 'Got to Falmouth at 9.30. Very smelly town. Went to see Truro, St. Michael's Mount & Penzance. Had Mr. Davies Gilbert to dinner.' The only time her father's occupation is referred to is the opening entry 'Jan. 1st. 1881. Went over the new malting with Papa'. Apparently he left the management of the brewery to his cousin.

  398. 'F.G.J.' HOW DID WE ACT IN THAT CASE? Vide - Mr Gladstone's Speech at Edinburgh on the 17th March, 1880. Poem printed on one side of a sheet 16" x 11", in 48 stanzas, printed in two columns. Traces of having been pasted to album leaf down right hand edge. 1880. £25.00
    Gladstone toured various cities in Scotland in 1879-1880, making very long speeches, but attracting huge audiences (20,000 in Edinburgh). The poem refers to foreign affairs, implying that the Liberals bemoaned colonial wars but were happy to take the material gain: 'And when our turn comes we shall keep/What the Afghan war gives us to hold/Though every true Briton must weep/O'er the tale of a wicked war told. Rely that no Liberal yields/What the Tories have left them in hand/And spoils won on far distant fields/We shall use for the good of this land.'

  414. Maidenhead, London JOURNAL of a short tour from London to Maidenhead. Three and a half pages, 8vo, written on folded sheets, paper watermarked 1833. Recounts a trip by a student 'Went for my last time to the London U. where I was examined by Mr White in Limits Logarithms & solutions of triangles'. He travels to Maidenhead where he and a friend stay for several days next to The George. They visit Cookham 'where I drew a little in the Church yard crossed the ferry went through Lord Boston's Park..' He visits Hurley Place 'an old delapidated mansion - shortly to be pulled down. Main events seem to be his meals.... together with... A description 'Gloucester Cathedral', written on exactly the same size leaves, same watermark, in a similar, but more untidy hand. 10 pages of detailed and technical architectural description of the interior and exterior, for example 'I regard the Perpendicular of this Transept as very early, the windows retaining more marks of the Decorated the the other parts...', 'The windows pleased me remarkably and a plenteous use is made of the ball or nailhead in the moulding...' It may possibly have been written as some sort of task set to an architecture student. 2 items. 1830's. £34.00

Small piece torn away from two corners of top wrap, split in cloth at top of spine, first page dusty. Printed at the Photo-litho office of the Survey, Calcutta. 1931. £26.00

  434. United States of America LETTER signed 'CHV' from 172 State St., Albany, New York, June 29th, to a friend in Britain addressed as 'Dear Colonel'. 16p., 8vo, undated but paper water-marked 1900, describing his visit to New York, Albany, Boston, and Washington. Handwriting rather scrawly... together with a four-page letter in the same hand, also signed 'CHV', addressed from 'Applegarth, Maidencombe, Teignmouth, Nov. 30th' (1905), to 'My dear Young', about his recent serious illness. c1900. £24.00
    He stays at the Waldorf Astoria in New York, where he describes the menu as 'running to 150 different edibles... Americans seem to be very temperate as to wine etc... mostly taking iced water'. He is impressed by the 'electric hansoms'. At Washington he found the White House was about to be repaired, and feared he could not go inside, but 'my landlord came to my rescue getting me into the place, & even introducing me to the President Mr. Rooseveldt with whom I had the honour of shaking hands & exchanging a word. He is a very busy man & 20 or 30 people were waiting to see him at the time...'


  435. Webman (H.J). Song Publisher, New York THE GIPSY'S WARNING Song in 4 verses. Printed on one side of 8vo sheet, decorative border. New York. c1880. £6.00
    The song tells of how a gypsy warns a young girl to beware 'the dark-eyed stranger' who it transpires has previously betrayed the gipsy herself.

    COPPER MINING

  439. Williams family SEVEN LETTERS from John Michael Williams to his brother and uncle, 3 from London and one from Swansea. One dated 1858 says they have an order for copper, and that R. Michell is 'going on with Carne's Bank, his capital will be employed & we may get his Tin House...', another dated 1859 about lack of orders, imports from Chile 'only four vessels on the way to us... Mines in Chili nearly all stopped... this alone justifies our keeping up the price of Copper a little longer'. The letter from Swansea, 1860, says they should purchase little more ore 'I hope you will not purchase exceeding 250-300 Tons of ore on Thursday, say high produce and none but what contain much sulphur or arsenic and no grey ores - ask M. Andrews to be more particular in marking the Foreign Ores when they contain Black or Grey and part yellow...' all one page, sm. 8vo, except the last which is 2«p. May 1859 - August 1860. £40.00
